This announcement is from:
Teng Chou Ming, cmteng1@pl.jaring.my
Macintosh software developer Teng Chou Ming is pleased to announce version 3.0 of Extension Overload, the simplest way to keep your Mac healthy !
Extension Overload is a "self-reading" document with lots of information about all the system extensions and control panels that are littering the System folder of every Macintosh. Extension Overload conviniently lists them by name and explains their purpose. That way you (the user) can decide whether to keep a certain control panel or extension or not. Additionally, Extension Overload contains information about Mac error codes, Easter Eggs (little gimmicks hidden somewhere in the software), how to speed up your Mac, and other useful things.
Extension Overload v3 cover Extensions and Control Panel from System 7, 7.5, 7.6, Mac OS 8, 8.1, 8.5 and iMac. Currently Extension Overload reviews 756 extensions and 285 control panels - of course this does not mean that all of them are in the system folder of your Macintosh... ;-)
Why use Extension Overload ?
Control panels and extensions serve one purpose: They "extend" the operation system of your Macintosh and provide additional functions to the user and to programs running on your machine.
For example, the QuickTimeTM extension allows the Simple Text application to play movies, something that would be impossible otherwise. However, often some control panels and extensions get installed which are not necessary for a certain Mac model or application. (Obviously, if you don't have a network, you don't need network software.) On the downside, control panels and extensions eat up space on the harddisk and in memory. Even worse, some extensions and control panels sometimes conflict with each other, causing your Mac to crash. Installing too much extensions and control panels will also slow down your computer. In these situation Extension Overload helps you to find out, which items in yor system folder you actually need and which ones you can safely remove to keep your system small and efficient. But even if you are just curious what all the items in the system folder do, Extension Overload is for you.
Therefore, Extension Overload is useful if:
* you keep recovering from a crash. * you are trying to solve an extension conflict. * you want to make your system use as less RAM as possible. * you want to save disk space by deleting unnessecary files. * you want to know what all the items do. * you are an experienced user who just needs a handy reference. * you want to learn your way around the machine.
Extension Overload was given rating : 4 cows out of 5 cows from www.tucows.com 4 mice out of 5 mice from www.macdownload.com 4 smiling face out of 5 from www.applelink.com 'Very Good' from www.atmp.com 'An essential ulitity' from MacShareware

Date: Mon, 30 Nov 1998 11:36:46 -0800 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: PR - Stalker Release New 3.0 CommuniGate
Stalker Software Inc. today announced their latest release of CommuniGate, an advanced, MacOS Intranet and Internet messaging system. Since its first release in September 1995, CommuniGate is still recognized as the only integrated messaging system supporting LAN, Internet E-mail, network Fax, Paging, IMAP, Lists and more.
During the past year Stalker Software has released two new Internet Mail Servers, Stalker Internet Mail Server (SIMS) for the MacOS and the industry strength mail server, CommuniGate Pro supporting most major platforms including Apple's upcoming MacOS X Server.
For these new servers, Stalker has developed and implemented that latest technologies against SPAM and is regarded as having the best known Anti-spam features available on the market today. Stalker has now incorporated the Anti- spam functionalities of SIMS and the CommuniGate Pro Mail Server into the SMTP Module of the CommuniGate Messaging System for the MacOS.
Similar to SIMS, in the new CommuniGate SMTP module, the name of a real-time black listing server (RBL) can be entered in the SMTP module settings. When CommuniGate receives mail from a remote host, it checks not only its own black list, but consults the black-listing server, too. If the sending host is included into the blacklisting server tables, messages from that host are not accepted. The entire process is automatic and allows all mail server administrators to centralize and to distribute their knowledge about offending sites. Since the blacklisting servers are implemented using the existing DNS technology and software, several servers are already available on the Net, and they can be used with the CommuniGate mail server.
The new SMTP module also adds the remote-path verification and on-the-fly relay checking features.
CommuniGate for the MacOS uses its own internal format for messages. Incoming Internet messages were converted into that format so the CommuniGate client software could read them. In today's world, various Internet-based mail clients are used. These clients needed to have access to the original Internet message format (MIME). Stalker has now implemented the RFC Industry MIME standards, so any mail relayed through the server is now passed on in its original format as well as stored on the server in CommuniGate's own format. This now allows users more flexibility in choosing client applications to be used with the CommuniGate Server.
In addition, MIME encoding of embedded PICTs has been changed to make it compatible with other programs like CyberDog and to make text-only mailers such as Eudora, and QuickMail store the PICT objects as PICT files.
The new release of the CommuniGate server adds more features making the administrative tasks still easier to perform. The new Server uses the PowerKey(TM) daemon as a watch dog. In addition, VICOM Internet Gateway is explicitly supported now. Along with better administrative features, more user upgrades including new Server-wide Rules and additional logging functions have also been implemented.
Since CommuniGate is a modular based system, upgrading the CommuniGate Server and the SMTP module will be separate. The new CommuniGate Server upgrade with all new administrative and relaying enhancements will be a 30% fee of the original purchase price for those who purchased the server before October 1997. To take advantage of the Anti-spam features in the new SMTP module there will be a flat $50.00 charge. For all CommuniGate Servers purchased after October 1997, the new CommuniGate Server 3.0 and the new SMTP module will be upgraded for free.
As always a fully functional, 5-user trial version of CommuniGate with all messaging gateways, is available for free from the Stalker web server at <http://www.stalker.com>.
