Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 22:21:59 -0800 From: Guy Kawasaki <Kawasaki@garage.com> Subject: $$-Special Offer SystemSentry posting
This special offer is from:
Stephen Becker, steve@macease.com
I'm pleased to announce a special offer to EvangeListas for SystemSentry.
Many times when your Mac crashes it's due to a problem with your machine handling its memory resources, and many of these crashes come with a dialog box that presents a difficult-to-interpret error code. At least some memory-related problems are directly attributable to a bug in a specific program, while others may be due to a problem with your operating system, your hardware, or fragmented memory. Since your computer uses its memory resources in a dynamic way, effectively tracking its memory usage requires a dynamic approach.
SystemSentry provides you with an easy way to dynamically monitor the memory requirements of your computer -- even when it's not displayed on your Desktop! The benefits of this include helping you determine which activities lead to memory-related problems, helping you increase the stability of your machine's configuration, helping you determine which programs have a bug which causes them to not return memory to your computer when you quit them, letting you know which combination of programs you can safely run simultaneously on your computer, and showing you whether you really need to install more RAM. Besides, I think it's pretty cool to be able to dynamically observe how a computer is using its memory resources!
SystemSentry:
* Doesn't require launching a separate application.
* Doesn't require any technical knowledge about your computer.
* Doesn't require learning a bunch of keyboard commands.
* Doesn't get in your way when using your computer.
SystemSentry:
* Gives you the choice of a Pie Gauge or a text-based display.
* Gives you the option of placing it anywhere you choose on your Desktop.
* Gives you the option of hiding/showing its display with a click of the Mouse or with a keyboard shortcut.
* Gives you an Auto-Alert option which works even when SystemSentry is not visible -- after all, it needs to live up to its name!
* Gives you a built-in Help system that describes the function of each button (they are really pretty self-descriptive, though) and provides built-in tips on using SystemSentry.
* Gives you a quick visual prompt as to what is going on by dynamically updating the color of the display to reflect the amount of memory being used on your system.
* Automatically adjusts itself when you use Virtual Memory or RAM Doubler

This announcement is from:
SOHO Summit <mailto:anne@sohosummit.com>
Does your company create products or services for the SOHO (small office/home office) market? If so, you should know about the upcoming SOHO Summit, scheduled for May 23-25 in Carlsbad, California.
The three-day gathering will showcase the latest SOHO information on demographic shifts, macro and micro trends, and key technologies affecting SOHO workers, according to Terri Lonier, small business expert and conference organizer (and longtime Macintosh evangelist!). It will also be a chance for companies to network and create new strategic partnerships, she says.
Apple Computer is among the sponsors of the event. Guy Kawasaki serves on the SOHO Summit Advisory Board and will be speaking at the event on "Rules for Revolutionaries," his new book.
The event is limited to 150 participants, and to qualify for the pre-registration discount, you must register by Friday, March 26th.
For more information, visit the SOHO Summit Web site at http://www.sohosummit.com.

Date: Mon, 15 Mar 1999 01:02:36 -0600 From: The EvangeList Mailing List <evangelist@apple.com> Subject: ?? - Groupwise 4.1 Mac Client
This request is from:
Duane Pandorf <mailto:dpandorf@earthlink.net>
I'm in the Naval Reserve and want to use my own new Mac PBG3 in the office. The Naval Reserve uses Groupwise 4.1 on PCs only to transmit mail, in-house and out to the internet. Other email programs like IE or Eudora aren't allowed.
Here's my problem. Novell no longer supports a Mac client for version 4.1. They do offer a Mac client version 5.2 but it's not backwards compatible with 4.1.
The Navy system administrators say they don't have a Mac client so I was hoping someone out there would have a Mac client version 4.1.
The client software is free -- it's just the hassle and expense of getting it and I'm willing to pay those costs.
To get by I'm running Virtual PC and emulating Windows 95 and hate it. I can use Dave to tie into our LAN and if I had the Mac client for Groupwise I'd be a happy camper.

This tidbit is from:
Ray Fox <mailto: foxwork@ns.net>
I wanted to turn the Evangelistas on to a cool new multi-media experience. It's an Enhanced CD entitled Dragonfly, put out by the rock band Sedona and created entirely on the Mac. Besides 11 headphone-worthy rock tracks, the Interactive CD-ROM sends the user on a virtual treasure hunt through 4 other-worldly QTVR panoramas, 2 videos, a silde show, and plenty of other goodies, all created with cutting edge Mac software.
The kicker is what's printed on the back cover of the CD. Under the System Requirements, it lists one final suggestion for ultimate game play: "Oh, and get a Mac."
You can check out the musical portion of Dragonfly and/or mail order it by going to the Sedona Website at:
http://www.sedonaworld.com.

Date: Mon, 15 Mar 1999 01:02:54 -0600 From: The EvangeList Mailing List <evangelist@apple.com> Subject: ?? - Mac MPEG Network
This request is from:
Steven Auslander <mailto:auslanders@aol.com>
My company operates a closed-circuit TV channel in multiple locations. We currently use a laserdisc player at each site to play our program material, and are unable to update the content as frequently as we'd like. I'm researching an alternative.
I want to place encoded MPEG 2 files on hard drives, and play that material back as a video source for a small cable television system. As the material requires updating, I want to be able to send the MPEG 2 updates over a modem as needed to individual client sites.
In looking at turnkey systems designed for this kind of application, all I find are NT Server and PC client networks. Can't we do this better than they can?
Please contact me with suggestions. Thank you in advance.

Date: Mon, 15 Mar 1999 01:03:05 -0600 From: The EvangeList Mailing List <evangelist@apple.com> Subject: Tidbit - UK Product Placement
This tidbit is from:
Keith Brindley <mailto: keith@brindley.demon.co.uk>
How about this for product placement? Next week's issue (6-12 March) of the Radio Times (the UK's premier TV and radio listings magazine, produced by the BBC, covering each week's programmes for terrestrial and satellite TV and radio), is devoted to a national fund-raising day for the charity Comic Relief. The day itself (12 March) - known as Red Nose Day, because just about everyone in the country (even Windozers join in) wears a red plastic nose - is a complete day of organised events and media attractions to raise money for the charity. It's fronted by many of the UK's top comedians, and the Radio Times cover for the week actually features one of our most famous, Victoria Wood, complete with red nose. She was drafted in to edit the magazine for the week. Behind her, though, on her editor's table on the glossy front cover is a strawberry iMac (complementing Victoria's red nose perfectly).
The iMac features again inside the magazine (on page 6), while on the opposite page of that spread a shot showing the editorial office features a PowerMac and Apple monitor (too small to see which models).
Unfortunately, while the Radio Times has a Web site <http://www.radiotimes.beeb.com/>, the magazine itself or its main features aren't usually available online.

This announcement from:
"Frank A. Milo" <mailto: firecatinc@firecatinc.com>
Extensive review of databases available to operate child daycares revealed no comprehensive solution for Macintosh owners, or for those who would implement database management if Mac software became available. Typical DOS packages are available at $1000 to $1500.
Firecat Technology Inc., Daytona Beach, Florida, is pleased to announce the commercial release of its' Child Daycare Operations Databases for Macintosh. The databases have been in use for several years at a major daycare with 150+ enrolled children. Refined and updated over time, the system is ready for national release. Licensees receive their copy with their logos, state ratios, local school names, and other "specialized" fields, including choice of passwords, locked out confidential layouts, etc. Two primary variants are offered: single shift and two shift (daytime and nigh time) center operations.
Fast, flexible, flawless. Stop the paperwork madness - get your life back. Go to the following link to view samples of the pages and links for the databases:
Software, Pty Ltd, today announced the release of version 1.2 of RumorMill, its shareware Mac OS News (NNTP) server.
The News protocol is ideally suited to public discussion, and RumorMill is designed to make it easy to create (and remove) local or shared Newsgroups. RumorMill (and other NNTP) servers can easily be linked together to create a wide spanning communication network.
RumorMill is ideal for business groups, schools, universities and any one else who is interested in a simple, scalable and widely supported means of providing group discussion. RumorMill can easily mix USENET newsgroups with local or off-site newsgroups which can be selectively pulled or fed from multiple servers.
RumorMill can be Remotely Administered, supports Newswatcher Prefs and Newsrc files and it has a small memory footprint. Amongst other security features RumorMill has Site Restrictions which can be used to prevent off-site (based on TCP/IP address) computers accessing the server.
RumorMill is US$35 shareware. Site and organisation-wide licenses are also available. Previous registered users of RumorMill can upgrade to RumorMill 1.2 for US$20. RumorMill 1.2 is a free upgrade for users who registered after Jan 1, 1999.

This announcement from:
<mailto:info@machack.com>
Sometimes even the greatest minds in the business lose track of time. Maybe they procrastinate a little too long, or maybe they get tied up in projects.
Whatever the cause, MacHack <http://www.machack.com/> is here to help. For years, discounted registration for this developers conference has extended well into the spring and up to tax time. This year is no different.
Attendees that register for MacHack 1999 by Midnight on April 15 will purchase their registrations at a $475. This represents a $50 discount off of the regular conference rate.
Developers large and small can benefit from the conference's informal atmosphere and unique environment maximize the opportunities for exchange of ideas and engineering techniques. The opportunity for one-on-one interaction with other engineers makes this a must attend conference for anyone serious about Macintosh or leading edge development issues. MacHack also presents a rare opportunity for those looking to hire the best and brightest up-and-coming software engineers.
The MacHax Group will again be hosting the legendary 'Best Hack Contest'. Competitors vie for the respect and admiration of their peers as well as the coveted 'Victor A-Trap' trophy. For many attendees, this event alone justifies travel to MacHack. The contest begins at midnight on Friday, June 25, and lasts into the wee hours of Saturday morning as contestants roll out their hacks to an ever more demanding audience.
MacHack, in its fourteenth year, remains centered around cutting edge software development. Each year the conference brings together well-known names in the software business, as well as many students and upstarts whose names we'll know soon enough, and fosters interaction between all of the attendees. MacHack's uniqueness derives from the informal feel of the conference and the LIVE coding that occurs around-the-clock during the conference.
MacHack 1999 will take place June 23-26 in Dearborn, Michigan. MacHack is a registered trademark of Expotech, Inc. MacHack is not affiliated with The MacHax Group, although the Hack Contest seems to keep happening each and every year!
