In attendance:

From SpiderIsland: Rusty Tucker

Sysops: Bob Nunn, Jim Smith, Ken Sutherland, Michael Davidson, Jim Leary, Daniel O'Leary

Bob Nunn : Hey
Rusty Tucker hiya
mikael fredriksson : hi
Jim Smith : Hi
Rusty Tucker I had to take Nav Services support out, it's not ready for prime time :(
Bob Nunn : I never saw a problem, although I didn't like where it came up default.
Rusty Tucker I've decided to wait until they get a good version out, then add support. I don't need to go through another "Open Transport" at this point :)
Bob Nunn : Any other changes to TFUser b14?
Jim Smith : No bleading edge;<
Rusty Tucker nothing significant
Rusty Tucker right on, Nav will be cool. The 8.5 version will probably be good this fall.
Rusty Tucker did any but BN catch my "Frames" article?
Jim Smith : All my OT stuff is bad (Carbon). If you hear anything let me know, please.
Rusty Tucker I'm looking for some +/- minus feedback on that
Rusty Tucker If its useful, I'll put more "how to's" together.
Bob Nunn : Well I like em. Use most of the material most of the time. It is hard for me anyway to see all the applications of the materials.
Rusty Tucker I've been thinking that maybe we should move the Friday chat to Thursday, at lest until the end of summer.
Jim Smith : ok
Bob Nunn : Would be okay for me.
Rusty Tucker will make it easier to play hooky Fri afternoons :)
Bob Nunn : Can't blame you there would be tempting to me if we weren't so backed up.
Rusty Tucker OK - its a done deal then. I'll post a note to tf-annouce, if you'll adjust the web site that would be great
Bob Nunn : No problem.
Rusty Tucker any burning questions today?
Bob Nunn : Do you know the name of the company that sells Apple to schools?
Rusty Tucker not offhand
Bob Nunn : My wife has been approached to go to work for them out of Memphis.
Bob Nunn : I am hoping she gets it and they assign her some good equipment to demo.
Jim Leary joined the chat.
Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat Jim!
Bob Nunn : How do you make something more robust.
Rusty Tucker :) by making it less susceptible to bugs
Bob Nunn : Some type of force field? ;-)
Jim Leary : RT...Now that The web page is doing well thru TF including a new search and soon to have mailboxes, is there a way to instant message a client on the web page?
Rusty Tucker Jim L, do you still want to hack User Manager to let it add more access paths?
Jim Leary : yes!
Rusty Tucker There is a CINT resource in the User Manager application called "max_paths".
Michael Davidson joined the chat.
Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat Michael!
Rusty Tucker Use ResEdit to change it from 25 to 50.
Jim Leary : Oh I see, so I open UM with ResEdit. I was trying the access group
Rusty Tucker right, hopefully it won't come up in Hex ...
Jim Leary : thanks RT. I'll give it a try
Rusty Tucker 0032 is hex for 50
Rusty Tucker I'd strongly recommend taking the "redesign" path so that you can reduce the number of paths....
Jim Smith : RT: do he need to increase size of UM?
Rusty Tucker 25+ desktop options will be a little overwhelming
Rusty Tucker No, the app mem size can remain the same
Jim Leary : They are not all desktop options. I have to establish a path for every folder within the main structure and they exceed 25
Rusty Tucker JL- you can use "BIAP Chat" for web based chatting, its not anywhere near as nice as TF's chat, but it works.
Rusty Tucker Why do you need to do that?
Jim Leary : I only have 6 items on the opening desktop page
Rusty Tucker Once you set a path for an enclosing folder, the subfolders inherit its privs!
Jim Leary : I just like having the ability to chat with clients online. They are TFWin looking for something that I can help with
Jim Leary : Does that go for partitions?
Rusty Tucker it doesn't matter if its a partition or not.
Rusty Tucker any subfolder gets the privs of the main folder in its path
Jim Leary : Because I've established paths to the partition that contains folders that I have not made paths for and a couple folders are inaccessible to the client
Daniel O'Leary joined the chat.
Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat Daniel!
Michael Davidson : Jim, give RT an example of folder you want to set path for and he will show you easier way
Daniel O'Leary : Am here.
Jim Leary : DO...no sign of Ken
Rusty Tucker like in my setup I have a path set to "TeleFinder BBS", I don't need to make new paths for the subfolders in it.
Rusty Tucker Are they folders or aliases?
Daniel O'Leary : RT how'd you do relative paths in UM?
Jim Leary : Rusty, you have access to my BBS...perhaps when you find time you can visit with the TF User to see the set up
Michael Davidson : BBS Desktop:Macintosh:Files:Applications:Email:Eudora 1.5.1.sit
Jim Leary : aliases
Jim Leary : one folder...several aliases
Michael Davidson : if you give access to Macintosh:Files: then all categories within (Apps, Utils, etc.) have same privileges
Jim Leary : the main folder has one real folder which contains aliases and also within the main folder are several aliases
Jim Leary : is that the problem
Jim Leary : what do I do
Rusty Tucker If there is one folder that contains the targets of the aliases, it might be simpler to make a path to it, instead of each individual target
Daniel O'Leary : 5.6, as shipped had relative paths
Rusty Tucker DO - waddya mean?
Daniel O'Leary : does not RT.
Rusty Tucker ic
Daniel O'Leary : Jim's setup had targets on several partitions.
Michael Davidson : Correct RT, Jim make the path to the folder of aliases
Jim Leary : So since those target folders are in 5 partitions, you are saying that by making paths to those 5 will take care of everything within?
Rusty Tucker yep
Rusty Tucker EVERYTHING within, so be a little careful
Daniel O'Leary : Yes JL, that will do it. Make them "OK for aliases"
Jim Leary : ok thanks. I'll try it
Michael Davidson : have a public area on the volume and a private area if you want.
Daniel O'Leary : RT you need to upgrade the limit defaults on UM MAXPATHS too.
Rusty Tucker DO there's a little trick with the option key
Jim Leary : Now, what's the deal with getting a quick turnover on the mail keyword. The boss gave me the OK to put mailboxes on the web site
Daniel O'Leary : RT PUBLISH the trick.
Daniel O'Leary : JL, that is a Ken Question.3
Jim Leary : Ken seems to be hard to communicate with. We need the mailboxes early next week. I have the credit card number handy
Rusty Tucker "hold the option key down" there, its published :)
Michael Davidson : give me the credit card number Jim and I'll talk to Ken for you! :)
Jim Leary : Does he like to make money? seems he's rarely around to pay
Jim Leary : funny
Michael Davidson : for what and where RT? in UM
Daniel O'Leary : Ken's working on getting his inet link back up.
Rusty Tucker Its actually a private technique I added to make the demo version easy to install
Daniel O'Leary : things should improve after he does that.
nick404 joined the chat.
Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat nick 404!
Daniel O'Leary : RT, we could ALL use it.
nick 404 : Thanks Rusty
Rusty Tucker There are some tricks to partial paths
Jim Leary : well, if anyone miraculously bumps into Ken, tell him there's a sale waiting. He can get me at my SI mailbox (Jim Leary)
Rusty Tucker in access groups, they are relative to TeleFinder Server
Jim Leary left the chat.
Rusty Tucker c-ya Jim Leary
Daniel O'Leary : not to UM like mail?
Rusty Tucker in mail paths, they are relative to User Manager
Daniel O'Leary : Seems inconsistent...
Daniel O'Leary : That tripped me up with my script.
Rusty Tucker like I said, it was quick and dirty for the demo
nick 404 : So I thought there would be a great debate on MAC/PC between the Leary's'. What's up you two kiss and make up.
Daniel O'Leary : Now that I know it, I can make my new user script relative.
Jim Leary joined the chat.
Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat Jim!
Bob Nunn : RT, I thought Ken was only taking orders through Kagi since he has the tax difficulties etc. from the US. Isn't that right?
Rusty Tucker The script should see a Full path, no?
Daniel O'Leary : Very valuable...
Daniel O'Leary : RT I was trying to make it relative for exactly the same reason.
Jim Leary : whatever is the case, tell me where to go to get the keyword for the PI
nick404 left the chat.
Rusty Tucker c-ya nick 404
Daniel O'Leary : If the script is rel., then it is easier for sysops to use because I do not know the name of their hard disk and and setup for servers and mail.
Michael Davidson : but you do need the full path someway DO
Daniel O'Leary : mailpath I can get from UM, but absolute path for the script is unknown.
Daniel O'Leary : No MD, should not be needed.
Michael Davidson : you can get the path to the applet using AppleScript
Daniel O'Leary : Should be relative to where it is executed.
Bob Nunn : I ordered mine through kagi.com and got quick response from Ken after I paid for the program. There are instructions and a form in the archive on how to do it. Unless something changed....
Jim Smith : JL: Ken_Sutherland@highlander.net.uk is his email address, ask him for key.
Michael Davidson : the path of me
Daniel O'Leary : script and template should ask UM where email folders are.
Daniel O'Leary : then copy em in.
Michael Davidson : ic
Rusty Tucker DO, where do you see a relative path?
Michael Davidson : And UM will give you the full path I assume
Rusty Tucker the new user script?
Daniel O'Leary : Saw them in your Access groups that shipped with 5.6.
Michael Davidson : so, yea, where do you need relative path
Daniel O'Leary : That is where I will use them.
Daniel O'Leary : in the add user script.
Rusty Tucker hmm.
Daniel O'Leary : place the pack where UM is .
Daniel O'Leary : then let it figure out ALL the rest.
Rusty Tucker That should be fixed to be a full path.
Daniel O'Leary : HD could be named anything!
Ken Sutherland joined the chat.
Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat Ken!
Daniel O'Leary : cannot predict that... Need rel. paths.
Michael Davidson : If you want to create or move files, you need to get the absolute path to the Mail folder
Rusty Tucker from Daryl...
Rusty Tucker Make that 4 days up & running! And that's with over a million hits a month! I'm so happy, I could cry :) Daryl
Daniel O'Leary : Ken Jim Leary needs keys to the car!
Ken Sutherland left the chat.
Rusty Tucker c-ya Ken Sutherland
Michael Davidson : it's easy enough to get the full path to the UM Mail folder
Ken Sutherland joined the chat.
Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat Ken!
Jim Leary : see what I mean!
Rusty Tucker DO - I mean UM should be reporting a full path/alias to the script
Jim Leary : oh ok I thought he ran \
Bob Nunn : You still using Kagi for orders aren't you Ken.
Ken Sutherland : Hi all
Ken Sutherland : yes
Ken Sutherland : bob
Daniel O'Leary : RT, it does for mail folders, but has to figure out where template is.
Jim Leary : How do I get the key?
Daniel O'Leary : was going to stick it on the "config " folder.
Jim Smith2 joined the chat.
Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat Jim!
Ken Sutherland : JL, need sysop name, bbs name and TF serial no.
Daniel O'Leary : that is where all the common stuff should be anyway...
Michael Davidson : and will UM tell you where the config folder is?
Daniel O'Leary : should not be strewn about.
Daniel O'Leary : just my thought on it.
Ken Sutherland : Rusty , had any further thoughts on my request for automatic opening of bold file/conf areas and mail folder
Daniel O'Leary : next best place is in the same folder as UM.
Michael Davidson : or what TF app will tell you absolute path to config folder
Michael Davidson : Who here uses QuickDNS Pro and who uses other DNS software?
Daniel O'Leary : I use MacDNS and a separate DNS on a Unix server.
Rusty Tucker Find TeleFinder Server, and that's where the config folder is.
Daniel O'Leary : MacDNS is SLOW!
Michael Davidson : Have any problems adding commands to the MacDNS host file DO?
Daniel O'Leary : Adding commands???
Michael Davidson : I need to add some PTR commands to the host file, but MacDNS doesn't allow it thru interface, but supposedly does (might) allow it by editing the host file
Michael Davidson : by thru interface, I meant by way of its graphic user interface
Daniel O'Leary : OK, PTR DATA... not commands.
Michael Davidson : sorry, yes
Daniel O'Leary : Thought you wanted to hack the program to do more...
Michael Davidson : have you done such with Mac DNS
Michael Davidson : can you ask TeleFinder Server where it is ?
Michael Davidson : you could find it, assuming there is only one TF Server on disk
Daniel O'Leary : MD, I had problems with MacDNS not allowing me to specify hosts at the same level as the domain.
Jim Smith left the chat.
Rusty Tucker c-ya Jim Smith
Michael Davidson : you don't do that usually DO
Daniel O'Leary : I had my reasons MD.
Rusty Tucker There's a way to get a programs location if its running.
Michael Davidson : so you want a machine to be named yourdomain.com
Daniel O'Leary : How so RT?
Michael Davidson : Yes, on the running part RT
Rusty Tucker I'd have to search around to give you the details.
Ken Sutherland : Rusty , had any further thoughts on my request for automatic opening of bold file/conf areas and mail folder
Michael Davidson : get processes might start it
Daniel O'Leary : Cool. It will make my new user script much better.
Daniel O'Leary : What did you think of the script when you tested it here RT?
Daniel O'Leary : As Test User 1.
Daniel O'Leary : grin.
Bob Nunn : Ken it would have to be an option. My users would hang up before all the folders got open.
Michael Davidson : I have some code for that I think...I saw if Emailer was running then I think I got its path
Bob Nunn : Now givem a text file showing what's new would be cool.
Michael Davidson : you can even make sure the app is of correct version
Jim Smith2 left the chat.
Rusty Tucker c-ya Jim Smith2
Daniel O'Leary : The best part of the script is that common stuff is copied as an alias rather than a file.
Rusty Tucker KS - I think something like that should be handled by a client side Apple Script, not wired into the program.
Michael Davidson : Anybody else use MacDNS?
Daniel O'Leary : And I tested the delete protection too RT... It still works cause the target of the alias is Read only.
Ken Sutherland : Rusty, that's the easy option, as usual you exclude the PC customers
Ken Sutherland : unless you can add AppleScript support to windows
Rusty Tucker talk to BG about PC scripting :)
Daniel O'Leary : it is call BATCH files.
Michael Davidson : do that for windows will ya RT? :)
Daniel O'Leary : Best is server side with IM's.
Rusty Tucker yeah, maybe tomorrow afternoon!
Ken Sutherland : really?
Michael Davidson : have it ready for Beta first thing Monday morning...
Rusty Tucker right after the monkeys fly out of my....
Daniel O'Leary : Use a server script that runs after connection is made.
Rusty Tucker Frontier is running on Windows now, I don't know if it can script any programs tho.
Michael Davidson : there ya go
Ken Sutherland : yup, yup, yup, yup, yup, yup, yup
Daniel O'Leary : variable is user name, time of last login...
Ken Sutherland : that would be an idea
Ken Sutherland : nope, try the user access instead
Michael Davidson : gotta go guys
Michael Davidson left the chat.
Rusty Tucker c-ya Michael Davidson
Bob Nunn : Me too save me the log RT. See you next Tues. Then THURS. next week.
Rusty Tucker will do
Bob Nunn left the chat.
Rusty Tucker c-ya Bob Nunn
Rusty Tucker Right no more Friday chats. They will be on Thursday from now on.
Daniel O'Leary : WHAT!!!!!!!
Rusty Tucker Still need to get an Evening chat too. Maybe should be 5 or 6 p.m. on Thurs.
Ken Sutherland : Rusty, could server side scripting be expanded?
Rusty Tucker dint mean to rock ur world DO
Daniel O'Leary : YEAH!!!!
Daniel O'Leary : go get it Ken!
Daniel O'Leary : RT, I need to know this so I can schedule my off time around it.
Ken Sutherland : fixing hard drives
Ken Sutherland : oops
Daniel O'Leary : Shuddup Ken.
Daniel O'Leary : Buying new ones.
Rusty Tucker you get tf-annouce, right?
Ken Sutherland : am jealous
Rusty Tucker I'll post the change there.
Daniel O'Leary : Am prolly not going to get the G3 yet... is the same cost as a Jacuzzi...
Rusty Tucker I think 5p is a good time too.
Rusty Tucker :))
Ken Sutherland : you mean the wife has been thinking again
Daniel O'Leary : prolly get a pair of drives, a Jaz drive, and an ISDN.
Daniel O'Leary : No she says go get it.
Daniel O'Leary : It is me that is thinking about the other stuff.
Rusty Tucker DO's the one thinking about S*X
Daniel O'Leary : My wife does that too, RT.
Rusty Tucker :)
Daniel O'Leary : Was very distracting a few moments ago....
Daniel O'Leary : you can tell when my typing is really hosed.
Daniel O'Leary : grin.
Rusty Tucker Hmmm!
Rusty Tucker ON that NOTE, time to close out for today.
Ken Sutherland : night night
Daniel O'Leary : O.K. It is back on their heads time for me!
Rusty Tucker see ya all next week
