How to chat in Talk City

Talk City provides EZtalk, its own Java-compatible chat client, allowing
chatters to go to a URL in their Java-ready web browser and begin
chatting immediately. It is also a great way to view the click and stick
topical banners used all throughout the TalkCity server! EZtalk works
well with Windows and Power Macintosh PCI machines, but not reliably with
680X0 Macs. Users with an appropriate browser (such as Netscape Navigator
3.0+ or MicrosoftInternet Explorer 3.0+) will find EZtalk at:

http://www.talkcity.com/chat

OR you can go directly to the link that hooks up with the room
#Computer-MacSOS at:
http://www.talkcity.com/chat.htmpl?room=Computer-MacSOS

OR

You may also use IRC (Internet Relay Chat) clients to access Talk City:

You can download Macintosh shareware chat clients at the following sites:

ChatNet: http://www.elsinc.com/chatnet.html IRCLE: http://www.ircle.com
MacIRC: http://www.macirc.com/ or http://www.invantage.com/windwalkr/
ShadowIRC: http://www.glue.umd.edu/~dshadow/shadowirc/ Snak:
http://www.snak.com

To use any Mac or PC chat client you must type in the following
information:

server: chat.talkcity.com port: 6667

To join a room, just type: /join #roomname (replace #roomname with the
name of the room you want to go to, such as: /join #Computer-MacSOS)

You may use an IRC client if the Java client causes you problems.

This request is from:

<mailto:"HPPYHULGN@aol.com">

I'm looking for a Real Estate software package similar to "Top Producer" a
program that puts together real estate listing presentations for potential
real estate clients. A call to the Top Producer 1-800 number was answered
by the usual "there's not enough of a market out there to port our product
to the Mac". The representative did concede that he knew that many agencies
were running their software under emulators without any trouble. I wanted
to ask why then, does Top producer think there is no market for their
software if so many mac users were running it under emulation, but I
remained cordial and told him I would continue to look for something that
ran native on the Mac.

Now my problem: My wife needs a Laptop, I want a G-3, but she needs Top
Producer, I think she is Okay with running it under emulation, but I would
much rather support a Mac developer than to artificially inflate onother
Wintell developer's sales figures. She is also worried about compatibility
with her agencies' soon to arrive local network, as well as the MLS dial up
database. I would appreciate any help from other Realtors out in Mac land
in convincing her that the Mac platform is what we should stick to.

I manage one half of a campaign to get Origin Systems, Inc. to redevelop
its Mac version of Ultima Online, its highly-addictive ORPG.

I just joined the EvangeList, mainly because I understand that EvangeListas
were the cause for many of the recent entries in Mark de Bernardi's
Petition. We both thank you for that.

I've been sending updates at least every week to a number of contact
addresses. I'll send them to the EvangeList now, too. The Petition reached
3,800 entries today. We're maintaining contact with people on the inside of
UO's development and hope to be able to let the outside world know exactly
what we're up to very soon.

Until then, please sign the Petition. Try not to enter more than once per
person, and if you can, identify yourself in terms of your gaming; i.e.
"power player" or otherwise.

I will say that this concerted effort has got Origin's attention. Now we
just have to follow through.

If someone would forward me the message that was sent through the
EvangeList re: UOMac, I would appreciate it.

I was told to send you a note regarding probably the oldest iMac owner. She
is my 92 year old grandmother, Ethel Greene!

This is the first and probably will be her only computer. What attracted
her to this model wasn't just my steering her, it was the size and speed.
Having never owned nor operated a computer before, I felt this would be her
best bet. Besides, it is perfect for what she plans to use it for, surfing
the net and monitoring her stocks & bonds.

She bought the system Saturday afternoon and by 8:00 p.m. that evening, she
had all of her stocks recorded in the Quicken program. Needless to say, she
has been anxiously awaiting the new week, so that she could track her stock
daily!

If this isn't a testimonial to how user friendly Macs are, I really don't
know what is!

Subject: PR - MultiMode 1.2.1 Released

This announcement is from:

Chris Smolinski <mailto:cps@blackcatsystems.com>

Black Cat Systems (http://www.blackcatsystems.com) announces that MultiMode
version 1.2.1 has been released.

MultiMode is an application which allows your Macintosh to decode several
different modes of non-voice communication often heard on shortwave radio.

MultiMode allows you to decode and display morse code, RTTY, Fax, ACARS,
and many other modes on your Mac, without any extra hardware! MultiMode now
also allows you to send morse code.

In the past, dedicated hardware, often costing hundreds or thousands of
dollars, was necessary to demodulate and decode this transmissions. Today,
you can use the processing power of your Macintosh to decode and display
these modes, without any hardware.

MultiMode decodes the following signals:

Morse Code (CW) RTTY (Baudot) ASCII SITOR-A SITOR-B / FEC / NAVTEX WEATHER
/ SATELLITE FAX ACARS WWVB Time Decode DTMF Audio Spectrum Display to aid
in properly tuning in stations

Subject: ?? - PC(MCIA) Cards On Desktop Macs?

This request is from:

Ivan Hazelton <mailto:"ivan.hazelton@uas.alaska.edu">

I work at the University of Alaska SE as half of the Network/Desktop
support staff. Our old housing apartment complex is being connected to our
campus ethernet via Raytheon Wireless networking solution called Raylink
because of the prohibitive cost for running 10bT into each apartment.

Raytheon's solution is composed of Raylink PC(MCIA) cards which will work
in laptop PC's and PowerBooks. There is an ISA card adapter for Desktop
PC's but not an adapter for Macs (SCSI, NuBus, PDS or PCI).

Unless I find a way to attach these PC cards to a desktop mac my boss is
going to issue a recommendation that incoming freshmen and new computer
purchases be wintel PC's or Powerbooks. I have searched what seems like
every where on the web and come up with a few devices that will adapt PC
memory cards but not anything like the Raylink stuff.

Help! I'm willing summerize back to the 'list and/or forward what I learn
on to anyone interested.

This request is from:

Anne Smith <mailto:"anne_smith@amshow.com">

My company has an ancient UNIX based MASS 90 accounting system that needs
to be upgraded. We have about 30 employees and besides the accounting
system we're all Mac based. We would love to move the accounting department
to Mac -- and not to Windows NT. However, we need a nice powerful package
and a company behind it that will support it and be able to answer all our
comptroller's accounting-oriented questions. We don't want something out of
the box and then we're totally on our own.

We're looking at Clients & Profits and Silent Partner but they're really
tailor-made for ad agencies and we're a publisher of resource books in
which clients buy ad space, but we also publish a magazine, so we need a
little flexibility. A general accounting package would be fine. Peachtree
just sold some Mac accounting software to Aatrix that looks interesting
called Mac P&L or, something. Does anyone know anthing about this? Does
anyone know of any companies that offer "serious" accounting software for
Macintosh?

If so, (Thanks!) you can e-mail me (Anne Smith) <mailto:annes@amshow.com>

This tidbit is from:

<mailto:"IR004861@mindspring.com (Pete)">

I was recently sent to a PC troubleshooting seminar, to get 'up to
speed' on the PC side of things. (thankfully I'm already at speed on
Apple products.) Anyways, I took my 1400/166 there to take notes on,
since I can type a heck of a lot faster and legibly than I can
scribble. At one of the breaks, the instructor came up to me and
said, in a conspirator-volume:

"I have a Mac at home, and haven't had to open it up for two years. I
like it a lot."

I thought that was interesting to say the least. After a few minutes,
three other people came over, complimented me on my mac, and told me
that they worked/supported both platforms - and the macs gave them
about 1/10th the troubles that PC's did.

BTW, I was really amazed at how much more trouble PC's are than I
expected... I came away from the seminar with even more appreciation
for Macs in general. Don't even get me talking about what PC's look
like on the inside.
