I'd like to relate to all you Vangelistas out there that I have worked for the NYC Dept of Sanitation for over 14 years now and I have NEVER seen a MacIntosh of any type placed out for trash collection. I have also asked the men who work for me to please recover and bring in any Mac they ever find out there. I have never had one brought in yet. One the other hand I have spotted many dozens of that other kind of computer in the trash piles. Apparantly even the trash pickers out here aren't interested in picking them up.

Date: Fri, 25 Sep 1998 08:07:02 -0800 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: $$ - Apollo 2.2
This special offer is from:
Jeremy Roussak, <JeremyR@dcs.qmw.ac.uk>
Apollo 2.2 has just been released and is now available from good ftp sites everywhere. Until October 15th, Evangelistas can register this wonderful launching utility for $24 instead of the usual $30. To register for this special price, DO NOT use either of the registration applications in the Apollo archive. Instead, go directly to
<http://order.kagi.com/?JR1>
Apollo is a launching utility. You configure a menu containing those applications, control panels, desk accessories, folders and documents you use frequently. Then, whatever you are doing, a click of the mouse pops up the menu and lets you open any of the configured items. You can organise items into groups, with each group having its own submenu. If a group is made "active", selecting its name makes Apollo open all the items in the group seriatim. Apollo can automatically control the sound level and screen depth for each application, changing them as you switch between applications. It also has facilities for switching between applications using the keyboard.
New features in version 2.2 include a contextual menu plugin for one-click configuration, integration with Default Folder (v2.9 or better required), much improved icon handling and the ability to position Apollo's icons anywhere in the menu bar simply by option-clicking and dragging. There is also much more native PowerMac code and a few bugs have been fixed.
Apollo 2.2 requires system 7 (it is fully compatible with system 8) and a Mac with a 68020 or better processor.
It seems that the PC industry has learned a lot from Microsoft. When a competitor has a hit product, in this case the iMac, preannounce a product that sounds just as good or better. In this case, they are announcing products that won't be released until 1999, and comparing the price to the iMac of today, yet fail to offer a complete list of features and software. Rumors have already been flying about other iMac models after Christmas that will have better price points. This is not surprising since the same components used in the current iMac will be cheaper in a few months, that is the trend in the industry. So comparing a machine of today to a machine of next year is far from a fair comparison. But then again, look who's doing the comparison.
If we look at what we know about these knockoffs, it is already apparent that CHEAP was the key word in their equation. They say that they will use the Celeron processor running at 300 to 333 MHz. According to Intel's own benchmarks <http://www.intel.com/procs/perf/icomp/index.htm>>, the Celeron is at least 15 to 30% slower than the same clockspeed Pentium II. That puts it, at best, in the range of 255 to 283 MHz Pentium II, which we know that the iMac is at least comparable. In addition, I have hear that they are going with a smaller 14-in. monitor, which I doubt will be comparable to the high-quality monitor in the iMac. I have always pushed consumers to choose the monitor carefully since they will have the most interaction with it, and it will have a dramatic effect of their comfort and satisfaction. However, the monitor is often the first place that consumers try to cut costs, and the Wintel vendors know this.
By the time this machine is available, there should be new models of the iMac available, probably at a variety of price points.
And just in case you didn't believe that the Mac is Back, just look at who everyone is trying to be like ;-)

Date: Fri, 25 Sep 1998 08:07:26 -0800 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: PR - YP Refraction 1.0 Released
Keyword: Market by market, Education
This announcement is from:
Yves Pelletier, <ch865@freenet.carleton.ca>
Yves Pelletier has released YP Refraction, a new tool to learn the laws governing the refraction of light (Snell's law).
YP Refraction simulates a laser source that you can move around a prism. Six different prisms are available: a simple frontier between two media, a semicircular prism, a square prism, a rectangular prism and two triangular prisms. The program let you modify the indices of refraction. The normal at each point of incidence, the angle of incidence, the angle of refraction, the indices of refraction and the direction of propagation are displayed. The obtained diagram may be printed, copied to the clipboard, or saved as a PICT file.
System Requirements: YP Refraction runs on any Macintosh computer with MAC OS 7.0 or later. It needs about 265 Kb on your hard disk and less than 1 Mb of RAM.
Pricing / Availability: YP Refraction 1.0 is available now, and an evaluation copy may be downloaded through our Web site at <http://www.kagi.com/pelletier/refraction.html>. The price for a single user license is $15 US.
About Yves Pelletier: Yves Pelletier <pelletier@kagi.com> is a full-time physics teacher and a part-time Mac OS programmer. To find more about his other educational shareware programs for the Mac OS, visit his web page at <http://www.kagi.com/pelletier>.
Ok, I admit it...I'm a major Drew Carey fan. I was one even BEFORE he came out as a major Apple fanatic in his book. So it was not suprising for me to see the iMac prominantly displayed on Mimi's Desk on the "Drew Carey Show" (uh, ABC on Wednesday night, 9 PM).
Oh, and I'm an even BIGGER Mimi fan. I know, she's this nice married woman who's actually fairly "normal", but I still wouldn't mind taking her to dinner the next time she's in northern California (hey, I'd be a perfect gentleman! She IS married, after all!). I'm sure she knows how to get in touch. ;-)
