This request is from:
I really need some help on this one. I work in a theater here in France and we're creating a place for people to discover the Internet. Since I'm in charge of this project, I thought that two G3 servers (one of them is for backups, etc...) and 10 iMacs would be the best solution, but yesterday I was told that we need kind of a credit card system: not real credit cards, but our own system where people would have cards that would include a certain number of units and units would be taken off for every ?? minutes...
And that's where my problem comes : my boss knows that it exists on PCs, he has seen some. But do you know any solutions for the Mac ? I would really hate doing that on Windows...
The idea I have is that we would put one system per computer, and when the units on the card come to zero, the computer would stop (kind of a "nice freeze" :-) ) and the card could be filled again on the server - but don't hesitate to write me if you have any solution.
I'm sure the Evangelists can help me on this one. I'll post another mail telling the different solutions that I was told if you're interested.

This job offer is from:
Are you someone with a broad range of Macintosh experience? Do you enjoy helping people learn? Do you want to make a difference?
St Croix Falls, WI School District (Located about 50 mi NE of Minneapolis/St Paul) is looking for a computer support "guru".
We believe that computers are not an end to themselves but rather tools that help people develop in all learning areas. We have invested in technology with this in mind. Our district has over 300 Macintosh computers (nearly all PowerPC and many G3's!) networked together and available to the students and teachers. The student body is about 1200 students.
We are looking for someone to help us make sure that these wonderful tools are accessible to their fullest extent. In order to help us accomplish this goal the successful candidate will need to be able to:
Set up, network, configure, and install software.
Troubleshoot, repair, and when possible prevent, system, networking, and application conflicts and failures.
Administer an ethernet network with Internet access. (File servers are Apple Share IP based.)
Create and maintain basic databases for storing computer and support information.
Assist in the development of support procedures and documentation. (We expect people to learn to solve many of their own problems and not become overly dependent on you!)
Basic hardware repair/replacement would also be a plus.
Some windows experience would also be helpful. (We do have a few of those around as well.)
If you are interested in this position, tell us how your knowledge and experience would be applied to accomplishing these tasks.

PrintGuard - a control panel to restrict user access to network printers you wish to protect. Useful for your company, university, cybercafe, wherever there are free access computers with network printers. And this can save trees too!
Imagine your network includes a dye sublimation printer and somebody tries to use it to print a 300 pages manual... and just think how much this will cost you! PrintGuard will warn this thoughtless user that the printer he/she chose is an expensive one to use.
The new version can now limit access to up to six printers.

This follow-up is from:
As you know we have been running a poll for the past 6 weeks or so.
We have now closed the poll and the results are quite interesting. We have had over 1,000 responses from people asking for an SMTP plug-in, a POP plug-in, a TelNet session plug-in and many other requests (some of which were rather obscure!). We have posted a brief analysis of our findings at <http://listserver.amsys.co.uk/TCPIPpoll/> if you are interested.

The Digital Guy <mailto:evangelist@apple.com>
Well, THAT'S annoying. I take the trouble to work up, trouble shoot and generally fine tune assorted AppleScript magics I use to run the script...and somehow managed to strip the posters e-mail address from each and every outgoing message for the past week.
Thanks to those people who noticed that it's really hard to respond to help requests without that email address, I was able to catch and fix the problem. Oh, and I *finally* managed to tweak the script to provide a qualified URL for the mailing address for all you fans of live links.

Thanks to all that have replied.
We are hoping to be up soon, so watch this space!
BTW, just for the record, I'm male, Digital Guy.

Date: Tue, 20 Oct 1998 08:06:32 -0700 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: Job - System Extension Software Writer
I need someone with an appropriate background in writing extension based shareware for the Mac and preferably some experience making the same piece of software run on Windows. (But Mac first!) Software writers that I have spoken to claim it would take less than 2 hours to write. It is a simple piece of software but I think you'll agree, it's just so necessary.
Pay is negotiable.
I'm not a company. This is a private project. If you are interested send me email immediately.

Date: Tue, 20 Oct 1998 08:06:33 -0700 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: Tidbit - On the Radio About Macs Vs. Windows
This tidbit is from:
A few hours ago as I was driving back home from school, a DJ on HITS 103.5 here in Toronto mentioned that the trailer for the movie Psycho was now on the internet. He then added, deadpan, "If you have a Microsoft computer, you're going to pull a knife on *yourself* trying to play it. I guess you can figure out that I have a big Macintosh at home." Or words to that effect...I thought it was a terrific "Mac Moment", especially since I'm a new convert to Macs (I used PCs for 5 long, terrible years) and still in my evangelistic phase...does it ever really go away? Guess not.

Date: Tue, 20 Oct 1998 08:06:39 -0700 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: PR - ProMaker Utils Version 1.1
This announcement is from:
Troi Automatisering is proud to announce the release of ProMaker Utils 1.1.
New in version 1.1
This version is compatible with Mac OS 8.5: All the themes and appearances are supported: - Multiple scroll bar arrows works fine - Hides Application switcher before starting to paste
What is ProMaker?
For those who don't know ProMaker yet: ProMaker is a FileMaker Pro productivity shareware tool for enhancing working with ScriptMaker. If you are a FileMaker Pro 3.0 or 4.0 user or developer and write ScriptMaker scripts this small application can save you a lot of time. ProMaker Utils makes it possible to paste an entire ScriptMaker script (all steps) from a TEXT file into a FileMaker Pro script. No more clicking until your hands hurt, just enter them in one go! Also works with almost all international FileMaker versions.
How does it work?
- - Open FileMaker Pro and the script you want to paste the steps in. - Use ProMaker Utils to open a TEXT file with the script steps in it (some sample text files are included). - Enter the complete script by pressing command-E.
ProMaker Utils will bring FileMaker to the front and start pasting the steps into the selected script. It is that simple.
ProMaker Utils is shareware ($25) and is now available for downloading at our Web site at:
