Dell has posted a patch for the Year 2000 BIOS problem that has a very funny requirement... You have to keep your computer turned off for the month of January, 2000. Check out the instructions:
From <http://www.dell.com/year2000/tools/patch/prgmpatc.htm>
Summary
1.Install the software patch. 2.Turn off the system prior to midnight on 12/31/99. 3.Reboot the system after 2/1/00.
This is obviously a typo, but it is pretty funny.

Date: Tue, 1 Dec 1998 08:06:41 -0800 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: PR - Etchelon Tracer 2
Speed development of QuickTime Animation using Etchelon Tracer 2 from Etchelon Software.
Version 1 was announced on the Evanglist in June 1998. Version 2 has just been released. It is a major upgrade of the program since it can now morph shapes containing bitmap images (such as photographic images or textures) as well as plain colour 2D shapes. It also includes several new tools and many new improvements and bug fixes.
Etchelon Tracer allows you to quickly develop both vector and bitmap morphs with control. Output PICTs for conversion to animated GIF's or Quicktime Movies. You can draw freehand with the Freedom Pen, or if you wish, trace point by point over an imported background trace image. Clicking point to point, or tracing in a contiguous auto plotted line, Tracer allows you to reproduce for animation, the images you want.
Etchelon Tracer 2 is mac-only shareware. The shareware fee is $15(US). On-line payment is available through Kagi. Until registration there are some output restrictions but it is not save-disabled. It is available for download at:
<http://website.lineone.net/~andy.pritchard>
It has low system requirements: it is suitable for 68nnnn and PowerPC with 2.5Mb or more free RAM. It should run on any System 7 Colour Mac with a 13" monitor or better. The software has been tested on MacOS 7.5.5, 7.6, 8.0, 8.1, 8.5 and Quicktime 2.0 and 3.0.
Comments and queries are always welcome. <Mailto:> <mailto:etchelon@kagi.com>
Oh did I say that is Mac-Only (Mac-Only-Forever) Software?
Incidently, a big thank you to Apple for its worldwide release of MacOS 8.5 :-)

Date: Tue, 1 Dec 1998 08:06:51 -0800 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: PR - BarbaBatch 2.5
This announcement is from:
<mailto: "John Pattenden" john@macsourcery.com>
MacSourcery and AudioEase, developers of multimedia and professional digital audio software jointly released version 2.5 of their BarbaBatch Batch audio processor today.
Designed for fast high quality conversions of digital audio for use in internet, multimedia and professional production, BarbaBatch 2.5 now provides users with greater automation and sound processing flexibility.
Segment conversion allows users to convert custom 'snippets' of audio directly into internet savvy formats. Clips from an entire CD collection can be put on the internet with one click of the mouse.
Other new features include the ability seperately control the fade-in and fade-out of converted files as well as the conversion from and to of all flavours of QuickTime audio. Conversion to Macromedia Director compatible AIFC IMA files is also new BarbaBatch 2.5.
BarbaBatch 2.5 can process audio content stored in virtually any format including CD audio, QuickTime, Real Audio, MPEG, Sound Designer, AIFF, AIFCI MA,WAVE, NeXT/SUN and VOX
The QDesign encoder can compress audio files to 1/100th of their original size while maintaining the quality and integrity of the original audio file. The Professional Edition compresses files twice as quickly as the Basic Edition and allows users to improve the character of a sound file.
Users can change the file type, sample rate, bit depth, and number of channels in one pass; add fade-in and fade-out up to five seconds long; remove extraneous low level sounds through gating; normalize a file; and employ peak-limiting to optimise sound quality. QuickTime Movie playback is now supported in three places: batch play, add files, and input dialogs .
Conversion setting "recipes" can be saved and reused and multiple conversions can be processed in one batch. Detailed log files are also generated for reliable unattended conversions
A demo version of BarbaBatch 2.5 is available from MacSourcery at:
<http://www.macsourcery.com>.
BarbaBatch 2.5 is priced at $395 upgrades from version 2.4 and higher are free. Upgrades from earlier versions are $50.

Date: Tue, 1 Dec 1998 08:06:54 -0800 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: Tidbit - Macs Used In Flag Restoration
Recently, NASA participated in the first phase of a flag restoration project in conjuction with the National Museum of American History. The three year project will "preserve and protect its best-known and most powerful artifact symbolizing the American nation--the Star-Spangled Banner."
For a history lesson: <http://www.si.edu/nmah/objects/ssb02.htm>
NASA's part was to scan the 30' x 34' flag with a highly accurate, computer controlled, super-cooled infared camera. The computers used for camera control and data aquisition were a Macintosh IIci and a IIfx.
The scan went well...
"Thanks for working on our old Macs. They did a nice job at the Smithsonian, and it looks like the 2Fx [sic] will be [used for another project] in January."
On December 3rd, the History Channel will air a show about the restoration project.

Kaged, The Magic Orbs puzzles the Mac!
<http://www.mbyte.com/Temp_kjd1.html>
With over 10,000 puzzles and nearly infinite combinations, this Macintosh puzzle game will keep the young and old entertained for hours on end. Play freeform to hone your skills before attempting to go against the clock in countdown mode. Challenge yourself and others to a contest of wits and speed in this game that is unlike anything you have ever played.
Each puzzle consists of a game board and a set of colored orbs. You must maneuver the orbs to match the correct puzzle solution, quickly and in as few moves as possible. It's not that easy though, every time you move an orb, it cycles through a color sequence. And if that's not hard enough, on some boards your move may cause other orbs to change color.
