This is the original poster Rob Morton. Unfortunately I did not have time to verify everything as the time constraints were rather tight. Great Plains is not dropping support for the Mac, and I apologize for any sudden heart attacks I may have given their happy users.
Sorry for the misunderstanding, but we will still probably get a consultant to help us get the whole thing up and running.
Thanks for the understanding, Rob Morton

Great Plains Dynamics is *not* discontinued for Macintosh!
Great Plains announced that it is discontinuing development on Great Plains Accounting (now at version 7), which is the old, command line application. This thing is a beast.
It was replaced, in essence, by Great Plains Dynamics, an entirely different family of products, entirely rewritten with a new code base. It came out around the same time as the Quadra (remember how *powerful* they were?), and required the muscle of those 68040 muscle machines to run. Great Plains Dynamics is currently at Version 5, is alive and well, and is continuing on both Mac and PC.
John - you may want to rewrite this into a simpler note for The Masses; I wouldn't want folks to think one of their best options for Mac accounting was going away - it isn't!
Rob - your search may be over. If you're using Great Plains Accounting (the old stuff), you just need to upgrade to Great Plains Dynamics. If you're using Dynamics already - you're set.
Good luck!

This request is from:
Chuck Harrell <ch67@earthlink.net>
I am fighting an uphill battle. I am a Mac Missionary who works as a writer/producer/editor for a TV station in Raleigh, NC. My worst nightmare has come true - the engineering department (who has 90% of the control over what editing systems we purchase) has invested in an NT based Matrox Digisuite with Speed Razor as the non-linear editing package.
I admit, I have always been a Mac man. I am a former Media 100 editor that dearly loves and misses his Mac based Media 100 (which was at my former job.) I could troubleshoot and maintain the Mac without an engineer or with no real computer experience in my background. My current problem? The NT system doesn't handle digital video as -well-as the Mac.
These engineers don't have to edit on the system, nor even maintain it. They have no experience with a Mac (one engineer owns a Performa and holds that machine up as the same standard for all Macs.) To get to the point, I am dealing with people who "don't know jack about the Mac."
The opportunity might be presenting itself that would allow my department to purchase a non-linear editing system that is our own (the NT box is being shared by 3 departments.) Now, I know the Mac can do a better job with digital video than any NT box, but I need some help to persuade the "corporate" guys to buy a Mac, not another Matrox Digisuite. This is a serious appeal for help from one Mac advocate to another, so please, wherever you can help. please do!!
The Chief Engineer hates Macs. He has arguments that from a technical standpoint, i can't argue because I am not a tech, I am a user, an operator. I need some ammo to counter his arguments. I know some of these answers exist on the web page, but I need to present all of them to you in hopes you can help me with evidence that I can use to prove the Mac is a better platform for digital editing.
His arguments are these:
1. Developers are moving away from the Mac towards NT for digital video. He says it's cheaper for developers to write NT programs because there are more developers out there, therefore cheaper editing systems, etc.
2. He says that NT is a more stable system for digital video. I know that is junk, but where do I find evidence to back up my argument?
3. Inscriber Extreme (only available for Windows) is the CG package they purchased for the NT box. Their argument is that there is no CG program for the Mac that even compares, that Adobe and other software developers are now moving to NT and the Mac is just floundering.
4. The chief engineer also said he read a report that the iMac was having trouble staying connected to the internet. Is this true, or just more Apple bashing?
5. One big argument is that "both systems have things they are better at," and that it's just "what you are used to." My point is he isn't using the equipment on a daily basis, he has no experience with a Mac polus I have edited on a Mac for 1.5 years!! I know the system is better, I just have a hard time coming up with concrete evidence.
6. Another argument is that even Media 100 is going NT - I know it isn't because that Mac is failing anywhere, but what do I say to that? Customers who are too stupid to buy a Mac forced them into developing an NT version? That good business says sell product on any platform you can?
7. And this one is just for me - I would really love to know where I can find the QT Movie of Bill Gates not being able to start up a Windows machine at Comdex. Do you have a copy?
I really appreciate anything you can help me with. I am aware that some of these things are addressed on the web site, and I have tried to find most of them. Any help you could send my way would be greatly appreciated.

Date: Tue, 20 Oct 1998 08:06:31 -0700 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: PR - New Release of the FinderViewContextMenu
This announcement is from:
Wolfgang Ante, <wante@artissoftware.com>
New release of the FinderViewContextMenu compatible with Mac OS 8.5
The FinderViewContextMenu makes using different Finder views a lot easier. It allows you to save Finder view settings to a contextual menu entry. This way you can easily collect your personal set of Finder views and reapply them with a simple control-click.
Although Mac OS 8.5 now has standard view options that simplify customizing views, this still does not help if you have more than one favorite view setting per category. For example: With the FinderViewContextMenu you can save a "List & Size" and a "List & Date & Size" view and reapply them with a simple control-click. Without the FinderViewContextMenu you would have to settle for one favorite list view setting that is your standard view and every time you want your other favorite you would have to open the View Options dialog box, set the appropriate checkboxes and click on the OK button.
Improvements in version 1.0.4:
- - Handles Mac OS 8.5 icon and button views correctly - - Applying saved views is a lot faster with Mac OS 8.5 - - Now also saves the sort direction of list views - - New preferences file format, automatically converts old preferences - - Improved internal storage
The FinderViewContextMenu is still US$ 9,- shareware and available in english, japanese, german and french versions. It works with all versions of Mac OS 8, including the new Mac OS 8.5. Previous versions have been download.com's Most Popular.
You can find more info about the FinderViewContextMenu at the website:
<http://www.artissoftware.com/finderview/>
You can download version 1.0.4 of the FinderViewContextMenu from:
