Get Wid Da Beat - -------------- By Jonah Jones <jonah@macosdaily.com>
This past weekend, I got psychedelic. I got jazzed. I got transported, man. And I didn't even take a single hit of acid. But, whew, what a trip! And all you need is your ordinary everyday Mac to take you to transports of musical delight that Mozart would have killed for, and Beethoven probably is turning over in his grave about right now.--Read on-- <http://www.macosdaily.com/jones/080798.shtml>

Carl Maniscalco, <caman@earthlink.net>
I recently worked a temporary job at a high-speed copy/quick print firm, filling in for their resident designer while he was on vacation.
Among the equipment in the shop was a Xerox Docutech 40. This is a very expensive, high-end piece of equipment which can be used either as a standard color copier or, through a software RIP (Raster Image Processor, a device which interprets PostScript language files and converts them into a form the printer can understand), as a high-resolution color PostScript laser printer. Xerox offers two different RIPs for this machine; the Fiery RIP, running on a Pentium II/Windows NT computer, or the Splash RIP on a Macintosh. The firm I worked at used the Splash RIP, which ran on a Power Mac 8600.
The second day I was there, the internal Zip drive on the 8600 gave up the ghost. This was a relatively minor problem, but I called for service anyway since the entire hardware/software package is leased from Xerox and free service is included in the deal. When the field technician arrived the following morning, he was at a bit of a loss. I actually had to help him with some pretty basic stuff, which seemed to embarrass him considerably.
"I'm sorry," he said "but I don't know much about the Splash. I have to work on Fiery RIPs two or three times a week but, in the two years since it was released, this is only the second time I've ever had to work on on a Splash. In fact, Xerox field technicians love the Splash and we recommend it over the Fiery whenever we're asked just for that reason."
Because of their high cost (over $100,000), these machines are often kept running 24 hours a day, seven days a week, cranking out as much work as possible in order to make them pay for themselves. The fact that a Mac can hold up to this kind of use so much better than a Wintel box can is a striking example of it's technical superiority.

Date: Wed, 12 Aug 1998 08:06:31 -0800 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: PR - A Mac Desktop Makeover Every Week
This announcement is from:
Jerry Kindall, <kindall@manual.com>
Manual Labor announced today the immediate availability of a Sampler for its new Texturations Subscription Series, a service that delivers an original, full-screen desktop picture to subscribers every week. The freely-distributable Sampler gives Macintosh users a taste of what they'll receive if they subscribe to the service, which begins September 1, 1998.
The Sampler is available now in four different resolutions from Manual Labor's Web site, and will soon also be available on Info-Mac mirrors around the world. The four JPEG images can be used with the Desktop Pictures control panel in Mac OS 8.0 or 8.1, or under older System Software versions with the addition of a utility like Francois Pottier's shareware Decor, which is also available on Info-Mac.
Kindall, who released a set of thirteen desktop images in the freeware "Texturations 1.5" package last February, notes that his new work for the Texturations Subscription Series is significantly more sophisticated and visually interesting than that found in the earlier package. That set, by the way, received a 4-out-of-5 rating from GUI Central <http://cafe.ambrosiasw.com/gui-central/>, which noted that it contained "some real gems."
The Texturation Subscription Series costs as little as 75 cents per issue (US$39 a year) during the introductory period. (Shorter subscriptions are also available: 6 months for $22 or 3 for $13.) The introductory period expires December 31. Subscribers can cancel at any time and receive a full refund of the unfulfilled portion of their subscription. In a unique satisfaction guarantee, subscribers can also request a free one-week extension of their subscription whenever they are dissatisfied with an image for any reason. Introductory subscribers will be able to renew their subscriptions at the special rate through the year 2000.
To download the Texturations Subscription Series Sampler, and for information on subscribing to the service, visit the service's Web site at <http://www.manual.com/tss/>. Questions and comments can be e-mailed to <tss@manual.com>.

Date: Wed, 12 Aug 1998 08:06:29 -0800 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: PR - ModifyWindow 1.0 Released
This announcement is from:
Jeff Benjamin, <jeff@stepupsoftware.com>
StepUp Software is pleased to announce the official release of modifyWindow Plug-in for FileMaker Pro 4 for Macintosh.
modifyWindow allows the FileMaker developer to customize some of the look and feel of their database windows in ways not provided by the tool from FileMaker, Inc.
FileMaker Pro developers need to provide navigational control in their solutions so users stay within the context of their use of the solution. "We first aided in this need with the removeMenu plugin. We're now adding an additional level of control by being able to remove the close box from any FileMaker window," said Jeff Benjamin, developer of the modifyWindow plugin. "Often a user will close a window by clicking on the close box rather than what the solution developer intended for them to use: a button on the layout. By removing the close box, the user will always navigate out of a window as intended." As Steven Blackwell, Partner Member in the FileMaker Solutions Alliance, has said about the removeMenu Plugin: "That will make these solutions more stable and will lessen user-induced "accidents"."
modifyWindow also adds support for renaming windows. Window names as they appear in a window's title bar are an important part of a solutions "polished" look. FileMaker by itself forces window names to be the name of the database, like "invoice_.fp3" and "line_items_.fp3". With the modifyWindow plugin, solution developers can use user-friendly window names such as "Invoices" and "Line Items".
modifyWindow Plug-in is available now and may be ordered online at the StepUp Software web site <http://www.stepupsoftware.com/>. Cost is $30. Site licenses and distribution licenses are also only $30.
A fully functional demo version can be downloaded at:

Date: Wed, 12 Aug 1998 08:06:30 -0800 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: $$ - Special Offer MarginMaker Plus
This special offer is from:
Stephen Becker, <steve@macease.com>
MarginMaker Plus provides a quick, easy, and consistent way for setting all four margins when printing a document in most programs.
Additionally, MarginMaker Plus provides a WYSIWYG display of active fonts, lets you set custom point sizes when printing, allows you to select any active font for printing, and lets you print any selected text from your document.
MarginMaker Plus provides all these features yet doesn't require you to launch an application or remember any keyboard commands!
Requirements:
A Macintosh computer with System 7.0 or later and a 68020 or later processor.
Some Of The Features Included In MarginMaker Plus:
1. MarginMaker Plus includes a popup list of all your active fonts in their actual typefaces. 2. MarginMaker Plus provides you with a display of all your current margin settings. 3. MarginMaker Plus is always available when you need it, yet can have its visibility quickly toggled with a single click or a keyboard command. 4. MarginMaker Plus lets you set a custom point size for your printed document. 5. MarginMaker Plus lets you set the point size for the printed document without affecting the original document. 6. MarginMaker Plus lets you set a font for your printed output without affecting your original document. 7. MarginMaker Plus includes a "Print One Copy" feature for quickly printing a single copy. 8. MarginMaker Plus lets you select a particular section of text from your document for printing. You may also customize the font and point size when printing this selection. 9. MarginMaker Plus includes Balloon Help and an additional online Help system.
One example of where MarginMaker Plus is especially useful is when printing with 3-hole punched paper (or other paper that contains holes). It prevents "losing" text in the holes and prevents the mess that can be caused when an inkjet printer sprays ink through the holes.
A free, fully-functional demonstration version may be downloaded at <http://www.kagi.com/MacEase>. A registered version that includes a 30-day money back satisfaction guarantee is available at <http://order.kagi.com/?L8T2>. Some additional info about MarginMaker Plus may be found at <http://www.kagi.com/MacEase>.
While the regular registration fee is only $15., for the next 30 days I'm pleased to offer Evangelist readers an even lower, special price of $12. To receive the special price it is necessary to use the <http://order.kagi.com/?L8T2> URL.
