Over here in Glasgow, Scotland we have just started to get the iMac advertising and it seems that AppleUK is doing a pretty good job of it. However, in the early hours of Friday 4th one of the city centre banks was subject to an armed robbery. When the security came to deposit some money (in one of those armoured vans) they disturbed them and the bank robbers ran. But one of the security guys didn't know they were away and decided to lock himself in an office, leaving the police to think that he was being held hostage! For 7 hours they had trained negotiators talking to no-one; while traffic was diverted around the scene. This diversion meant that for most of Friday all cars travelling in or out of Glasgow had to pass by a massive iMac advert!
It seems that AppleUK picked thier spots well, leaving the police to divert everyone around towards it while their armed police unit charged an empty building.
Thank you, Strathclyde Police. __________________________ Digital Guy Sez:

A friend who does some occasional word processing for me bought a new iMac to replace her old SE. She had two issues: fear of establishing a first-time Internet hookup, aggravated by reading about some iMac users' difficulties connecting to providers other than Earthlink (she wanted Mindspring, but had never used any ISP); and the need to get Word 5.1a from her old machine onto her iMac. Used to 5.1a, she had no interest in any newer version of Word which might have been available on a CD.
I still don't know what the "non-Earthlink ISP connection problem" is, frankly, since it took all of two totally uneventful minutes to get her connected to Mindspring once her iMac and her Mindspring new-user's connection kit got onto my dining room table.
The problem with copying Word was more of a stumper, at first. There seemed to be no easy way to get her old copy of Word 5.1a off her freestanding SE and into her new iMac, which of course has no floppy and no way at present to use a Zip disk. We didn't have an Ethernet network handy, and her SE has no Ethernet card anyhow. I was contemplating some very unattractive alternatives (like ftp'ing the diskette images necessary to install 5.1a up, then down again), when it dawned on me: my wife has a Powerbook 3400c with an installed Word 5.1a. And both the 3400c and the iMac have infrared sensors. I'd never used Infrared before, and had no documentation on how to configure or use it, but what the heck? It's a Mac, right? And no self-respecting Mac user needs documentation, right?
After fiddling with the Infrared, TCP/IP, and Appletalk control panels for less than five minutes -- joy! Her iMac's screen displayed a message that the iMac had sensed the presence of an IrDA sender in the vicinity. From that point on, it was nothing but the Chooser, Sharing Setup, and time-honored methods of mounting a server onto the 3400c's desktop. Drag the 5.1a folder onto the iMac's drive icon, and -- voila!
The surprise was the speed, which seemed far faster than AppleTalk over PhoneNets. The entire Word 5.1a folder (a full install) moved from my wife's 3400c to my friend's iMac in less than a minute.
It was so much fun I went ahead and dragged over a copy of Tex-Edit Plus, too.

This tidbit is from:
ClearBox, <clearbox@mindspring.com>
Just wanted to write you a quick note, and say that the Macintosh Evangelista iMac demo days has been a brilliant idea! I cannot express to you how thankful people were to receive information about the iMac and Macintosh in general.
I volunteered this weekend (Saturday - 9/5/98) for the morning shift at the CompUSA in Atlanta, GA (Lenox Square Mall area). I was running a bit late, and did not arrive until 11 am, but was not worried since I knew one other evangelista was going to be there to help out.
Unfortunately, when I arrived, I found out the other evangelista did not show. So, I took it upon myself to run things. I started up all the Macs in the Apple Store area, and ran the installed demo software. Cleaned up the shelves, straightened up the software boxes, and placed Apple advertising material on display.
Before I knew it, the first people were rolling in to check out the iMac. I approached them, asked them questions, and spoke to them about the iMac. A lot of people started gathering around the iMac when I played the "Simplicity Shootout" quicktime movie which is part of the iMac demo.
One lady said that the "Simplicity Shootout" was really great marketing. She was so impressed that she almost compared it to guerilla tactics. People loved this ad! I think I played it about 30 times yesterday!
I sold a total of 5 iMacs, 1 G3 PowerMac (tower), 2 Epson Printers, 1 Epson USB printer adapter, 1 Joystick, 1 Zip Drive, 1 10pack of Zip Disks, and 5 Software titles. I could have sold more Printer adapters, and software (MS Office 98 for Mac) if CompUSA wouldn't have run out of these items.
All in all I have had a very good day! So much in fact, that I did not leave the store until 7 pm! The greatest part was meeting people that love the Mac, they were genuinely thankful for the assistance I was able to provide. Each and everyone of them shook my hand before they left!
Now, just imagine what a difference we can make if Apple had quality people like us staffing the Apple store every weekend...

This tidbit is from:
Kurt, <kurt@otown.com>
If you're like me, you're tired of "checking back" with Symantec to see when the HFS+ ready version of Norton's Utilities for Macintosh will be ready.
I wrote to Symantec customer service to ask they set up a mailing list of people who want to be notified when the update is ready. Their response was to suggest I write another suggestion.
If you're tired of "checking back" with Symantec, leave your e-mail address at <http://www.otown.com/symantec> and I'll notify you when the update comes out.

Date: Tue, 15 Sep 1998 08:06:23 -0800 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: Followup - 128kbs Internet Access Over Standard Telephone Lines
This follow-up is from:
Chris Guest <chris@peyton-guest.prestel.co.uk>
The day my posting appeared on the list regarding 128kbs access to the internet (EvangelistDigest VI # 1268), BT sent me details on pricing.
The anticipated promise of cheap high speed access over standard telephone lines looks to be another false dawn, however. Although the hardware required for access to BT Highway looks as though it will be within reach of home users, the monthly charges are (quote):
Option 1 Conversion 116.33 Line Rental 40 per month Call Allowance 15 per month Net Cost 25 per month if you make 15 worth of calls
Option 2 Conversion 175.08 Line Rental 27 per month
Given that proper ISDN installation is only 99, and that home users already have lines installed the cost of 'conversion' to 128kbs access appears insidious.
However, many thanks to 'listas from Canada, the USA and the the UK for providing feedback on the original posting. Generally, the view is that BT Highway's 'ISDN2' technology has arrived too late in the wake of cable modems and something called ADSL which is reportedly being trialled by BT. The most interesting feedback, though, was from Brian Crockett <bcrocket@nt.com>:>
"Nortel has a new technology called 1 Meg Modem. As you can guess this gives you 1,000Kbs (compared to 128Kbs ISDN) access to the internet. Like ISDN this works over regular phone lines but unlike ISDN it does not require an expensive adapter for every phone in your house. It doesn't interfere with your regular phones in any way. You just need a special modem that is expected to sell for $200 - $300 U.S. Since it strips off your data before it gets to the phone network it's much cheaper for your phone company to deploy. ISDN goes through the phone network to your ISP using up two expensive phone channels. This means 1 Meg Modem rates should be cheaper than ISDN".
Brian says his company has already taken $1bn worth of orders for the modem!
