Subject: PR - Kagi Email Processor for Mac

This announcement is from:

Public Access Software, <pasoft@pasoftware.com>

Public Access Software today released its "Kagi Email Processor System"
version 1.0. The Kagi Email Processor is an extensible system to
automatically handle payment processed emails inside of Claris Emailer
2.0 from the Kagi Payment service.

The Kagi Email Processor System accepts up to four different "plugin"
files at one time to handle a variety of functions. Included with the
System are two plugins capable of inserting a bounty of email message
information into the included FileMaker Pro Database file.

The two different plugins offer compatibility with version 3.0 and 4.0 of
the FileMaker Pro application which is not included.

Because the System is plugin-extensible it can be fully customized to
meet the needs of vendors using the Kagi Payment Processing service. A
sample plugin file is included to allow third-parties to make their own
plugins as needed without the assistance of Public Access Software.

System Requirements:

- - Macintosh with System 7.x or newer
- - AppleScript 1.1 or newer
- - Claris Emailer 2.0.x
- - FileMaker Pro 3.0 or 4.0 to use the included plugins and Database file

Price:

- - Complete System including FileMaker Pro 3.0/4.0 Database and two
plugins is $95 US.
- - Custom plugins can be developed by Public Access Software for $35 US ea.

Subject: PR - Mini Conversion 1.0

This announcement is from:

Tom Riley, <tjriley@btinternet.com>

Announcing the first public release of Mini Conversion. A small utility
for converting the type and creator codes of multiple files, or for
making file invisible, stationery or name locked. Mini Conversion
presents the user with multiple windows (pads) onto which files can be
dropped and changed. No need to fiddle with ResEdit!

Being only 16 years of age I'm not in this for the money; I'm in it for
the love of programming on the Mac, so I can announce a low registration
price for at least a month after you read this message of just $5!
That gives you free updates and email tech support for life and probably
other free stuff when I release it.

Mini Conversion can be downloaded from <http://members.xoom.com/tsha/tom/>

Thanks,

Subject: ?? - Equivalent to Electric Image for the Mac

This request is from:

Kevin Quosig, <ids@quosig.com>

I work as the Administrator for all the Macintosh equipment at work,
including an AppleShare IP server. For a while now, we have been
producing PageMaker files on the Mac for use in a mail-merge system.

The way it works now, is that the letter/flyer is created in Mac
PageMaker 6.01 (we tried Word, but it isn't flexible enough layout-wise),
brought down to a Windows 95 maching running PageMaker, which then prints
the "master" information to a program called "Electric Image" (or so I am
told, the name may be off a bit).

Electric Image, for those who don't know, "caches" the print job as a PCL
template which one can then add individualized database information to
(in our case, name and address fields), similar to a mail-merge.

So, the PageMaker file is run to Electric Image, and then the database
information is merged and printed on some high-speed HPs....thousands of
addresses per run.

The solution is annoying, but no mail-merge features existed in
PageMaker, no PageMaker plugins filled this void at the time, and there
did not seem to be an Electric Image-style program on the Mac (it's the
only program of its kind on the PC that we know of, by a small home-grown
company). So, we are stuck with the cludge--but I am in a position now to
"fix" this if possible.

Basically, we would like to have the ability to merge-print with Mac
PageMaker files from a PC-supplied database file (format is flexible,
probably tab or comma delimited text files, or dBase files).

Keeping it all-Mac would simplify our network administration and
streamline the process (font issues and having to convert Mac graphics to
wierd PC formats has always annoyed us to no end, since Electric Image
uses PCL and the artists use PostScript).

I hope Mac Managers or the Evangelistas can come to my rescue in
short-order, my "Window of Opportunity" is relatively short.

marches on with two new additions.

the iMac channel <http://www.mactimes.com/imac/> is dedicated to that
swoopy new computer you can't even buy yet, the incredible, futuristic
iMac.

In "iMac and the Two Button Mouse" on Thinking Different

Subject: Tidbit - New Email Lists for Mac Users

This tidbit is from:

Dan Knight, <dknight@mail.iserv.net>

Low End Mac is pleased to announce several new email lists.

Three lists are spin-off from the popular Quadlist, which was originally
intended for users of 68040-based Macs. The list has diverged greatly,
covering topics as diverse as compact Macs, G3s, Duos, clones,
networking, monitor repair, upgrades, and more.

To help bring focus and better serve the needs of subscribers, Quadlist
now has three daughters: Vintage Macs, PowerBooks, and Power Macs.

Vintage Macs covers primarily the 68000, 68020, and 68030-based Macs.
<http://www.mactimes.com/lowend/vintage/>

PowerBooks covers primarily the portable Mac OS computers.
<http://www.mactimes.com/lowend/powerbooks/>

Power Macs covers primarily the PPC-based Mac OS computers.
<http://www.mactimes.com/lowend/powermacs/>

Quadlist covers primarily 68040-based Macs.
<http://www.mactimes.com/lowend/quadlist/>

And, especially for those buying "fire sale" Umax SuperMac computers (and
all those who beat us to the punch), SuperMacs will be geared primarily
to the needs of SuperMac users.
<http://www.mactimes.com/lowend/supermacs/>

Together these are known as the Low End Mac family of email lists. I
expect each will ramble into other territory as well, as is the case with
users working with a variety of Macs. I hope each will become the kind of
community Quadlisters have grown to love.

Subject: Tidbit - Macs at the Pacific Science Center

Keyword: Advocacy, Why Macs Are Better

This tidbit is from:

Doug Hinschberger, <hinsch@gte.net>

From the April 1998 issue of Puget Sound Computer User highlighting the
use of computers at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle, WA:

"Basically, our criteria for keeping a computer, rather than retiring it,
are that the Macintoshes must be able to run at least Microsoft Word 5.1
and QuickMail 3.5, and the PCs must be able to run Windows 95.
Unfortunately, this means we had to replace almost all of our PCs after
two years of use. Our Macintoshes have lasted almost three times that
long, on average," reports DeMaria.

The Science Center's primary weather data server runs on a Mac IIci - a
model from 1989.
