Date: Fri, 16 Oct 1998 12:13:52 -0700 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: Tidbit - Manx ComputerBus Hits the SuperHighway
This tidbit is from:
Greetings from the Isle of Man (the little island in the middle of the Irish Sea between England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales). We're probably best known as the home of the Tourist Trophy (TT) motorcycle races, the tailess Manx cat and the kipper (smoked herring).
Now, weíve a new claim to fame in the shape of Manx Telecomputer Bus!
This is a 36-foot-long single deck bus - stuffed with brand new G3 Macs, designed to bring the best Information Technology training, internet, email, video conferencing etc to all of the Islandís 40 schools!
As well as 20 (yes 20!) G3 minitowers, full ethernet and a big ëinteractiveí whiteboard linked to my Powerbook, the coolest thing about the bus (and what everyone first remarks upon when they hop aboard) is the superb Apple Studio Displays - chosen not only for their image quality and futuristic looks, but (for the bus) we also wanted their space and power saving features, as compared with regular CRTs.
We wanted to bring the same High School ëcomputer labí experience to our 40 or so primary schools, which don't yet have the number of machines or internet facilities the five big senior schools have. We came up with the idea of a mobile computer room, and what better to equip it with than the same Apple kit we have had so much success with at Secondary school level!
The bus was launched with due ceremony by main sponsors Manx Telecom (our local phone company) on September 11, and has been hard at work since.
The Isle of Manís schools have almost exclusively featured Apple equipment since our first Mac Pluses arrived in 1988. The decision to ëgo Macintoshí back in the late 1980s, has been central to our success with IT in schools across the Isle of Man. The Macís ease-of-use has meant that students have always been able to concentrate on producing great work, and IT staff have been able to get on with teaching students. (The machines and networks look after themselves.)
The Macs have been extremely cost-effective and excellent value for money. Their reliability and longevity has meant that almost every one weíve bought is still in use somewhere in the system!
Until seconded to Computer Bus in May, I ran the IT department at St.Ninianís High School, with around 160 Macs. They range from the ancient Mac Plus to the most modern G3s. (Our first iMacs arrive later this month.) All were and are supremely reliable, incredibly easy (and cheap) to maintain and network, and we used them for everything from word processing to digital music and full screen full motion video editing. (Oh, and we consistently got some of the best IT examination results in the UK!).
We even have our own fully-illustrated website where you can keep up with Computer Bus developments (and see those *20* super, flat, studio displays!):

Date: Fri, 16 Oct 1998 12:16:35 -0700 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: Tidbit - [The Business Mac] Certification - Why It Matters to You
This week The Business Mac will spend time focusing on technical certification programs and their benefits to businesses large and small. The are a variety of ways to certify technicians and consultants to ensure a certain level of competence. Apple currently has a limited program for hardware certification available for Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASP). In the past, Apple sponsored other technical certification programs that covered software and network competency. Apple abandoned these programs during the rough times 1-2 years ago. The question we should all be asking is "Is it time to bring those programs back?"

Date: Fri, 16 Oct 1998 12:16:41 -0700 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: PR - Redpoint Software Releases CapsOff V1.0
This announcement is from:
Redpoint Software is pleased to announce it's latest product "CapsOff".
CapsOff is a System Extension and Control Panel that disables the Capslock key on PowerPC based Macintosh computers.
Without CapsOff installed there can be annoying problems when the capslock key is hit by accident. You might type a whole stream of characters in capital letters. Or your password keeps getting refused because you are typing in upper case instead of mixed case.
With CapsOff installed hitting the CapsLock key will no longer be a problem. You can configure it to play a simple beep when the key is hit and then block the normal action of the CapsLock so that you still get lowercase letters instead of CAPITALS. At anytime you can enable and disable CapsOff by using a hotkey combination of your choosing.
For more information visit the CapsOff webpage or download the installer.

You can only actually _win_ the contest if you're Canadian, but don't let that stop you from letting Much how you rock with your *G3*.

Review of Transit v1.0 --- FTP Program for the Mac By John Farr
The first thing I noticed about Transit was its OS 8-friendly appearance. The default window configuration presents you with two boxes, "your stuff" and "their stuff." Uploading and downloading files is only a matter of drop-and-drag from one window to another. This application is Drag-and-Drop City, if you know what I mean.
Date: Fri, 16 Oct 1998 12:14:00 -0700 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: ?? - Program to Track Equipment Maintenance
This request is from:
Lately, my area is being bombarded by requests for vertical applications which seem to only have nasty Windoze solutions. This is making Macintosh difficult to maintain as the company standard as some users don't like the emulation option. Windoze computers simply will add headaches.
Our production department needs a program to track maintenance of equipment used in chocolate manufacturing. They are evaluating PMC for Windows, from DP Solutions Inc. currently. Does anyone know of a good Macintosh-based maintenance tracking system which could substitute for such Windoze solutions?
