[1] Apple Previews Mac OS 8.5 at Seybold

During a keynote address at the Seybold San Francisco/Publishing '98
conference, Steve Jobs previewed key features of Mac OS 8.5, a major
upgrade to the Macintosh operating system. This upgrade, to be
released in October, will include significant advances, including the
following:

The Sherlock search system.

A 2:1 improvement in file-copy performance over Mac OS 8.1.

The dramatically improved ColorSync extension, which will add
new algorithms from Agfa and Imation and will be made available
to Windows users.

A version of AppleScript that is PowerPC native, and is expected to
be as much as five times faster. Almost everything in the
operating system is scriptable, and scripts can be
attached to folders.

Major software developers including Adobe Systems, Macromedia, and
Quark also pledged support for Mac OS X, the next-generation evolution
of the Mac OS, expected to be available in fall of 1999. Demonstrating
the fast-track development cycle that's part of Mac OS X, Jobs showed
leading publishing solutions running on the new operating system.
