This announcement is from:
Clixsounds, <email@clixsounds.com>
Clixsounds is pleased to announce the release of its latest software product, "YO!", The Alert Sound Randomizer. YO! consists of a control panel-like console that lists up to 1,000 sounds in a user-specified sounds folder and randomly plays one of those sounds as the user's alert sound, or "beep". Through the "YO! Console," users can give each sound its own volume level and randomization priority. With the randomization priority feature, users can set their favorite sounds to play more often than the others.
YO! works with not only Macintosh sound files, but .WAV, .AIFF, .AU, and other popular formats, in addition to allowing users to record their own sounds. Sounds can be previewed right in the console, and sounds can be added to the list through drag and drop. Better yet, YO! doesn't require sounds to be installed in the System File, which frees up valuable system RAM. YO! is Mac OS 8.5-compatible, and even takes advantage of many new OS 8.5 features.
YO!'s interface is truly unique and easy to use, combining eye-catching visuals with appealing interface sounds. YO! employs both Balloon Help and its own complete on-line help system containing detailed usage information. YO!'s interface is also 100% Kaleidoscope- and 8.5 theme-savvy.
YO! is offered both as a shareware product with ten demo alert sounds and on CD-ROM, which includes over 1,000 high-quality stereo alert sounds for use with YO!. The shareware version, which includes the same features as the CD-ROM version, is available for a $20 shareware fee, and the CD-ROM with sounds is available for $29.95.
YO!'s complete feature list:
- - Have up to 1,000 sounds randomized as your alert sound - - Import „SND¾, .WAV, .AIFF, .AU and other sound formats - - Record your sounds right into the sounds list - - Drag and drop support for sound importing and folder selection - - Prioritize your favorite sounds to play more often - - Assign each sound its own volume level or use your system volume - - YO! doesn¼t load your installed sounds into RAM - - YO! plays your alert sounds asynchronously and doesn¼t slow your system down while a sound plays. - - YO displays your sounds¼ name, size, length, priority, and volume and the sounds can be sorted by any column - - YO! is OS 8.5 compatible and already supports many new 8.5 features like Navigation Services. - - YO! is Kaleidoscope-savvy - - YO! supports drag and drop of both sounds and sound folders - - Really cool interface and interface sounds - And more!
YO! is available for immediate download at the Clixsounds web site at <http://www.clixsounds.com>>, and both registration codes and the CD-ROM version can be ordered on-line, or by phone, FAX, or snail-mail.

10/6/98 UPDATE: Due to feedback, our proposed service conditions/features have changed. Although 94.5% of the votes currently processed have been a resounding 'Yes', if you voted 'No' before or didn't vote at all, please read this page again and fill out the form. Thanks for your consideration and help in pioneering this service! :-)
We are trying to gauge the Mac Community's interest in a central file storage/backup service that caters specifically to Mac users and is accessible anywhere the internet is accessible. It would be a replacement for the fileservice optionally offered by most ISP's for $5 per month, but in addition to those standard FTP services where you have all the benefits of keeping your important files on a rock-solid, backed-up UNIX server which is available from anywhere through the internet, you would also have the benefits of accessing those files through a standard, Mac-native fileserver. The ISP-like benefits would also include using your filespace as a personal web space <http://www.appleshare.com/~username/>
These benefits include access through the standard Mac OS Chooser (no more using cumbersome, crash-prone, FTP clients), direct application access to files stored on your remote drive (no more copying, changing, and copying back of files), all Mac files retain their identities when copied back and forth to the remote drive (just like copying files from one Mac to another), and all other unique AppleShare features (like DropBox sharing, etc.). But, because your files would be accessible via both FTP and AppleShare, you could easily share your files with friends who use Windows or UNIX and standard FTP clients.
So, you get a personal filespace with access to it through AppleShare IP, FTP, and web browser for $0.13 per megabyte per month (minimum of 40mb space). All we need from you, the Mac Community, before we commit thousands of dollars of hardware and software to this venture, is enough 'Yes' votes to justify our commitment. So, we're asking for at least 500 people to vote 'Yes' and pre-commit to our service.

Man! The agency that's handling display advertising placement for Apple in the Boston area is either incredibly lucky or has little gnomes wandering around looking for the perfect place for billboards...
On route 1A north of Boston, one of the main commuter roads into the city, one of the simple iMac billboards sits innocently paired with another ad. The other board is an ad for Trident gum, displaying a photograph of a toothbrush on a plain white background - only a tagline and the logo appear at the bottom of the ad.
Directly to the right of this board is the iMac ad: an iMac, photographed on a plain white background. The only text visible is the tagline that appears above: "Mental floss." Beautiful.
Another pairing nearby shows a television sitcom ad, with the requisite vapid actor-types hamming it up. Right next to this board is another iMac ad. Same setup, but the tagline "Chic not geek." Not quite as perfect, but it works!
Advertising for the irony-aware.
