Subject: Follow Up on Mac Radio Show coming to Atlanta, GA

This action item is from:

<tjones3@vanstar.com>

I posted a message on the Evangelist about 2 weeks ago announcing the
Radio Show here in Atlanta on WGST (640AM / 105.7FM) that I would be
doing a segment on. I just wanted to thank everyone who took the time to
e-mail and especially those of you that were able to listen to the show's
first outing last Saturday.

The volume of e-mail I have received has been almost overwhelming in both
it's volume and the support it shows the Mac community holds for such an
idea. And those of you who were able to listen to the show Saturday
morning know that the response we got from people calling in was
overwhelming as well. I apologize to everyone that I have not been able
to respond to personally via e-mail but I will endeavor to answer
everyone as 12 hour work days and family permit.

I have one last favor to ask of everyone out there (at least I will admit
the ulterior motive for this second posting). If everyone who was able to
listen to us here in Atlanta or world wide via the Internet would take
just a minute and let the show's host (Tom Caddoo) know that you liked
the show, or what you would like to see changed, but most importantly
just let him know that you support such an addition to his program on a
permanent basis.

Tom's address is <compshow@caddoo.net>

Please do not flame or spam Tom, he is a nice guy and deserves our thanks
for including Mac users in this great medium. But if he does not get any
response from the Mac community, a future for this forum on his show is
in jeopardy. If you have anything you would like to direct to me
personally, please feel free to e-mail me at any time at
<thjones@onramp.net> and I will try and answer you as soon as possible.
Again, thanks to everyone in the Mac community for your support, I think
we have a great road ahead together.

Subject: $$ - Great Canadian Scientists CD-ROM Offer

This special offer is from:

Brian McNett <webmaster@mycoinfo.com>

Barry Shell has written a wonderful educational Book/CD-ROM/Teacher's
Resource Guide combination, "Great Canadian Scientists." Unfortunately,
Barry's own website, <http://www.science.ca/>>, is on a university server
with restrictions against commercial use.

This is where my partners and I at Mycoinfo, "The World's First Mycology
E-Journal", <http://www.mycoinfo.com/> come in. We've dedicated a web
page to promoting Barry's book and CD-ROM (which can be purcahsed
seperately or together). As part of our arrangement with him, we're
extending a 10% discount to anyone who buys the whole package through our
site.

However, this alone simply isn't enough. Soo....

Purchase just the CD-ROM, but mention that you saw it here on the
EvangeList, and we'll stick your name in a hat for a drawing to receive
the limited-edition "Internet Mycology" T-shirt. Or buy any combination
of book, CD-ROM, or Teacher's Guide, and tell us to "Kick Butt" (but do
it in LATIN), and we'll knock 5% off your purchase. If you buy all three,
you're still eligible for our standard 10% discount, you can get the
additional 5% by following the above instructions, and have your name in
the drawing for the T-shirt as well!

A complete description of the "Great Canadian Scientists" package is
available at: <http://www.mycoinfo.com/GCanSci.html>>, along with pricing
in Canadian and U.S. currency. Even more detail can be found on Barry's
own website <http://www.science.ca/>.

Great Canadian Scientists was produced totally and entirely produced on
Macs with Macromedia Director and other tools.

Mycoinfo is a 100% Mac-produced site, served on a Macintosh, by two guys
with "Mac" in their names. We support the promotion of science education
in general, and mycology in particular.

Subject: ?? - Creating MPEG Movies

This request is from:

jonro, <jonro@gte.net>

Now that I have a CD-R drive, I would like to record movies to CD-R for
times I am traveling with my PowerBook. I assume this means performing
some type of MPEG compression into a QuickTime readable file. Does anyone
have any experience in doing this through either software and hardware?
My 7500 already has video inputs, so I'm at least part of the way there.
__________________________
Digital Guy Sez:

I can already hear people saying "Oh, this is EASY". I'm posting it
because, while it's obvious how to play MPEG files on a Mac, it's not so
obvious how to effectively capture and encode them.

Subject: Tidbit - Make the Mac Cooler Still

This tidbit is from:

Poste Internet, <skt7@club-internet.fr>

I thought I'd finally take this opportunity to present myself to the
Evangelistas. I am a professional graphic designer and Macmaniac. In my
spare time, I design Kaleidoscope Schemes (plug-ins), which I distribute
on my homepage, as freeware.

My schemes are generally well-liked by the scheme-designing community,
and I have had a lot of downloads from the Kaleidoscope Scheme Archive.
One of my schemes won a major prize in the Official Kaleidoscope
Contest. They are serious simple modernist designs, aimed at making your
Mac look a lot cooler, and a lot of care and attention has been put into
them. Your work experience will be significantly enhanced. Please take a
look at my K-page, and feel free to download as many as you like.
Platinum Appearance is cool, but it's just the beginning...

<http://www.imaginet.fr/~riczito>
follow the "mac" link, then the "screenshots" link.

For those of you who don't know what Kaleidoscope is, it is a shareware
control panel which, via plug-ins called "schemes", enables you to
totally change the look and feel of the Mac OS interface. Kaleidoscope
1.8.2 is available on: <http://www.kaleidoscope.net> PLEASE NOTE: You
will need it, to make my schemes work.

I have taken the liberty of writing to this list because I have *once
again* just spent two hours with a confirmed Windozer who couldn't stop
drooling over my Mac, marvelling at the cool interface, and the even
cooler ease of use, via drag & drop and so on. He is seriously
considering upgrading his PC soon....to a G3. If he does, he will be my
fifth convert! So far, one 3400/180, two 9600s and a G3. Does that make
me a bonafide Evangelist?

Fight the power.
The Mac will win through.

cheers,
RIC ZITO

Subject: ?? - Diabetes Record Software

This request is from:

Donna Dolezal Zelzer, <djz@efn.org>

A friend of mine on another mailing list recently sent this message
asking for help and I'm sending this here with her permission. She does
have FileMaker Pro 3.0, so a solution that uses FM would be good, as well
as other software.

Please send replies to her: winDone <circlelight@earthlink.net>

And thank you!

The problem:

- ----
I am required to keep records of all food intake, exercise and junk
pertaining to diabetes. I have been recording all this information in a
booklet or notebook and it is making me dizzy. Essentially, I must record
amount, type of food (exchange and that crud) calories, fat, protein,
carbs...yadda yadda and then what time of day, blood sugar readings and a
whole bunch of other stuff. I have to refer to several books, graphs,
charts, and 8x10 color glossies and it is time consuming and very very
hard to write this by hand.

Is there a data base program (she knows nothing of data base) or
something one might suggest for use on my Mac. This is driving me nuts.
Where is Quicken for Calories and Fats? hrm....any suggestions please.

Subject: PR - ClockSync II 1.2.1 Available

This announcement is from:

Jeremy Kezer, <jbkezer@kagi.com>

If you have two or more Macintoshes, you probably notice that the clocks
drift apart as time goes by. This can range from being a minor nuisance
to a problem, especially if you do a lot of synchronizing between the
Macintoshes. ClockSync II synchronizes the clocks between two or more
Macintoshes, by setting the clocks of the "Servant"Macintoshes to that of
a "Master" Macintosh.

ClockSync has two components. The ClockSync Master runs continuously on
the "Master" Macintosh, while the ClockSync Servant can be run on any
other Macintosh on the network to update its time.

All of my utilities can be registered through the Kagi shareware system.

Version 1.2.1 has the following enhancements:

- - Enhanced network error handling of Servant.

Shareware; $5 for a 3-user license with larger licenses available.

It can be downloaded from <http://www.kezer.net/shareware.html>.

*** Latest Versions Online ***

I personally post the latest versions of all my utilities in the places
listed below. In addition, these programs tend to spread very quickly,
and can often be found on other online services as well.

Subject: Job - Pre-Press/Graphic Artist (San Fernando Valley, CA)

This job announcement is from:

Richard Leonard, <triadgp@triadgp.com>

How many hats can you wear at one time? Can you stand starting a job,
stopping, jumping to something else, and then coming back to that first
job...etc. This is sometimes called...a dynamic environment; I usually
call it crazy. But I enjoy it, and am looking for someone to add to our
staff.

We are a small/med. size commercial printer (15 employees) . The work we
generate varies from corporate communication materials (i.e. business
cards, letterhead, etc.) to collateral material to books and directories.
We're more production oriented than cutting edge design. We use macs for
99% of the work (the only exception is when a client brings in a disc
created in some strange Wintel Application...and we invariably remake the
document on the Mac!)

You should have a thorough knowledge of Quark...and a working knowledge
of photoshop and illustrator, as well as pagemaker. An intuitive approach
to computers will certainly help. You will be taught to operate scitex
output devices and use the most current trapping software.

From: EvangeList <evangelist@apple.com>
Subject: PR - Birthdays and Such 1.2 Released

This announcement is from:

Ron Lichty, <RonLichty@aol.com>

Imagine. You turn on your Mac and a small window comes up telling you
about the important birthdays approaching in the next five or 10 days and
how old each of your friends and relatives will be; the anniversaries
coming up and how many years of marriage each represents; and the other
important dates in your life, be they bills coming due, recurring doctor
appointments to set up, or meetings to attend...

Automatic calculation of your friends' ages on their birthdays, and the
years they've been married on their anniversaries is new in Birthdays and
Such v. 1.2.

If you're not already using it, Birthdays and Such is a tiny Macintosh
application meant to be launched on daily startup (or left up if you
leave your Mac running) to remind you of the important birthdays and
anniversaries in your life. (Its only 17K, plus a sample Reminders text
file and a manual. It launches very fast and takes almost no RAM -- only
55K!)

Birthdays and Such is What'sItWorthWare--that is, you decide what
Birthdays and Such is worth. (If you use it, it's worth _something_.).

Birthdays and Such runs on almost every Macintosh computer that's been
made since 1986 -- Mac Plus through the latest PowerMacs. It requires
only System Software version 6, but takes advantage of System 7 features
when available.

You can download a copy of Birthdays and Such v.1.2 AOL: from the Mac
Utilities Forum (keyword: MUT), search the Software Libraries for
"RonLichty"
the Web: at <http://www.shareware.com>, search for "Birthdays-and-Such"

The steps to use it are simple: Modify the sample "Reminders" file with
your important dates. And set Birthdays and Such to run every time you
start your Macintosh.

Then every time you turn on your Mac, it starts up Birthdays and Such.
The program looks up the current date and scans the Reminders for
upcoming events. And voila, in the topmost window on your screen, it
displays just those--the ones you need to do something about.

(If you leave your Macintosh running for days at a time, that's ok, too:
Leave tiny Birthdays and Such running, and it will update to the next
day's reminders every night on the stroke of midnight.)

There've been over three thousand Birthdays and Such downloads from AOL
in the two years that it has been available. No telling how many from the
Internet or CompuServe, but the total is almost certainly over ten
thousand.

Thanks for supporting shareware!

Ron Lichty, author/programmer, Birthdays and Such <RonLichty@aol.com>
