oriented and able to manage multiple projects.

Sorry, at this time, due to the nature of the work telecomuting is not an
option. You must be from the area and able to work on site using our G3

Subject: Followup - Help with Bayer File Format

This follow-up message is from:

george k diversiev, <gdiver1@uic.edu>

I must thank you for all of the responses I received, especially those
from people at Kodak which in the end solved my problem, eventhough I
must use a PC to do it.

I won't go into details about the file format and how it is used in high
speed digital video; it is a special dithering pattern as well as a file
format and as one evangelista reminded me(TGOO--thank god only one!) it
is also a aspirin brand.... there are a number of resources here however
that were helpful and informative: (Special thanks to Ben Holland)

<http://www.imagemill-tech.com/Mamodule.htm#Camsup>

<http://www.graftek.fr/Vema.htm>

<http://www.gtk.com/>

The above links provide a bunch of great info on not only products but
some of the technical info regarding this strange file format that must
be used with high speed digital video or else.

Additionally, thanks to those that offered snippets of technical info
that made this more than a goose chase.

A number of you mentioned using Graphics Converter, a neat program and
IMHO, an economical photoshop. However, it couldn't translate my image.
Also, folks mentioned using Debabelizer, which I am sure also does a good
job at image conversion but could not accomodate my strange file type.

I even got a response from Image Alchemy, a very cool company that can do
image conversion via the web, (totally cool), but as my problem was
solved, time really didn't allow me to pursue this avenue.

In the end, the solution was a piece of software written by R.K. Martin?
called PCcolor. It's a wintel app (they're good for some things) that
allows conversion from Bayers to Tiffs, without using the processor that
the camera uses, therefore, I can downloads *.bays to my harddrive on my
harddrive, disconnect the camera and take some more pictures while the
other computer works; not too shabby. Other than that, the app is very
feature barren, it does one thing, and one thing well. More importantly,
since the camera was a significant investment on the part of the
university, Kodak was obligated to support us in this respect. Thanks
Kodak!

Again, thank you all for the responses and if anyone has any more
questions or comments, please feel free to email me, I have kept a file
of the emails this thread has generated.

The Macintosh community never ceases to amaze me.

Subject: ?? - FDDI solutions for G3 PowerMacs

This request is from:

Karsten Krueger, <k.krueger@psp.net>

I am working for Xerox. One of my clients, a larger newspaper, is
currently upgrading their network to copper based FDDI on workgroup level
and a fiber optic FDDI backbone. They have to move 15 GB in one hour for
their ctp machines, 100baseT is too slow.

Their system admin asked me wether I know a way to get their 50++ Macs
into their FDDI net. Their Apple dealer was not able to do so. Otherwise
they will drop Macs and replace them with Dell systems.

No problem, I thought. Just look at Farallon, Dayna, Asante, Evangelist,
Apple TIL (Techn. Info Lib.) on the web and you have a bunch of
solutions. WRONG ! The most recent info on FDDI for Mac was the initial
public anouncement of Open Transport 1.0 where they anounced FDDI
support. No news in 1997 nor 1998. No solution, no nothing.

If you know about an up to date FDDI solution supporting G3 PowerMacs and
Mac OS 8.1 for both copper and fibre glass installations please let me
know and you gonna save 50++ Macs.

Subject: ?? - A Source For Switcher

This request is from:

Grant [In The Details] Hutchinson, <g.hutchinson@shaw.wave.ca>

OK, now for a blast from the past.

I am working on setting up a retro Mac workstation. It will be basically
a Mac Plus running System 3.2 or 4.1, MacWrite 1.1 and an reasonably
early incarnation of MacPaint. But here's the kicker... I am also dearly
wanting to install that infamous utility called Switcher, the precursor
to MultiFinder.

Does anyone have a source for this old "sliding screen" application
switch software? Please say yes. Any information will be greatly
appreciated.

Why am I doing this? Because it can be done.

Digital Guy Sez:

Oh wow, Switcher...I remember installing it after slapping in that Dove 4
Mb upgrade (around 1500.00 US for 4 Mb!) in 1987 (and sweated bullets
that very first time I cracked open a Mac). I think (if I recall
correctly) it was written by Andy Hertzfield (? I think he did, at least)
to allow people to use that "massive" 1 Mb of RAM more efficiently.

Subject: Followup - Casting for the Apple Miniseries

This follow-up message is from:

The Digital Guy <mailto:evangelist@apple.com>

I know better than to make off-the-cuff comments on this list. So why was
I so surprised at the number of responses to my musing as to who would be
cast to play the key roles of the rumored Tom Hanks HBO mini-series about
Apple?

What was really fun was how a lot of you were amazingly consistent as to
who you would pick. In no particular order, here are some of my faves:

Steve Jobs: Tom Cruise got quite a few votes, although a close second was
"Steve Jobs". :)

The Woz: Richard Dreyfuss was mentioned a lot, though I think people are
biased because he's been narrating Apple's commercials. I got one oddball
who suggested "that guy who plays Aries on 'Xena: Warrior Princess'".

Gil Amelio: Bob Newheart. Hmmmmm...

Mike Spindler: Surprisingly, only one vote came in, and that was for John
Goodman. I thought that a weird choice, until I thought about it. Tweak
his hair and coach him on the accent, and Goodman could turn in an Emmy
award winning performance. :)

John Sculley: William Hurt. Must be the nose. :)

Also it was pointed out that I had left an obvious character off the list
- -- who would play Bill Gates? Rick Moranis, of course. Could be a
breakout performance for him. :)

Oh, and one individual made my day by asking who would play ME. I'm
sorry, while the EvangeList is an important part of Apple's history, I
don't think that I would warrant anything more than the briefest of
walk-ons (if that!). But if they did, and if my busy schedule prevented
me from participating (smirk) I would have to cast Chris Elliot. ;-)

Oh, and the overwhelming choice to play Guy (other than Guy himself :)
was -- Jackie Chan. That certainly gives the phrase "Kick Butt!" a whole
new meaning. :)

Subject: Tidbit - Pro-Mac Commentary on NPR

This announcement is from:

Tom Caswelch, <mrmacmom@pacific.net.sg>

The June 14, 1998 edition of NPR's Weekend Edition Sunday program, which
can be found currently on the web at:

<http://www.npr.org/programs/wesun/archives/1998/current.html>

After the 20th, follow the links to the archives from:

<http://www.npr.org/programs/wesun/>

It Contains a commentary on "Cheap PC's" by Weekend Edition Information
Age Specialist Rich Dean. The tag line is about "under $1,000" computers,
and halfway into listening to it I was composing a letter to let Rich and
his listeners know that there is now an alternative to the Wintel
offerings that he was enumerating. Then, however, the rest of his
commentary had my jaw bouncing off of the spacebar on my keyboard.
Suffice it to say that not only is Rich (and now, NPR's national
audience) aware of the iMac... well, you've got to hear this one for
yourselves, but the bottom line is that he recommends buying an iMac for
all the right reasons. It's one of the most intelligently pro-Mac
articles I've ever run across in the mainstream press. I'm still going to
write his editors a letter ( <mailto:wesun@npr.org> ), but the tenor of
my response has certainly changed. This is one reporter who really did
his homework and deserves to hear from the Mac community.
