Subject: Tidbit - iArch Global Software Smotel Giveaway

This tidbit is from:

Nicholas Rhodes <mailto: nick@iarchglobal.com>

iArch Global Software would like to announce that as of 20 March
1999, you will be able to download for free the full version of
Smotel - its hotel reservation and management system. There will be
two downloads - a full application (filemaker runtime) and "just the
files" (filemaker 3./4.0 files). Not only is the program free but
it's source code (FM PRO) is unlocked so you can modify or change the
program as you see fit and also see how it works.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS ?

Smotel was our first application and we will be shortly releasing a
new hotel system (much more heavyweight) that is a complete re-write
so we decided to release it into the public domain. All we ask you to
day is send us an e-mail saying "thank you" and donate $5 to any
charity.

Note: This was our first application (2 years ago) and we were
learning FMPRO at the time so the programming is not what you would
call elegant !!!

Come to: http://www.iarchglobal.com for your download

Subject: Tidbit - iMac Ad-- In PC Catalog

This tidbit is from:

Erin Hope <mailto:hopeles@turbonet.com>

The latest PC Zone catalog (Vol. 69b) is running a full page ad for
the iMac and USB accessories on pg. 19. It's the only mention of a
mac in the entire catalog and add is writen fully promoting the iMac,
right down to the top of the page quoting the associated press in
large bold letters "The Nation's Top-Selling PC!". I wonder how many
pc users convert because of this ad?

Subject: Followup - Connecting New iMacs to a TVI 925 Host Site

This follow-up is from:

Nik Kovalenko <mailto:kovalenk@utw.com>

Some weeks ago, I posted a request for help on connecting new iMacs
to a TVI 925 host site. Your responses were very gratifying, and a
bit overwhelming! I received almost 80 messages with information, as
well as several more expressing encouragement. Thank you all!

To summarize the experience, this is how things shake out. The
greatest number of you recommended MacEmulate from Cornerstone Data
Systems, which the client has purchased and is very happy with.
Contact information: Cornerstone Data System, Anaheim, CA
714-772-5527,

http://www.cornerstone.com/

A close second in the "balloting" was the Vicom solution Vicomsoft.
See http://www.vicomsoft.com/hostcon/host.macos.html or email
mailto:sales_1@vicomsoft.com for more info.

Another popular choice was a variety of TN3270 emulators.
Unfortunately, most of these don't support direct dial-in, which the
service provider's firewall required. Direct telnet/TN3270 access
was not an option in this case. Products recommended included
TCPAxcess (http://www.andrew.com) and TN3270 (from NCSA I think).

Several of you recommended using the communications portion of
AppleWorks/ClarisWorks. Unfortunately, while this does support
VT-100 emulation, this particular provider's data stream doesn't
format properly on screen with any of the VT emulations. We tried,
but just couldn't make it work. Also included in this area were
Zterm (Alverson Software, PO Box 175, Maineville OH 45039-0175),
White Knight (formerly Red Ryder), ProTerm (InTrec Software (602)
992-1345, http://www.proterm.com/), MicroPhone Pro (Software Ventures
Corporation, mailto:microphone@svcdudes.com) and DataComet
(http://www.databeast.com/dataCometY2K.html).

Other product receiving honorable mention include MactoPicplus and
MacWise, both from Carnation Software
(http://www.webcom.com/~carn/carnation/HT.Carn.Home.html). Demos of
both these products worked fine, but the client decided to go with
another product. However, I can recommend either or both for this
type of work.

VersaTerm (http://www.synergy.com/vt.htm)

mxConnect by Cambridge Computing.

Reflections for the Macintosh from WRQ (http://www.wrq.com)

Eureka for Non-vt100 (http://lyra.rlg.org/eurterm.html)

Brown Term from Queen's University
(http://ccsmacinfo.ccs.queensu.ca/MacSDistribution/BrownTerm.html).
Unfortunately, I was never able to silence the term bell, even in
consultation with Brown University. Other than that annoyance, the
product works fine, and I wish I could have used it for this client.
The constant chime was not from the modem, but from the software
itself.

Lastly, several recommended SoftWindows/Virtual PC to run their
existing Procomm Plus software. However, the point of the entire
exercise was to get them on to one platform (Mac of course!), and
completely away from The Dark Side. But I do appreciate the
suggestions from a helpful operation point of view!

So there you go! Hope this is helpful for anyone else trying to do
this sort of terminal emulation.
