Review: HTML Turbo

By John Farr

VSE HTML Turbo is a new tool that optimizes HTML documents so that they
become much smaller and load much quicker into Web browsers such as
Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. The optimization does
not change the way web browsers will display the document.

This announcement is from:

<mailto: "Roger Ridpath" roger@sitejazz.com>

I¼m excited to tell the EvangeList about smartGIF¼s selection as a åHot
New Product¼ in the December issue of HOW magazine, The Bottom Line
Design Magazine. The media is taking notice of what users already know,
smartGIF is the FIRST and ONLY Photoshop plug-in that slices images.

But HOW magazine isn¼t the only publication to take notice. Macformat,
Britain¼s best-selling Macintosh magazine, selected SmartGIF to appear on
it¼s December cover CD. Macformat also states that smartGIF "refines
Photoshop¼s export abilitiesä"

smartGIF is also a great compliment to other Web creation tools such as
Adobe¼s Photoshop, NetObjects Fusion, Macromedia¼s Dreamweaver,
Filemaker's HomePage, and GoLive's Cyberstudio.

smartGIF can be downloaded at <http://www.sitejazz.com> or purchased at
<http://www.sitejazz.com/buysmartgif> Discount pricing for multiple
copies is also available. A five-pack costs $199, and a 10-pack costs
$399.

Subject: PR - ProSession FM 2.0

This announcement is from:

<mailto: "Bob Patin" bpatin@home.com>

Longterm Solutions is pleased to announce version 2.0 of ProSession FM, a
database solution for studio musicians and music professionals.

ProSession is a FileMaker Pro database solution for tracking income and
accounts receivable for studio musicians. Because of the specific nature
of the studio recording industry, ProSession has been developed to
exactly meet the needs of the professional musician, making it simple to
record and track music income. Users can view their income in several
different ways--a main screen shows totals for each month, for the
year-to-date, by user-definable categories; events can be viewed for each
month, showing where and when each event occurred; accounts receivable is
automatically generated showing receivables listed in order of their
past-due status; invoices can be generated, clients tracked; a musicians
scheduling form is included for hiring musicians for recording sessions.
ProSession FM can also be used as a calendar, offering month and weekly
views.

ProSession FM has been compiled as a standalone solution, meaning that
users do not need to own FileMaker Pro to work with it. A
fully-functional 30-day demo is available at:

This request is from:

<mailto: "Balkowitsch, Kris" balkowitsch.kris@bgsd.k12.wa.us>

I need help to keep our Human Resources Department from going over to the
dark side! I'm in Information Services at a large Washington State school
district. Our admin is mostly Macs. The HR department wants to purchase
some clerical testing software but has been able to find only PC
programs, such as OPAC, QWIZ and Know It All. Does anyone know of any Mac
based testing programs?

Subject: ?? - WWW.SCOUR.NET Media Agent For the Mac

This request is from:

<mailto: "Adam Bontaine" adam@pdust.com>

Scour.net is dedicated to providing mp3s, videos, images, etc. of almost
every band imaginable. It is a very good site with a lot of great mp3s
(which I am interested in) Unfortunately, to download these mp3s and
videos, etc. a program called a Scour Media Agent needs to be used to
access them, and there is no mac version. They are willing to give the
person willing to convert the media agent all the information that they
would need to do it. Im wondering if anyone would be interested in doing
this conversion.

Look here for information about doing the conversion:

Subject: ?? - Flatpanel Touchscreens

This request is from:

<mailto: bwyman@neaq.org>

My longtime preferred vendor for exhibit touchscreens, Microtouch, has
decided to not provide MacOS support for their new flatpanel
touchscreens. It's unfortunate, too, because I got an eval unit and the
display was nice, bright, and crisp.

So, I need to find a new source. Ideally, I want a flatpanel touchscreen
that's at least 15", displaying 1024x768, and using capacitive technology
to stand up to continued long-term use.

I know that NEC is making some (oddly, with microtouch components), but
are there other good sources? And, even more importantly, has anyone used
a flatpanel touchscreen in a public display and had it last? Any help
would be appreciated and any results will be tabulated and reposted back
to the evangelist. Thanks.

Subject: $$ - Launch Key 1.5

This special offer is from:

<mailto: "Bob Williams" bob@trivectus.com>

TriVectus is proud to announce Launch Key 1.5, a major update to our
shareware Launch Key 1.0.

Launch Key is a small utility that allows you to assign up to ten
Finder-clickable objects to a quick keyboard combination to make them
available instantly at any time, no matter what program is in front.

Since the assigned object can be anything clickable in the Finder, you
can assign such diverse things as a desktop printer (to see what's in the
queue quickly), an AppleScript applet, an alias to a remote server, an
important document, and of course applications like your e-mail program
or your web browser. All of these are just a key press away with Launch
Key.

In the past, people who've wanted this kind of functionality in their
Macs have had to resort to either an extension/control panel (which
usually results in some sort of incompatibility), or a full blown macro
utility like KeyQuencer (which not only takes tons of memory and is
overkill for this, but is still a problematic extension or control
panel). No longer: Launch Key takes a mere 128 KB of memory when you're
not configuring it, and it is an application, so it is much less likely
to suffer from compatibility problems, plus it can be started and stopped
on-the-fly without restarting. Even though it's an application, Launch
Key runs just as transparently as if it were a control panel.

As a strong supporter of the Mac way, TriVectus has always offered a 20%
discount to EvangeList members on its premier products, and Launch Key
1.5 is no exception. Normally priced at $15, this Mac-only program is
available to list members for just $12. Once you've tried out Launch Key
and are ready to take advantage of our offer, visit:

<http://www.trivectus.com/evangelist/index.shtml>

There we have all the information you need to register on-line quickly
and securely.

You can download Launch Key and any of our other products from our web
site at:

Subject: Tidbit - iMacs At GraphExpo 98

This tidbit is from:

<mailto: "Trey Yancy" 73624.1477@compuserve.com>

The crowds and exhibits at this year's GraphExpo 98 / Converting Expo 98
were as impressive as ever, filling two huge exhibit halls at Chicago's
massive McCormick Place. Among the most prominent items of equipment were
two-story tall web presses and at least a dozen iMacs.

iMacs?

How can a few tiny, 40 lb iMacs scattered throughout that rambling
complex compete in prominence with an army of towering, churning,
clattering presses, folders, splindlers and mutilators? By being used to
run the multimedia presentations and software demos of at least a dozen
different companies, that's how.

In every booth where an iMac was placed, the iMac was an instant draw,
proving that it to be an excellent machine for trade shows. It is
affordable, reliable, has a focus on multimedia and is visually
compellling. People flock to see the onscreen presentations, as much to
see the machine as the vendor's sales pitch. It is like having your
presentation delivered by Cindy Crawford or Leonardo Dicapprio, but for
twelve hours a day non-stop. (Are you vendors listening?)
