Subject: Tidbit - True Story

This tidbit is from:

Rob Lewis, <rob@whidbey.com>

Yesterday I was standing in line at the snack bar on the ferry taking me
from my island home to Seattle.

The guy behind me notices that I'm carrying a PC mail-order catalog and
asks "You in the market for a PC?"

No, I said.

He said, I've got a Pentium 400 that I'll make you a heck of a deal on.

I said, I wouldn't have one. I use Macs.

He sighed and said, I used to have a Mac. But I got talked into getting
rid of it and getting this P400. But I'm having so many problems with it
that I'm going to dump it and get a new G-3.

Score another one!

This announcement is from:

Domi Miyamoto, <domim@cnet.com>

3D Klondike is Freeverse Software's new iMac version of Burning Monkey
Solitaire which is currently being Premiered on CNET Download.com. Having
replaced the monkeys with such computer-related personalities as Steve
Jobs, Jen (Freeverse Software's spokesperson) with her new polar bear
companion, an animated iMac, and Bill Gates (who may never live down the
antics of that pie-throwing anarchist), 3D Klondike irreverently
celebrates the release of Apple's latest computer with a slick game of
cards packed full of Windows-slamming sound bytes and funny gag effects.

Subject: PR - theGRADER 1.5.1

This announcement is from:

<Thanl@aol.com>

Than'l Interactive <http://www.thanl.com/> is pleased to announce a new
release of theGRADER, the easy and powerful Macintosh freeware grading
program. theGRADER 1.5.1 is immediately available for download from
Than'l Interactive's website and will soon be available from various
freeware/shareware sources across the web.

DESCRIPTION...
When I began teaching I spent quite a bit of my time figuring scores,
grading, adding, subtracting and multiplying . Time and again I searched
for a simple utility which would allow me to keep track of my students,
their grades, and comments on their work without making me look at the
ugly graphs and charts of spreadsheet applications. theGRADER is that
utility. It tracks assignments and figures grades for an entire class
throughout a course. It is made to be simple, powerful and clean.

FEATURES...
Student Names & Information... Students are listed in alphabetical order.
Each student name may be accompanied by additional information such as
phone numbers, student numbers, addresses, etc.

Graded Items... Courses may have up to 20 graded items. Each item is
assigned its own percentage of the final grade. Grades may be given in
percent or letter grade formats.

Comments... For each student you may type comments, or enter comments
using theCOMMENTER, an automatic commenting utility built into theGRADER.

MidTerm & Final Grades... theGRADER will figure MidTerm and Final grades
for each student, and list them as both percentages and letter grades.

Grading Schemes... Eight different grading schemes are provided to
satisfy all teaching needs. Grading Schemes include 4 Point Spreads, 5
Point Spreads, 10 Point Spreads, Pass Fail, Letter Grades Only, and more.

Saving... theGRADER saves all new information as it is entered. Grades
and comments for individual students or a whole class may be saved as
plain text files accessible by any word processing program.

Printing... theGRADER will print out individual student reports including
all grades, student information (name, telephone, etc.) and comments.
theGRADER will also print out a class list with all midterm and final
grades.

Subject: PR - Birthdays and Such Updates

This announcement is from:

<RonLichty@aol.com>

As the author, I'd like to share three announcements about Birthdays and
Such, the tiny Macintosh shareware application that reminds you of the
important birthdays and anniversaries in your life.

Birthdays and Such, while it is a very calendar-based application, is --
and always has been -- year 2000 ready. As 1999 (and then 2000)
approaches, I've begun to receive inquiries about Y2K- Readiness, so it's
clear I need to share this. Birthdays and Such makes extensive use of the
built-in Macintosh date routines. While those routines had a Feb. 29 bug
at one point that I had to work around, their design is the core of why,
as we all know, the Macintosh itself is and always has been year-2000
ready -- and why Birthdays and Such is, too. (To make doubly sure, from
the very first version in 1993, I tested dates in 1999, dates in 2000,
dates in 2001, and transitions from December 30 to December 31 to January
1 from 1999 into 2000. Birthdays and Such has always passed.)

I'm pleased to announce that Birthdays and Such is not only available
from AOL's libraries and the web-based Macintosh shareware libraries, it
now has its own web site for downloading and information at:

<http://members.aol.com/RonLichty/Birthdays>

Current users of Birthdays and Such should check out the page devoted to
the creative uses to which users have put Birthdays and Such..., at:

<http://members.aol.com/RonLichty/Birthdays/uses.html>

Birthdays and Such is only 17K, launches very fast, takes almost no RAM,
and will remind you of -- in addition to birthdays and anniversaries --
home maintenance reminders, doctor appointments and user group meetings.
Birthdays and Such runs on almost every Macintosh computer that's been
made since 1986 -- Mac Plus through the latest PowerMacs. It requires
only System 6, but takes advantage of System 7 and OS 8 features when
available.

Thanks for supporting shareware!

Subject: ?? - Looking For A Postscript File Viewer

This request is from:

Fred Hickernell, <fred@hkbu.edu.hk>

I am looking for a good viewer for postscript files on the Macintosh,
something like Ghostview on Unix. So far I have tried

o MacGS -- nice screen output, but poor navigation features (it cannot
display a previous page or jump ahead several pages), and

o Ghostview (part of CMacTex) -- good navigation, but poor quality screen
output (jaggy fonts)

Does anyone have a better alternative? Thanks for your help.

Subject: PR - Folder Action Setup 1.0.1

This announcement is from:

Bill Cheeseman, <cheeseb@mediaone.net>

Folder Action Setup 1.0.1 is available for download at:

It is a control panel application for managing Mac OS 8.5 folder actions,
which are AppleScripts that can be attached to any folder. Folder Action
Setup requires Mac OS 8.5, which is scheduled for public release on
October 17, 1998.

Read the web page for more information. Improvements in this version are
listed at the bottom of the page. Complete instructions in Mac OS 8.5
Apple Help form are included with the download.

To install, drop the Folder Action Setup control panel on your closed
System Folder, and it will be auto-routed to your Control Panels folder.
Install the help files by dragging the Folder Action Setup Help folder
into the Help folder in your System folder.

Folder Action Setup is shareware for $7.50 US (or $5.00 US cash). This is
a fully-functional trial version. After a 30-day free trial period, the
ability to attach folder actions to your folders using Folder Action
Setup will be disabled until you apply your registration key. (The 30-day
trial period begins running the first time you launch folder action
setup. You therefore may not want to try running it until you have
installed Mac OS 8.5 -- it won't work until then, anyway.)

The AppleScript Sourcebook is the world wide web's foremost site for
AppleScript information. Updated about once a month, it gives you the
latest AppleScript news and events, expert tips, many sample scripts,
links to hundreds of other sites containing scripts and information, and
photographs of some leading figures in the AppleScript community.
