This tidbit is from:
Jo Herter, <jrherter@mailbox.syr.edu>
I am the sound designer at a LORT theater in Syracuse, NY. The building I work in is overrun with Wintel machines (although the artistic director and a few stage managers work on Macs). I have been pushing a proposal to get Pro Tools 24 and a G3, to bring the theater to the digital world of editing. So far the proposal is a part of short long range planning (2-3 years). The computer I was given to work on was an IBM 286. I could only fit Windows and Word on the drive.
I have a 660 AV at home and have used Macs for years. I had always wanted to make a Macquarium, and recently found an SE for 5$. Just for grins, I plugged it in with my keyboard and mouse. Up popped my smiling Mac Image. I puchased an inexpensive keyboard and mouse then loaded all the RAM I could in (4MG). I put a word processor, data base, spreadsheet, sailing simulater, connected a modem and named the hard drive aquarium. After a year of my supervisor complaining about not having E-Mail in my office (the IS folks said the IBM could not deal with a modem), I'm up and running. Also prepping the office for when the G3 (or latest model) is integrated. The interisting thing is that memory wise the IBM and the SE have the same configuration.
Now my problem is I have to find another $ 5 Mac for my aquarium.

This tidbit is from:
<shawn@ttalk.com>
The boys have picked their new name, The Mac Show, and their new logo, done up by Brad Strickland and Chuck Maddox.
And in celebration, they've kicked off the ""Pick Your Prize!" Contest!
The *very* kind folks at MacLink.Net <http://www.maclink.net>, The *coolest* ISP on the planet, have given the boys an iMac. After thanking them profusely, the guys were finally made to understand they have to *give* the iMac away.
After much tears and beating of chests, the guys came up with the greatest idea they've had in a long time. Not only will they give away the iMac, but they will give away *thousands* of dollars of other prizes too!
Get all the details at <http://www.ttalk.com/macshow> and good luck!
The guys are still offering the daily "Mac Minute" to anyone who wants to put it on their site! Go to The Mac Show Home Page, grab the **NEW** logo and link it to the same RealAudio file. Then, folks can listen to it without even leaving your site.
The boys are doing this out of the goodness of their hearts. They are not asking for a link back or anything else. Just their little way of saying thanks to the Mac Community. Aren't they swell?

This follow-up message is from:
Peter Milburn, <elite.systems@shaw.wave.ca>
I have some good news to report regarding my last post. As some of you may know I was previously not able to access my bank's new Java online banking services using the Macintosh. Thanks to the diligence of the Online Banking Manager and his willingness to listen to my feedback, Mac users who use Internet Explorer 4.01 with the Microsoft JVM enabled are now able to successfully log onto their accounts. The manager has also asked me to test Apple's MRJ version 2.1 when the final candidate is released.
The moral of the story for situations like this is to keep your head cool and make a rational case for your Macintosh support appeals. Don't forget that many people in administrative positions are not technically astute and market-wise, so they could probably use your reasoned input to take some sort of action.
Thanks to all of the over 80 Evangelistas who replied to my initial post!

This tidbit is from:
Kyle Wheeler, <kw837498@oak.cats.ohiou.edu>
For anyone who owns one of the wonderful G3 minitowers that came with an IX3D Graphics Accellerator Card, I have good news. Going to the IXMicro website (www.ixmicro.com), and downloading the latest drivers provides an incredible increase in speed. (I used to think that my card was slower than the built-in ATI display, but with the new drivers, it blows the ATI away.) I believe that Apple pre-installed the ix3D Ultimate Rez card (those are the drivers that work on mine).
P.S. Have fun in Quake after this quick download!

This request is from:
<CathiX@aol.com>
A well known author of science fiction has carpal tunnel syndrome. He is also a very devout Mac user. He is looking for some dictation software for Macintosh. He knows of "NATURALLY SPEAKING" from Dragon Systems but it only works on Windows. "POWER SECRETARY" for Mac is an older Dictation package but he worries if it is good enough.
1. Do any of you know of any really great dictation software for Mac that a professional author can use? (He uses WordPerfect/Mac as his main word processor)
2. Is "Power Secretary" as good as "Naturally Speaking"?
I cannot get anyone from Dragon Systems to give me an answer.

Dunno if anyone else has noticed, but Team Evangelista is still number one in the RC5-64 contest. Even more impressive, our overall keyrate is higher than the number 2 & 3 teams combined!
On an interesting note, the "team history plot" shows a sharp increase (from roughly 250,000 per day to roughly 330,000 per day) right around the middle of August. Can you say, "Thanks, iMac!" __________________________ Digital Guy Sez:
Okay, I admit it...I hadn't considered the impact that the iMac could have on this contest. Even if a percentage point or two of all the iMacs decided to join the effort... all those 233 Mhz G3's...whoa.

MGL interviews Eric Lengyel of Yosemite Entertainment:
Recently, Mac Gamer's Ledge (www.macledge.com) asked the Lead Software Engineer for the Quest for Glory V: Dragon Fire project, Eric Lengyel, for an interview. Eric was kind enough to answer each question in great detail, touching on subjects like 3D hardware in future games, future Mac games from Sierra/Yosemite, his thoughts on iMac and Apple's help offered to game developers, info on QFG5's development, and much more. The interview can be found at:
My daughters want to go out on Halloween as an iMac (for the 11 year old) and the iMac mouse (for the 7 year old). Does anyone have a suitable "pattern" my wife can follow to create such items out of fabric? Anyother suggestions? __________________________ Digital Guy Sez:
Egads! Thgis would be SO COOL if some sewing inclined EvangeLista could cook this up, especially if they could post it to a website. Can you imagine all those wobbling iMacs wandering around doing the trick or treat thing?

Keyword: Becoming an AppleDeveloper
This tidbit is from:
Henry Carstens, <carstens@verticalsolutions.com>
We've added a new Windows-to-Macintosh Porting Reference to our website <http://www.verticalsolutions.com> that may be useful to developers wanting to port their Windows applications to the Mac.
In the Porting Reference we try to provide Windows developers with enough tools and information to make a porting decision and with enough information to jump-start a Macintosh marketing program.
The most eye-opening thing in the Reference, however, is a calculator that estimates the potential Mac sales for a Windows product:
<http://www.verticalsolutions.com/market.htm>
The Porting Reference includes:
- - An overview of available porting tools and how we use them - - Time estimates for completing the port relative to original development - - A primer on Macintosh marketing, - - Relative costs of Macintosh marketing, - - Market research, - - Marketing links to research, distributors, resellers, publications and web sites, and - - A calculator that estimates a Mac product's sales based on a Windows product's sales
If you know of a Windows developer who could use this type of information as a guide to bringing their Windows product to the Macintosh, please feel free to pass this along.

Thinking Different(ly)
A topic of endless and enduring fascination for me is trying to fathom how and why people form such different opinions and affinities about things. Why are some people liberals and others conservative? Why do some people like Chevies and others prefer Fords? What makes some people like dogs and detest cats, while others take the diametrically opposing view? Why do some like the toilet paper to unroll from the top while others adamantly insist that it should emerge from the bottom? You say to-MAY-to and I say to-MAH-to, and so on.

This tidbit is from:
Dan Babcock, <dan@babcockltd.com>
Mac loyalists have always known that you can't compare a Mac to the low end PC clones. We know you can't expect Apple to price excellent quality Macs the same as poor quality PCs.
Now it looks like the PC world is waking up also. Cheap PCs aren't worth the money. Check out the CNN story at:
<http://cnnfn.com/digitaljam/9809/28/pcs_pkg/>
Here is the lead: "NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Consumers love to buy cheap PCs, but a new survey suggests that owning them may be somewhat of a headache. A new survey from Windows Magazine (not affiliated with the popular operating system) found that 13 percent of all PCs had serious problems, including failures, when they first came home."

Date: Thu, 8 Oct 1998 08:46:54 -0700 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: Tidbit - Adobe(R) ImageStyler Beta
This tidbit is from:
Norman Stratton, <nstratto@adobe.com>
On September 14th Adobe announced ImageStyler, "powerful new Web graphics software for the creative business user." I won't bore you with the full press release. You can read it at <www.adobe.com>, or directly at <www.adobe.com/prodindex/imagestyler/main.html>
The reason I want 'listas to get involved relates to the relative number of Windows versus Macintosh downloads of the preview release (Beta). When ImageStyler was first announced, Mac downloads outnumbered Windows downloads almost three to one. But after the first few reviews, the Windows downloads have consistently outnumbered Mac downloads 5 to 1.
I don't know if these numbers reflect the ratio of web users by platform, or the state of the Macintosh market in general. Or if these numbers reflect the medium used to relay the ImageStyler message. I don't really care why the Macintosh downloads are so low; I just want them to be higher. I want to make sure every Macintosh user knows about the new software Adobe has developed for Macintosh. This list seems to be the place to do just that.
So, if you are a Macintosh user and you have tried making graphics for web pages before (or even if you haven't) go to the Adobe web site and read the information on Adobe ImageStyler. If it interests you, download the preview release and take it for a test drive. Check out the User Forum for ImageStyler and read what other people have said and are doing with this new software from Adobe. And if you like it, spend $130 US and buy a copy when it is released.
To see what reviewers think of Adobe ImageStyler see <http://www.webdeveloper.com/categories/design/design_reviews_imagestyler.h tml>>, <http://www.zdnet.com/pcweek/news/0914/14madob.html>
== Disclaimer === Yes, I work for Adobe. Yes, I am one of the primary engineers on this project. Yes, I am biased towards this product. Yes, I am a Macintosh zealot. No, I don't speak for Adobe. No, Adobe does not speak for me. No, you may not borrow my car.
