Once again, Apple shows the way, this time by leading the migration to
USB -- a standard first promoted by the Wintel world, but still not
widely used.

Subject: PR - Inside Mac Games

This announcement is from:

IMG, <img@imgmagazine.com>

Apple is gaining momentum and so are Macintosh games! For the first time
in years, people are excited about the Macintosh. Developers are
fervently toiling on new products in anticipation of the iMac's success.
The good fortune is spilling onto Inside Mac Games, too. We made the
decision late in 1997 to scale the magazine down to just eight issues a
year. This was a cautionary move on our part, motivated by the dwindling
number of new Mac games being introduced.

Things have changed drastically, however; Lara Croft is making her way to
the Mac and it may not be long before we see the bright clashing of
light-sabres. This is good news for Mac users, good news for game
developers and good news for IMG.

Given this good fortune, Inside Mac Games is proud to announce a return
to ten issues a year. To celebrate we're offering a FREE copy of the Best
of Inside Mac Games 93-98 (a $9.95 value) with every new subscription
(subscriptions start as low as $39 a year!).

I co-authored an article in the current issue of Palaeontologia
Electronica. To the best of my knowledge this is the first time QTVR has
used images taken with a scanning electron microscope.

The article is at:

For those of you who prefer to jump straight to the QTVR object:

Note that the object has a hot spot on the prominent feature which allows
magnification from 75 to 1200 times when dragged from top to bottom.

Subject: Tidbit - Positive Mac Article In Miami Herald

This tidbit is from:

Charles Hurd, <gibson60@icanect.net>

The Miami Herald features a weekly column by Dan Keating on computers.
The article is consistently informative and interesting, although it is
all Wintel oriented and Macs haven't even been mentioned in quite a
while. However in his latest article on 7/30/98, he not only mentions but
speaks very highly of Macintosh, it's great new products and impressive
comeback.

The entire article can be found online at: <http://www.herald.com/> (Look
in the Living/Arts section)

A few words from the article:

"Here's an old idea that has become exciting again: You could buy a Mac.
Apple's MacOS computers are more attractive than they've been in years.
By simplifying it's product line and setting a clearer direction for the
platform's operating system, Apple has dramatically increased it's
appeal."

Sounds pretty good to me.

John Clark, <nftguru@mindspring.com>

MediaWrapper Light 2.0 is now available for download. In response to
overwhelming positive feedback for ZipWrapper, JazWrapper and CDWrapper,
I have taken time out to completely rewrite my wrapper program for
creating disk case liners, improving the speed and adding requested
features.

MediaWrapper Light 2.0 lets you scan a removable disk, and print out the
contents on a wrapper that you can insert into the disk case. Currently
MediaWrapper Light supports Zip, Jaz, CD-ROM, EZ Flyer, SyJet, SyQuest,
and MagnetoOptical Disks.

MediaWrapper Light offers the following features:

* Scan inside subfolders
* Scan PC disks (for all your Wintel friends)
* Prints Date Scanned and Space Available on disk
* Editable fields
* Logos or pictures can be added for all wrappers.
* MediaWrapper Light stores all settings including a default picture for
all wrappers
* MediaWrapper Light is also much faster then previous versions.

MediaWrapper Light is $10 shareware for new users. Registered users of
previous versions of ZipWrapper, JazzWrapper, EZWrapper, CDWrapper and
SyJetWrapper can upgrade to this new version for $5. Registered users of
two or more of the previous wrapper programs can upgrade for free.

owned and operated by John Clark. The previously release versions of
ZipWrapper, JazWrapper and CDWrapper have been well received around the
world and featured on CD in magazines such as MacAddict, MacWorld UK, and
the Japanese magazine, Mac Fan Internet. ZipWrapper was also listed by
the web site Webintosh, as the Cool Tool of the Week. (www.webintosh.com)

Subject: ?? - Apple Studio Display Tech Info Needed

This request is from:

Steve Sell, <sell@payload.com>

Our company is currently looking into using three or four Apple Studio
LCD displays for an experiment on a Space Shuttle mission. In order to do
this, however, we need to know some technical info which is not readily
available to the public and I thought some of your readers may be able to
help or get me in touch with the right people at Apple.

Info needed:

1) The EMI profile between 0.01 and 10,000 MHz (as well as the testing
protocol used to obtain the profile)

2) Operational voltage requirements - more to the point, it would be
great if we could power the displays off of a 28 VDC power source, so I
am looking for what modifications are necessary to accomplish this.

3) Materials list - needed to access flammability, off-gassing, and
toxicity.

All of these items are required to get Payload Safety Review Panel
approval to fly the displays. EMI is our biggest concern. However, since
the display has several EMI certifications, the testing must have already
been done, so I am hoping the data is easily accessible.

If anyone either has access to the above information or knows whom I can
contact to obtain it, I would greatly appreciate the input. If necessary,
we are prepared to sign an NDA to obtain access.
