I heard that USR, Hayes, and Rockwell are coming out with a new protocol that allows 57.6k transmission speeds on regular analog phone lines.

Details are sketchy, but here's what I picked-up. The 57.6k modems will be for the hardcore Internet surfers. For some odd reason, it will only work with places that already have high-speed data connections (like Internet service providers). It can only download at 57.6k, it will upload at regular 33.6k.

I wish the article i read had more info. I'm curious to know why the user can only download at 57.6k, but not upload. Perhaps the article is wrong. In any case, breaking the 33.6k barrier would be great.
