A great source of pride
to the Memphis Chapter and the Tennessee Division is Vista Grande,
the IAAP-funded Retirement Center in
Rio Rancho, New Mexico. The idea of a retirement center for secretaries was originated
with Margarette Bibb and Della Herring of the Memphis Chapter. Margarette's executive,
Colonel Roane Waring, cultivated the idea. Their dream started in 1947. In 1958, the Trust was
created for the purpose of acquiring, maintaining, and operating such a retirement
center. On April 23, 1972, it became a reality with the dedication of the Retirement
Center. In July 1974, it was fully occupied.
The Center sits on 11+ acres, has 166
apartments, a community building, infirmary, dining room, restaurant/kitchen, library,
laundry, recreational facilities, arts and crafts room, and a chapel. The chapel was built
by the Tennessee Division of IAAP in honor of Frances Jakes CPS, former Tennessee
Division and International President. The lounge at the Retirement Center is named in memory of Colonel Roane Waring.
Memphis Chapter's annual contribution to the Retirement Center Trust Fund is made in memory of
Margarette Bibb. The Center is now a six million dollar facility, and is the world's only
retirement center built for and funded by secretaries.
