There is a very interesting discussion in the Chronicle of HIgher Education web page about whether Apple can regain its stature in higher education. Most of the responses seem to be positive. Perhaps some of you in higher ed would like to respond to it? It's at:

Discussions range from simple topics such as processor speed and RAM configurations to topics about ergonomic design and rumored technologies. Traffic varies from 10 messages a day to more than 70 depending on the topics. A digest version is available.
The CPort-List is a forum for discussion and speculation about Apple's forthcoming consumer level portable product. Once it's released the list will transform into a place to discuss the issues that relate to using, maintaining, and troubleshooting Apple's new portable.

This tidbit is from:
Greg Huddleston <mailto:gregh@cdcla.com>
Well the new iMac look & feel is invading all of Hollywood & Madison avenue these days...
In the new Star Trek movie, in a scene in captain Pickards ready room, I couldn't help but notice a very neat looking flat screen with a translucent dark blue background with white edging...& I immediately thought
Coincidence - I think not.
PS: Movie was pretty good too... __________________________ Digital Guy Sez:
It was. I was planning to see it again with some friends this Thursday, so I'll have to look for the "iMac of the future" then.
Side note: Lately my geeky side has overwhemled my suspension of disbelief in a very strange way...I look at the computers and technology in movies like "Star Trek" and my first thought is..."Gee, you'd think they would have gotten further than that with interface design in the 25th century...and what's with that computer's voice? They can design holographic characters but not a computer with personality?"
Oh well....

This tidbit is from:
Gregoire Seither <mailto:gregoire@pobox.com>
Among the contenders for the title of oldest Macintosh owner in the whole universe, one may note proven 102 year old Babakar ABOULAYE, living in a village in northern-Senegal (Africa), proud owner of an LC 475 and undisputed champion of the game "Crystal Crazy" (Cassady and Greene). The LC 475 runs on car batteries fed by solar cells and is also used for training kids in typing and writting letters. (Source: local bishopry newsletter sent to German relief association).

This request is from:
<mailto:"BLGryph@aol.com">
I am working on a book called Ethernet Networking Clearly Explained, which will be published shortly after the first of the year by AP Professional. One of the chapters covers software for use in designing and simulating network layouts. Unfortunately, the only products I've been able to find run under Windows (for example, NetCracker Designer).
Surely there is something similar for the Mac? I would hate to have the chapter talk about Windows software only. Does some evangelist know of software that I might use?
Thanks, Jan L. Harrington Black Gryphon Ltd.

This follow-up is from:
<mailto:John.McDonnell@gen.friendsfirst.ie>
This is in response to Charlotte Carey's story about Home and Away: I actually noticed one of the cute little bondi blue thingies in the background in a few shots about a fortnight ago. This could be because RTE (the Irish network that shows Home and Away) is a little ahead of ITV (the British network) or it could have been beforehand (seeing as I also receive ITV). I really should've paid more attention! I was actually going to post this as a handy way of knowing how old your soaps are ;)
As an aside, the Students' Union in my University (National University of Ireland, Galway) has always been a Mac based outfit and recently invested in an iMac to replace the receptionist's aging LC. This fits in quite nicely with the two 6500 minitowers and the G3 desktop. Anyway, they were so impressed that a second one is being purchased for Clubs and Societies' use to sit beside the wintel box which is there already (a prize for some competition or other). No prizes for guessing which will be used more often. Also, the new Educational Technology lab is apparently quite a sight - row upon row of lovely iMacs. __________________________ Digital Guy Sez:
Another aside, if I may: I've noticed a sudden surge in international postings. While the list has always been a worldwide phenom, it's heartening to see more active subscribers from other countries speaking up. :)
A sudden musing: I wonder if high sales of the iMac internationally have anything to do with this?

Just a thought, for people who are hosting (not just designing) on Macintosh. I work for an ISP, and (after pulling some teeth) are now running 2 Mac web servers, in addition to our Unix web server. Every web site that gets hosted on that box, I make sure to list at <http://www.netcraft.com,> as part of their web server survey. The Mac web server market share is woefully anemic (<2%) according to that, but is *much* higher, according to surveys I've seen.
What can we do? For *every* site that you host on Macintosh, add it to the survey at <http://www.netcraft.com> to increase our 'voice'! I've added over a dozen in the last 2 weeks...

The Computer up for grabs in Aussie soap "Home and Away" was indeed an iMac and was shown in all it's glory just after it was won. The computer had in fact become an integral part of the storyline with some of the characters in the soap talking of little else.
It took pride of place on the kitchen table of the winner and appeared in a few episodes after that. I've since stopped watching :-)
One episode in particular was very interesting in that one of the characters shouted about how great the computer was, and he quickly followed this up with a rundown of the computers spec.
Looks like the marketing guys in Apple Autralia have been working hard - and all this just in time for the Christmas rush.

Date: Thu, 17 Dec 1998 02:05:10 -0800 From: The EvangeList Mailing List <evangelist@apple.com> Subject: PR - Projector 1.0
This announcement is from:
Bob Patin <mailto:bpatin@home.com>
Longterm Solutions is pleased to announce the release of their newest FileMaker Pro-based solution, Projector 1.0. Projector creates detailed budget proposals for professional music producers who are putting together recording projects. Developed in Nashville, Tennessee with the help of several world-renowned producers, Projector's worksheets contain all pertinent information necessary for budgeting any major recording project.
Using a 5-step entry process which walks the user through the creation of a budget, a worksheet is created which covers the following areas of a recording: client data, studio data, musician data, production data, and mastering data. All A.F. of M. (American Federation of Musicians) recording wage scales are computed exactly, including pension contributions and health & welfare payments; all A.F.T.R.A. (Am. Federation of Television & Radio Artists) wage scales are computed as well, including health & welfare payments. Studios, clients and engineers are entered once into Projector, after which their data (address, phone numbers, studio rates, engineer rates, etc.) is accessed by choosing that studio/client/engineer from a popup menu.
Projector is a standalone FileMaker solution, which means the user does not have to own Filemaker in order to use it. A fully-functional demo version of Projector is available from Longterm Solutions at their web site.
