Is the connection a Dial-up even iSDN, if so try doing a cancel after a few seconds once the line is up followed by another connect. I've seen this before and it could be a semi-bug (Is there such a thing as a semi-bug?), the second connect generally works or at least it does here but I am not using Wingate I am using a Netopia 640 with just 1474 open.
I find Mac TCP Watcher a good tool to see whats going on regarding ports opened etc
