| Ten Steps To Better Computing Short version published in Ahlberg Auna's Tax ACCess Newsletter, July 23997. 1. Back Up, Back Up, Back Up! - The most important rule to safe computing is to keep a backup copy of all of your important computer files... preferably off your hard disc and on another media. Multiple backups may be prudent for sensitive files or important archives. A backup copy stored at location away from your computer is even better! 2. Practice Safe Computing - Like safe sex, safe computing means using the latest virus detection and eradication utilities. Always scan suspicious floppies, files and items you download from the internet. A computer virus can cause havoc to your computer and business! 3. Always Turn Your Computer On And Off In the Proper Way - Follow your computer manufacturer's recommended methods for powering up and turning off your computer and peripherals. Not doing so could cause nasty problems like hard disk crashes. 4. Keep An Emergency StartUp Disc - In case your hard drive fails to start your computer, a backup start up disc, either a floppy or CD ROM is a good thing to have around. In most cases your computer can start up from an alternative source and the problem on the main hard drive easily diagnosed and repaired. 5. Use a Surge Protector - Your computer hardware and peripherals are expensive and sensitive devices. A good surge suppressor protects your computer and related hardware from electric power spikes. Better models offer battery back-up so that you can save sensitive information and shut your computer down during a power blackout. 6. Keep Master Disks and CDs in Safe Place - You pay big money for your computer software. It is highly suggested that you keep the master disks in a safe place and run the software from legal backups copies (usually the working copy on your computer's hard disc). 7. Register Your Software - Whenever you buy a new software title, be sure to send in those registration cards. It only takes you a few minutes and registration entitles you to discounts on software upgrades and special bundle offers. 8. Go Online - It is highly recommended that you get on the internet. In today's fast changing computer world, the internet serves as a treasure trove of information and a source for the latest software updates. It is also practical for keeping in touch with distant friends, relatives and associates. 9. Read The Documentation! - Few people actually read this stuff. However you'd be amazed at what you can learn by reading the DOCS that come with your hardware and software. 10. Be Thorough Before Contacting Tech Support - Whatever your problem, try to figure it out first before calling the tech support or your computer consultant. But when you do, be sure to be as complete as possible in explaining your problem, noting version numbers of the software you are using, and the type of hardware you're running it on. |
