Recently, I posted an article about attending the iMac launch at my local CompUSA. Since then, I've heard from many Evangelistas (hi!!) asking where to download the video of the Simplicity Shootout video with Johann and Brodie vs. Adam. I'm glad to hear from you all, but my mailbox is bursting!

This tidbit is from:
William B. McHargue, <William@mchargue.com>
A recent "Cyber View" editorial in Scientific American (Sept. '98) talks about the usability, or lack thereof, of today's computers (mostly Windows XX).
Wendy Grossman writes:
"Some recent changes--such as Windows 95/98/NT's registry, apparently designed to be read and edited in the original Martian by people who like walking over a 1,000-foot canyon on a tightrope with no safety net--seem to me purely lethal."
My experience with intelligent people that use computers, but don't want to have to open up the hood, echos the frustration Ms. Grossman reflects in her article.

Al Curtis, <DRAGONet@delphi.com>
I just got back from watching Wesley Snipes' new movie "Blade". In addition to some serious butt kicking involving vampire bad guys, it appears that the movie producers decided to kick some butt for Apple as well.
At several points in the movie, you'll find Apple PowerBooks in use, with some very nice looking 3D software ruinning. It's hard to miss the rainbow logo when they do a semi-close up of the 'puter! :)
If you're a fan of Snipes, go see the movie.
If you're a fan of Apple, go see the movie.
You shouldn't be disappinted :)

This plea for help is from:
<david@pogueman.com>
I'm writing a Macworld column about the power of protest by Mac fans. I'm looking for examples where "no-Macintosh" policies were revoked in the face of Mac-user pressure.
Examples:
* Yale did a complete about-face on its "no Macs" policy, bowing to public pressure.
* Wells Fargo Bank has reinstated Mac e-banking, after receiving over 700 phone calls from Mac fans.
* U. of Waterloo revoked its no-Macs policy after the faculty joined the students in protest.
Can anyone help me with additional factual examples? Are there any school boards, companies, or other organizations where Macs were on their way out--until the people spoke?
Many thanks!
David Pogue, Macworld columnist <http://www.davidpogue.com> (book discounts, baby pictures, song spoofs, etc.)

iMac Demo Days Sept 5/6
iMac excitement continues... The traffic report for this weekend is in: jams are expected in the aisles of many authorized Apple resellers as interest in iMac and back-to-school preparations drive customers into stores. So Apple would like to sign up as many volunteer traffic officers as we can.
You won't need a whistle and you won't need a summons book--just a willingness to answer customer questions about iMac and explain what makes it such a revolutionary consumers product. If you're interested and can spare us a few hours to volunteer , please visit the following web site for additional details and to find a participating reseller in your area:

Date: Mon, 31 Aug 1998 13:16:17 -0800 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: PR - Stalker Announces iMac Specials
This announcement is from:
Ali Liptrot, Stalker Software, Inc., <Ali@stalker.com>
Stalker Software, Inc. has announced a five user license for their PortShare Pro application geared especially for the new iMac Users and a 20% discount off their SCSIShare program from now until December 1st, 1998.
PortShare Pro allows serial devices such as modems, printers, label writers, and plotters to be shared over an AppleTalk/EtherNet network. PortShare Pro will allow applications like PPP or other dial out applications to dial out from a shared modem. Passwords can be assigned and modem pools can be created. PortShare Pro works in the background as a server/client control panel.
iMac Compatibility
Since the new iMac's only have Universal Serial Bus ports, connecting any serial device directly is not possible. PortShare Pro offers a solution. By using Portshare Pro users will be able gain access simply by installing the control panels on networked machines and creating the ports necessary to print to the office printer or dial out using the modem, etc.
Popular in the education and SOHO markets, PortShare Pro has always had a ten user license and an unlimited user license. The iMac has created a demand for the new five user license. Stalker will market the five user license as an electronic copy only. This will be available direct from Stalker for $59.00 USD.
In addition to the new 5 user PortShare Pro license, Stalker if offering 20% off SCSIShare. SCSIShare allows a scanner to become "networkable" freeing the need for a dedicated scan station. This allows the individual in the office with the scanner to remain free from interruption from someone needing to use his/her work station to scan. SCSIShare is $89.00 for a ten user license, but a 20% discount is available on any purchase from now until December 1st, 1998.
SCSIShare works with most name brand scanners that supports the SCSI interface. The product allows connections across multiple AppleTalk zones at transfer rates up to 10MB/sec, depending on network media and traffic. It runs in the background and provides password protection.
Demos of all Stalker's products are available on their web site at <http://www.stalker.com>.

This tidbit is from:
Peter Michael Forster, <pmforster@findhorn.org>
Today in England and Wales, GCSE exam results (the main school exam here) arrive through pupil's mailboxes. The results for one pupil made the national news on television and radio because he was the youngest ever, at age 6, to receive a GCSE pass. The usual age for taking GCSEs is 16. It was in Computer Science and the boy (sorry I didn't notice his name) was filmed working on his laptop computer - a Mac of course.

Woohoo! Five hundred Myth players took arms against each other in Bungie's first Platform Wars tournament. A month later, the bloodied victor stands atop the exploded corpses of all 250 PC players. Panamon, the Mac Champion, wins the coveted Bungie Trow statue.
<http://www.bungie.net/>
(Interesting tidbit: the statue mold has cracked, and the previous statue went to Sorcha Payne of MacAddict magazine, so the only two Trow in existence are safely in the hands of Mac users.)
In the overpopulated world of PC games, "Deer Hunter" was huge. If you've been to computer store in the last few months, then you've most likely seen the "safety vest" orange of the "Deer Hunter" box with it's targeted buck and oddly comic "Rewards injuring non-threatening creatures" RSAC advisory on the cover. I was intrigued by its popularity, so I got a copy. Now that I've played it for a couple weeks...well...
