This request is from:
Kai Matthews, <kaimuse@apocalypse.org>
I"m currently in the proces of upgrading my house's net connection, etc., and have picked up a used Powermac 8600/300 to use as a Unix server (MachTen/WebTen, BSD Unix on top of MacOS, in keeping with my no-Wintel-ever standards), so the issue of UPS's has become more important than ever.
I've gotten used to seeing SmartUPS software (which communicates with the server to initiate a controlled shutdown before the battery runs down) being available only for Wintel machines, from vendors like APC. The NT server that used to be here was on such. (I've had enough exposure to NT to last me several lifetimes, [no] thank you very much.)
Does anyone know of options for the Mac? Even something that at least talks to Unix servers, assuming MachTen can fool an app into thinking it's talking to an actual Unix box?
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

This tidbit is from:
Rich Long, <rcl@ultranet.com>
I attended the iMac launch at my local CompUSA, helping to answer questions from about noon to 5 PM. It was GREAT! There was a lot of traffic, and huge interest in the iMac. I think somewhere around 25 units went out on Saturday. The Epson Stylus 600 (with USB adapter) was also a big hit.
On Sunday, I was chatting with my wife about iMac, after showing her the full-page ad in the CompUSA circular. She, as a casual Mac user since about 1990, asked what was "so special" about it. I started to explain about the new case, G3 speed, 10/100 Ethernet for networks and cable modems, etc., and then stopped myself. I whipped out my trusty PowerBook and fired up the Simplicity Shootout video with Johann and Brodie vs. Adam. That did it! She was hooked! Now she wants to get an iMac as a Christmas present for her folks.
I've heard that Steve wants to turn that video into a commercial. I say "go for it!" It works!
I think sometimes we in the computer industry can lose sight of what the consumer wants, which is -simplicity-. The Mac has always excelled at that, and the iMac is even better.

No guarantees, but it looks like we're about a month away from the book's release. I've already been given the final version of the cover art, which you can see at my Web site. I'll be happy to answer any questions about the book, so please visit my Web site, then send a message if you've got an interest or concern.

Also, please take a look at the beta version of my new Web site, Mac-Upgrade.com, which I plan to make the premiere source for upgrade and troubleshooting news covering Mac hardware and other topics. Plus you'll find regular news, columns and hardware reviews. The site will soon move to its own domain (www.mac-upgrade.com) but, for now, I've got the beta up on my current server:
<http://www.shutup101.com/todd/macupgrade.html>
Let me know what you think. One last thanks to all the Evangelistas who sent in tips that ended up, in my opinion, making this a much better book than it otherwise would have been.

Date: Mon, 24 Aug 1998 12:56:49 -0800 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: Tidbit - Parallel Computing On Macintosh
Keyword: Advocacy, Wicked Cool Stuff, Science
This tidbit is from:
Dean Dauger <dauger@physics.ucla.edu>
I am announcing a project named AppleSeed facilitating the use of Power Macs as a parallel computing platform. My professor, Dr. Viktor K. Decyk, and I have built a message passing library for the Mac OS, and we need your help to encourage others to use Power Macs and our library to help satisfy their high performance computing needs.
Our group at UCLA focuses on computer simulations of plasma physics and, as a group, has experience running code on the cutting edge of high performance computing for over twenty years. We have run our code on the Cray C90, Cray T3D, Cray T3E, Intel Paragon, the IBM SP series, Fujitsu VPP-500, SGI Origin, and many more.
Using the Program to Program Communications Toolbox built into the Mac OS, we have built a Message-Passing Interface (MPI) library for the Mac, which we call MacMPI. MPI is an industry-standard (the parallel computing industry, that is) programming interface for transferring messages between processors on a parallel computer. Consequently, MPI facilitates easy porting of code between most parallel computing platforms. We are hoping to do the same for the Mac.
Using Absoft Corporation's Fortran compiler, not only have we confirmed Apple's commercials regarding the Pentium line with our physics codes, but we have seen performance per node from four Power Mac G3/266's comparable to that of four nodes of a Cray T3E (one of most powerful parallel computers to date, each node having a 900 MHz DEC Alpha). Noting that the cost per node of a Cray T3E is roughly US$40,000, we believe the Macintosh platform has a performance/price ratio worth considering.
We are using Power Mac G3/266's running Mac OS 8.1, ordered with 288 MB of RAM and 100BaseT Ethernet, and a 100BaseT switch (no custom hardware or modifications to the OS), making it the only "plug and play" parallel computer in the world.
The cost of such a parallel Mac system can be comparable to the cost of CPU time at certain supercomputing facilities. And maintenance of a cluster of Macs is that of any other Mac network, but other high performance solutions require full-time system administrators.
Envision the possibilities:
1. A cluster of dedicated Power Mac G3's in a room.
2. Power Mac G3's located at people's desks, used by day individually, used at night and on weekends as a supercomputer.
3. A computer room full of iMac's at a university: A student lab by day, a (very attractive-looking) supercomputer by night.
Our group is implementing partly #1 and partly #2. The Statistical Mathematics department at UCLA is planning to do #3.
You can access information about the project and source code at:
We would like to see feedback from others, including Apple itself. We are offering the MacMPI.f library freely to anyone who is interested, especially those in the scientific community. Dr. Decyk and I have been longtime Mac users, and we hope this can help convince people to go with the Mac. We see this as a potential new market for Apple and the Macintosh platform.
If you are or if you know anyone who might be interested in such a computing solution, please have a look at our web site, drop us a line, and spread the word. Go Mac!
Thank you for your attention, Dean Dauger Graduate Student in Physics at UCLA <http://www.physics.ucla.edu/~dauger/> __________________________ Digital Guy Sez:
Folks, this is incredibly cool... You too can have you're very own supercomputer for about $12,000 (US). If I understand this correctly, this should be a scalable solution -- add more Macs, have an even more powerful solution. It's taking the distributed computing model the next logical step. :)

This tidbit is from:
IMG, <img@imgmagazine.com>
The iMac. By now you've heard about, read about, and seen tons of pictures of it. With the release of the iMac, a question many gamers are asking themselves is: Is the iMac a gamer's machine? Will the lack of a PCI slot hamper the iMac as a great gaming machine?
Inside Mac games did some digging and talked with a few Macintosh game developers to get their thoughts on the iMac. Check out the entire article at:
