Help, please... I recently came into possession (in the office) of a Laserwriter 16/600 PS and need to know how to reset the administrative password on the beast. I must reset that password so as to be able to set-up tcp/ip parameters, specifically the "default gateway". If this is not possible, then the printer, sadly, will become a $2000 (original cost) doorstop. Thanks in advance for assistance. Oh, I have already phoned 'tech-support'... and the outcome is obvious or I would not be writing here.

Date: Thu, 2 Apr 1998 14:17:46 -0000 From: EvangeList <evangelist@apple.com> Subject: Tidbit - PC Joystick Adaptor for Mac
Keyword: Market by market, Games
This tidbit is from:
Darren Doyle, <BigD@mail.utexas.edu>
This is for all of you who are tired of seeing two pathetic joysticks in the Mac section of a store right next to the jillion or so PC joysticks..... I found this awesome little box that hooks into your ADB chain. It allows you to use any PC, Nintendo 64, Playstation, Sega Genesis, or Atari 2600 joystick on your Mac!
Here's what's on the web page:
"Settings for games are incredibly easy to create and edit, using the powerful and easy-to-use software that comes with the ChoiceStick Mark V. All you have to do is hold down the user-definable hot-key while you're in the game for which you want to change the settings. The ChoiceStick Edit Window pops up, and you're ready to create new game settings or edit existing ones!
"Any button on any attached joystick can be easily configured to perform any mouse or keyboard activity imaginable.
"Each button can also be programmed to move the mouse in any direction (this is not limited to just the directional pad, either!), or generate any number of mouse clicks.
"Analog axes (like the X, Y on a PC gameport-compatible stick, or the analog joystick on a N64 controller) can be configured for mouse and keyboard emulation, to give you total control over your favorite flight sim and driving games. "
The best part is that it's only US$49.95! Definitely worth a look....

This tidbit is from:
John Palme <JLPalme@aol.com>
There is an interesting article in the Washington Post about Sandy Lerner, one of the cofounders of Cisco data systems. She was ousted from Cisco after it went public, and walked away with a nice golden parachute. She now spends her time pursuing many of her interests, including the following quote:
"On this afternoon, as on many, Lerner is holed up in her studio, mixing music. She has recorded an 18-member choir singing antiphonal music and she is surrounded by thousands and thousands of dollars' worth of sound machines - preamps, an analog-to-digital converter, an eight-track digital recorder. The whole shebang flows through a massive Macintosh computer."
It also noted that her email address is almost 23 years old. The entire article can be read at:
23 years. Whoa. And I thought i was doing good with an 8 year old address. :)

I came across a good article supporting the Macintosh in the news paper "La Presse", one of the 2 major news paper in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Since it is written in french, I though about all french speaking Evangelistas like me out there that may be interested to read a good article supporting the Macintosh in their native language.
In a completely unrelated aside, Warner Bros. is having special showings of a number of their classic films in celebration of their 75th anniversary, including "Casablanca". My wife, who has somehow managed to completely avoid seeing it until now, is going to be dragged to San Francisco this coming Tuesday (April 7) for the 7:00 PM showing. The only possible connection I can think of is the dueling anthems scene and "We'll always have Paris".
The application deadline for this previously posted job (see EvangeList #1136 for full description) has been extended 30 days. There have been very few applicants so chances are good.

Write a book, your name goes on the cover. Write a screenplay, your name goes on the poster. But when you write software, nobody knows your name. Imagine how you'd feel if you had written, say, ClarisWorks, or Photoshop, or RAM Doubler -- and yet you got even less billing than the screenwriter of Ernest Goes Shopping. You'd be hurt. You'd be outraged. You'd seek revenge.
In fact, you'd probably bury your name in the software itself: a movie, a photograph, a sound effect, or some other form of credits screen, accessible only by a secret combination of clicks and keystrokes. In other words, you'd create an Easter egg.
The latest Pogue book, "The Great Macintosh Easter Egg Hunt," reveals how to summon the 100 best Macintosh Easter eggs, including:
* The animated, text-box-blasting Quark alien * Photoshop's disgustingly gurgly belching cat * Conflict Catcher's Extension Invaders * Mac OS 8's melting crayons * Microsoft Word's "corrected" spelling for "sex" * The Macintosh Hall of Classic Greats (Easter eggs caught by the bosses and never released)
They're all here in a funny little book about the size of a CD. Available now for $10 from your local bookstore, or for $8 directly from:
Contrary to previous reports, the Iowa Newton Archives have not closed; rather, they've been moved to a new server. This FTP site has been re-established at the University of Rochester, where I have taken over the job of archive librarian.
The archives, renamed the Roundtable Newton Archives after their new host server, contain all of the files previously available from the University of Iowa's FTP site (newton.uiowa.edu), and are currently being expanded. They can be accessed via anonymous FTP from ftp.cif.rochester.edu, where they are stored in the /pub/newton/ subdirectory. Alternately, the archives have a new Web page, which can be reached at
Any questions regarding the archives should be directed to me, Michael Tashbook, at <samurai@cif.rochester.edu> or <newton@cif.rochester.edu>. Any submissions should be placed in the /incoming/ subdirectory of the archives, and I'd appreciate a note to let me know that there's something new there.
Thank you,
Michael Tashbook Librarian, Roundtable Newton Archives <samurai@cif.rochester.edu>

Well, that's what the little voice tells _me_, at least! Seems that there are plenty of fans of GoLive CyberStudio out there, "even though" it's a piece of Mac-only software. HotFlash had this little Chunk 'O Love in today's issue-- it leads to a Webmonkey product review, which will be posted Tuesday, March 31... I can't wait to read it!
- ---
When we posted our WYSIWYG editor shoot-out a few weeks ago that compared lots of leading drag-and-drop HTML editors, we neglected to write up GoLive CyberStudio because it's Macintosh-only. After receiving volumes of email from CyberStudio fanatics, we decided to check it out and found that the thing pretty much kicks butt. Coming Tuesday.
"Kicks butt"? A coincidental choice of words? Hah! I think NOT! I know there are a lot of EvangeListas who use this product, and who stumped for this review, so congrats!
(BTW-- I don't even use CyberStudio, but I might after the review... And as always, I'm not affiliated with _anyone_ ... except EvangeList!)
