I would like to take a moment to let you know that I have added several new tutorials onto my web site. These tutorials cover a wide range of topics including Claris Emailer, URL Manager Pro, HFS+, MacsBug and many others. There are now 30 tutorials found on the web site and more will be added in the near future. I believe that my site is now one of the largest Macintosh tutorial sites on the web. In fact, one of my recent tutorials covering HFS+ was recently published in the Australian based magazine Design Graphics. My site can be found at:

This announcement is from:
<sales@neuronsys.com>
Neuron Data Systems announces the availability of release 2.0b3 of MacCoach, a combination of hardware and software that reboots a Macintosh after the operating system stalls.
The new release has the following additional features:
1. Built in application monitoring.
Without the need for external support from the applications being monitored, MacCoach now keeps track of the infamous "Application unexpectedly quit" problems. With Application Crash Detection enabled, MacCoach can now restart the system upon an application crash. The user has the choice between "Finder Restart" and "Direct Restart". The Finder Restart instructs the finder to restart the system just as if the user had selected "Restart" from the "Special" menu. A direct restart closes all open files, flushes and unmounts all volumes and restarts the machine.
2. Comprehensive logging of activities and problems.
With the new release, MacCoach is turned into a valuable system management tool by logging all relevant activities such as System Startups and Shutdowns, Application Launches, Quits, forced Quits and Unexpectedly Quits.
3. HTML based reporting.
The MacCoach System Log can be converted to HTML format. The HTML report is updated periodically if new entries become available in the system log.
The new release is a software only update and works with all existing MacCoach hardware.
You are welcome to visit our web site <http://www.neuronsys.com> to download the beta release free of charge. We expect to publish the final version in the near future.
Please note that this is beta quality software and should be treated as such. MacCoach is tested to comply with both CE and FCC rules and regulations.
Neuron Data Systems aims at providing world class solutions in hardware and software. Our employees and staff have a long and outstanding track record in the development and marketing of innovative and reliable solutions.

Dave's not here, <dave.solko@uc.edu>
Today, my boss, jealous of the fact that I have a websharing and netpresenz on my machine, decided that he would bring his Windows machine up to my Mac. In his words, it would be even better, because personal web server has FTP included, and he wouldn't have to download and install two apps. According to him, since Apple can't do anything right, he wasn't surprised they didn't include an FTP server in their webserver.
So, off he went to Microsoft's website to download and install Personal webserver. (He used to have Personal Web Server installed on his machine, but that was a couple of intalls of '95 ago -- It blows up every couple of months.) He launched Netscape and when he got to the Personal Webserver site, he was told he couldn't download Personal Webserver because he wasn't running IE 4.01. So he downloaded IE 4.01 and downloaded the installer so he could install IE. He then went back to Microsoft's site, found Personal Webserver, downloaded it and another installer so he could install Personal Webserver -- someday, Microsoft will figure out how to make an application which installs *all* its products.
He then installed and configured Personal Webserver in about an hour -- which to Microsoft's credit is *Much* easier than trying to install IIS. But, much to his dismay, Microsoft has removed FTP services from Personal Webserver 4.
After much swearing, off he went to Shareware.com, found wftp and downloaded and installed it. So, after a morning spent downloading and installing five apps: a browser he didn't want a webserver, two installers and an FTP server, he now has the same services it took me about 5 minutes to install and configure on my Mac, and one of them came with my system.

Leptonic Systems introduces SurfJet Agent(tm), an application that automatically finds articles on the Internet that are "interesting" to you. It locates and pre-reads candidate articles to estimate your interest, then shows you the best. Using neural network techniques, it maintains an interest profile, learns from your feedback, and can actually improve its performance over time.
SurfJet Agent will be demonstrated at MacWorld Expo - The Creative World, in New York City at the Javits Center, July 8-10, 1998 in booth #2030.
A time-limited preview version of SurfJet Agent is available for download from the Leptonic Systems web site. The commercial release of SurfJet Agent is expected later in 1998.
For more information, please visit the SurfJet Agent page at the Leptonic Systems' web site:

Mike Pickard <mpick@interaccess.com>
I'm an accidental author. The letters I wrote to my daughter when she was at overnight camp for four summers in a row accumulated into a tower of prose so large, I had to turn it into a book.
"The Gerfnit Chronicles" is a science fiction story for readers age 12 and up. Grown-ups like the story as much as kids. But the story never would have gotten written without Apple's technology.
The text was created on several desktop and portable Macintoshes over a five year period. The second part of the book was mostly handwritten on an original Newton Messagepad while my wife and I vacationed in western Canada. The illustrations are a combination of canned third party clip art and original photos taken with a Quicktake 200 and modified with Photoshop.
My author page <http://www.xlibris.com/mikepickard.html> provides testimony to my dependence on Apple platforms. The book itself includes several humerous situations involving the use of computing technology by Earthlings and aliens. Of course, a Macintosh is always the choice for getting things done. In the spirit of Macintosh, there's an Easter Egg in the story!
Check out the book page at:

Last month Little Blue, the office budgie that lives in a Mac SE and is live on an internet petcam 24 hrs. a day was mentioned in the Evangelist. What followed caught everyone here by surprise.
Of course we were hit very hard by Evangelistas (thanks!). Along the way it was picked up by several other groups including Mac Fan Magazine (Japan) which will include a picture and short story in their July issue. Within a few weeks we had registered over 7000 hits.
At first the software didn't hold up well and it became a full time job just to keep the cam from hanging until I could get new software and a new system together. I won't get into the technical details here but I've posted them on Little Blue's Home Page:
<http://www.badgirl.co.jp/blue/>
For all those interested in making a similar page, you'll find not only the sordid details, but as well you can download an AppleScript that will make your server 'speak' to you and give a thank you reply to the sender everytime someone sends a message. This AppleScript is very cool and was written by Tim Exley in response to the problems I was having at the time.
As well, Little Blue's Home Page has been expanded to not only include email and a message board, but as well it now has a section where you may send scanned images and/or stories about your own pet, and another page that is a *sniff sniff* Pet Cemetary.
Another 'side-effect' was my boss' response to the whole affair. It really got his attention in a big way and he now proudly uses the Little Blue Home Page as an example in his presentations and speeches about the Internet. As well, since he's seen how easy and reliable it is to set up a Mac as a server, he's actually talking about replacing his Wintel machine with a Mac. I enthusiastically told him that if he did it would be possible to run Virtual PC so he could keep his Win95 and his response was "What's the point? Everything that needs to be done can be done on a Mac." I can't tell you how that shocked everyone in the office!
Thanks Evangelistas!
