A long time ago, I posted a query about the availability of a "Pigeon Breeding Software". I delayed this summary only because I thought we would get something customized to my friend's needs, but this is not happening finally, so I ought to wrap it up at last.
Here is a brief summary of the numerous answers I received :
- - "Reunion" by Leister (www.leisterpro.com) unanimously acclaimed for the "genealogy" aspect of the work.
- - Gene 4.2 for Mac <http://www.ics.uci.edu/~eppstein/gene/>, shareware, for the genealogy part as well.
- - GENOTYPE, for dog breeding and shows (Klaus Hornig <@> <Justy@compuserve.com> and/or <http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/justy/geno.htm>. Klaus says it is possible to modify the database for special purposes.
- - Dave Markant <equtec@frontiernet.net> says he has developed customized FileMakerPro-based management application for a Thoroughbred Horse Breeding Farms. Much of the application could be applicable to other needs and/or customized accordingly.
Unfortunately, I could not locate anything readily available for the money management aspect of that kind of business.
Other interesting leads/ideas/sources :
- - MacTreasures <http://www.mactreasures.com>>, although tried without success.
- - contacting the university biology-agronomy departments.
My apologies for the delay and for not quoting each individual, but thanks again to all collectively.

Becoming a programmer for Windows is like becoming a dentist for a Tyrannosaurus Rex
By: Wil Shipley, President, Omni Development, Inc. May 5, 1998
"Lots of small programmers have a vision that working with Microsoft is like being one of those little toothbrush birds for crocodiles -- sure, the crocodile is the one eating the zebras and gazelles, but there's plenty of crumbs left in the cracks between his teeth. The crocodiles don't hurt the birds, as they appreciate clean teeth, and the tiny birds can live very well off the morsels that the 20-foot crocodile deems not worth bothering with, so everybody wins.
"The problem with this analogy is toothbrush birds never grow up to be crocodiles -- they spend their whole lives just living off the gunk in crocodile's teeth. Most people don't set out to create a tiny company; they want to create the next killer app, and become, if not the next Microsoft, maybe the next Adobe, or the next MacroMedia. Nobody wants to stay a tiny bird forever, but that means giving up the gunk and going for the big game."

My sister works at People magazine as a writer, and I have helped her come up with many story ideas over the years. Being a Mac fan, I of course, have suggested a profile of Jobs and company. But to no avail. The magazine, my sister says, focuses on (no offense to Steve) the hot, the sexy, the good-looking. So I proposed a story on the iMac.
She didn't say no.
She said that if I could supply her with the names of some celebs who have purchased an iMac, she would pitch the story. I figure Apple masters such as Sinbad and Gregory Hines did, but I'm not sure. And wouldn't you think Jerry Seinfeld and Rosie O'Donnell would get one? To that end, do any of you 'listas know of any famous iMac users? If you are a famous user, you may contact me as well.
Please pass names on to me at <fonts@inav.net>, and I'll pass on to my sister. From there, typical protocol of working through managers and PR people will occur. So no celebs will be contacted by me or 'listas and no private information will be revealed.
I sure would love to see the iMac in People.

Well. It's here, and now I get to add myself to the list of columnists who have taken time to review the iMac. First off, the initial impression from the machine is terrific. That doesn't mean it doesn't have its glitches though, and some dandy surprises that happen to come along for the ride. So, let's roll the iMac, item by item, and see what we've got here after all the shouting is done. More...

This request is from:
Marcy Lombardi, <marcy@neo.lrun.com>
I am part of a Technology team in a large School District that is almost all Macs. We have purchased many G3 all in ones (all right!) and need to hook them up to the new T.V.'s now in the classrooms. This is fast and easy, but we've run into a glithch. Video Mirroring needs to be turned on for the connection to work, each time you restart the computer. The only way to turn it on is with the T.V. Mirroring control strip, but since we use AtEase on all of our machines, the teachers cannot get to it every morning. We've tried everything imaginable - even an Apple Script. Any suggestions?

Date: Tue, 29 Sep 1998 08:06:11 -0700 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: Tidbit - Intel CEO Loves His New iMac
TIME Magazine Online Andy Grove Loves His iMac Intel's chairman says he has seen the future of computing
"...What will the next generation of desktop computers look like? A lot like Apple's new iMac. 'The iMac embodies a lot of the things I'm talking about,' says Grove. 'Sometimes what Apple is doing may have an electrifying effect on the rest of us. It's nothing we couldn't have done, but Apple went ahead and did it.' Apple's iMac, it should be noted, is built around processors made by Motorola, not Intel. And Grove is not entirely uncritical of the translucent blue box; like millions of die-hard Mac fans, he decries the lack of a floppy disk drive. 'I would not have made that choice,' says TIME's 1997 Man of the Year."
__________________________ Digital Guy Sez:
Ok, let me gently point out the problem here... Andy, if you read this, understand that I have great respect for you. But I think your last comment illustrates WHY the rest of the industry doesn't do the "next thing" before Apple does. Of course you wouldn't have made that decision! It requires a great leap of faith, something that some companies (INCLUDING APPLE) lose the ability to do when they worry too much about what people will think initially.
Sometimes you have to do something that looks really stupid on the surface to make something stand out. My take on it? Floppies are dead, and have been dead for a couple of years. Yet the "next thing" isn't as clear as it should be -- Zip? Superdrive? Jaz? Something else entirely?
Steve has apparently chosen to let people decide what the next removable's going to be. It's like making do with a knife when what you need is a screw driver: Taking the knife away forces you to go out and BUY one that best suits your needs. May the best removable win!

Secrets In The War Against WindowsNT
Welcome to The Event Horizon. What I want to do here is talk about the future - the future of technology and the future of computing with a technical slant. I will talk about Apple Computer, Inc. But I will also talk about things you never heard of, and, with any luck, make your brain hurt. Perhaps you will think about things in a new way, and perhaps you'll be entertained as well. Feel free to let me know how I'm doing. - More:

People Lister is a Mac-only easy-to-use addressbook that helps you remember everything about the people you know: birthdays, phone numbers, email addresses, or anything else. Now that the network is up and a data management strategy is in place, the time has come for the network administrator to develop a disaster recovery plan. Disaster recovery plans account for financial and management oriented contingencies in case of a disaster. This week's column will focus on formulating a disaster recovery plan that is right for your organization. Network administrators implement most disaster recovery plans in stages to accommodate for resource limitations, but no company should be completely without a disaster recovery plan or statement.
