In attendance:

From Spider Island: Rusty Tucker,

Sysops: Jim Smith, Bill Gram-Reefer, Donald McHose, Bob Nunn, Jim DeHaven, Michael Davidson, Dick Grable, Ken Sutherland, mikael fredriksson, Daryl Hansen,

Jim Smith: < < joined the chat> >

Bob Nunn: < < joined the chat> >

Bill Gram-Reefer: < < joined the chat> >

Donald McHose: < < joined the chat> >

Bob Nunn: Going to buy some FileMaker Inc. stock?

Jim DeHaven: < < joined the chat> >

Bill Gram-Reefer: They just got marginalized big time

Donald McHose: buy something that doesn't even have a web page ?

Donald McHose: ;-)\

Bill Gram-Reefer: Half their profit last year was from OS8 Sales

Bob Nunn: Bothers me. Think FileMaker is a good program and well worth the price. I hope it doesn't lose momentum but how can it not?

Donald McHose: I would think that the "A" powers would let them "FileMaker staff " still run their own show

Rusty Tucker: < < joined the chat> >

Donald McHose: Why screw with something that works and makes $

Bob Nunn: I hope so and I hope they make more inroads into the windows market. Nice having a good program on both platforms.

Bob Nunn: We were talking about FileMaker Inc. etc.

Bob Nunn: Have any of you been on MacNexus's Web BBS?

Donald McHose: No?

Donald McHose: What is up?

Bob Nunn: I am very impressed. I hear they use a lot of Frontier scripts to do some of that.

Michael Davidson: < < joined the chat> >

Michael Davidson: hi

Dick Grable: < < joined the chat> >

Rusty Tucker: I'll be releasing the "change password" plugin later today.

Michael Davidson: Hey guys, I have to leave in a few minutes but I have a couple of questions?

Rusty Tucker: sure MD

Michael Davidson: I'm getting a cable modem and they are giving me only one IP#. and they want to charge me $10 a month if I have a domain name and use their DNS.

Bob Nunn: Don't complain.....

Michael Davidson: Should I use MacDNS and save $10 a month...if so, what else do I need to run and is it worth the hassle

Bill Gram-Reefer: what a rip...told you these guys are gonna nickel and dime anyone who wants to publish not just suck

Rusty Tucker: To do your own domain you'll need secondary and primary servers.

Michael Davidson: Do I need to run anything besides TF and MacDNS?

Rusty Tucker: With 1 IP that's gonna be tough to do

Michael Davidson: I must have secondary servers?

Rusty Tucker: for DNS,yes

Bill Gram-Reefer: 1 IP # almost forces you to go the VIG route

Michael Davidson: They charge me $10 month for each IP# (up to 4)...used to get 4 for free

Michael Davidson: They forbid masking and probably VIG

Michael Davidson: (used to not forbid it)

Rusty Tucker: I knew I didn't want my cable co. as my ISP :)

Rusty Tucker: hell, I don't even want them as my cable co!

Michael Davidson: Ok, so if I had 2 IP#s could I sneak by RT

Dick Grable: < < left the chat> >

Michael Davidson: I hate that I have to pay $25 for cable TV that I don't want

Rusty Tucker: Technically, they want to charge $10/ month for each extra TV too, so I am not at all surprised

Donald McHose: Boy is that true ! Went DSS in a fit two years ago.

Bill Gram-Reefer: grrrrr

Michael Davidson: but for $65 a month I get high speed access 24/7 and one IP#...isn't that about as good as I can get?

Bill Gram-Reefer: how much was the modem and the setup fee?

Rusty Tucker: Sounds good for surfing.

Michael Davidson: modem is free and setup is $25-$50

Bill Gram-Reefer: is it synchronous? hi-speed two way? or is it hi speed down channel and your up speed at 33.6?

Michael Davidson: don't even want to surf...just have a TF web site is all

Michael Davidson: yes BGR

Michael Davidson: 2 way (hybrid cable)

Bill Gram-Reefer: yes synchronous? at what speed?

Michael Davidson: just second on the speed issue

Donald McHose: Q:

Donald McHose: Is any body having great success with the mail -pi on a multi-access group server?

Bill Gram-Reefer: MD what would they charge you to map another domain name to your one IP address

Ken Sutherland: < < joined the chat> >

Ken Sutherland: hiya

Michael Davidson: I don't know BGR. also, about the speed, i can't remember ...I think its just less than a 128 ISDN

Bob Nunn: Hey Ken!

Donald McHose: HELLO KEN !

Bill Gram-Reefer: shoot, I thought your were talking 10 Mbps...

Rusty Tucker: Daryl at Maui seems to be DM

Bob Nunn: DM?

Rusty Tucker: == Donald McHose

Donald McHose: RT: thanks

Michael Davidson: here's the speed they quote: Cable modem speeds range from 500Kbps to 10Mbps

Donald McHose: Ken I am still getting errors for the mail _PI .Users see the mail file but cannot access it ?They get an error message.

Bill Gram-Reefer: OK, that sounds a lot better than ISDN, then

Michael Davidson: So, where do I go to get info like RT telling me that "To do your own domain you'll need secondary and primary servers."

Michael Davidson: Is there online info?

Ken Sutherland: brb

Michael Davidson: well, I'm sure I'll never see 10Mbps

Bob Nunn: If they point to you and you aren't using a router which requires a number and you are not running a DNS server you can run with just the one, right guys.

Donald McHose: I know a cable user in Main that would fight to lose his.He says cable is the only way. He pays $50.00/month for everything

Donald McHose: brb

Michael Davidson: Maybe, they could be my secondary server...is that possible RT? (or would I be the secondary server) Shows how much I need a source of info

Ken Sutherland: DM, its a cookie problem

Ken Sutherland: we are working on it

Bill Gram-Reefer: Rusty, adobe charges $2 per minute for support!

Rusty Tucker: me too - starting now. :)

Michael Davidson: o no, I'm going to go broke

Rusty Tucker: You'll have to think about it from now on. Rusty or the 900# girls....

Donald McHose: KS: What is a Cookie problem?

Bob Nunn: Perhaps someone needs to offer a discount support service. I would do it for half that and not answer your questions equally as well.

Ken Sutherland: sorry DM, its kids time

Ken Sutherland: brb

Rusty Tucker: DM- he means that there is a bug in Web Mail they are working to fix.

Donald McHose: I'll do it and let my 12 yr. old fem. just babble.

Donald McHose: RT: THANKS

Bob Nunn: In the south here we define a cookie problem is when weevils get in the jar.

Bill Gram-Reefer: BN hahah

Donald McHose: I hear ya ! ;-)

Rusty Tucker: Cookie probs seem better than CREAM PIE probs :)

Donald McHose: )) . I got blamed for that at work.

Michael Davidson: Dumb question: Can I run TF Web Server without using my own domain name but have a web site using my domain name point to my TF Web site?

Rusty Tucker: MD- I think you'll need to pay them the $10/ mo for DNS

Michael Davidson: Netscape cookie

Bob Nunn: That really is a good price even with the extra 10.

Jim DeHaven: BN--I was just looking at the Mac Nexus site--I think they use tango

Michael Davidson: simpler dumb question: CAN I run TF Web Server without using my domain name (using cableispdomain.com/`davidsonm

Rusty Tucker: BTW - I'm working on a plug-in chat will make a chart of server requests per hour for the last 24 hrs

Rusty Tucker: The chart is out put as a JPEG image

Rusty Tucker: just another goody for the bag of tricks

Jim DeHaven: I had a brief cardiac--I thought you started to say plug in CHAT

Donald McHose: RT:Nice I can use that.....JH that would be better )

Rusty Tucker: MD you only need a IP address to run the servers

Rusty Tucker: I've got to get into Java mode for that one.

Michael Davidson: I might have to pay em the $10. Thanks everybody for your help. Gotta run. Thanks Rusty...I owe you more than $2. :) bye

Rusty Tucker: OK! I'll put in on the books

Michael Davidson: < < left the chat> >

mikael fredriksson: < < joined the chat> >

mikael fredriksson: Hi!

Rusty Tucker: I'm sketching the chart out now at http://explorer.spiderisland.com/chart.html

Rusty Tucker: This has 'dummy' data and lacks labels.

Rusty Tucker: But it should give you an idea of the layout.

Ken Sutherland: chart?

Jim DeHaven: ooooohh

Rusty Tucker: TeleFinder keeps a scrolling total of hits per hour for each of the last 24hrs

Rusty Tucker: So I will put this info in a graph that you can look up at anytime

Donald McHose: My turn to get the kids, KS send me a note explaining this cookie thingy. Thanks Don

Donald McHose: < < left the chat> >

Bob Nunn: I like it!

Ken Sutherland: me2

mikael fredriksson: and me 2 2 ;)

Bob Nunn: Will you have that up tonite you think?

Rusty Tucker: I hope to have something ready this PM

Rusty Tucker: it's really pretty close now

Rusty Tucker: Last nite I made a Plug-in to generate Mandelbrot sets in a JPEG just to test with

Rusty Tucker: I always like them :)

Rusty Tucker: you can see that one at http://explorer.spiderisland.com/mandel.spml

Rusty Tucker: You can get a really wild view with these coordinates:

Jim DeHaven: ahhh

Rusty Tucker: zoom 9600%, xorg -1.4, yorg -.0013, width 800, height 800

Ken Sutherland: rusty, qt, can you remember how Steve Hawkins pasted it into a settings file

Jim DeHaven: how about a random generation of coordinates?

Rusty Tucker: That would be fun!

Bob Nunn: Now that's fun....

Jim Smith: < < joined the chat> >

Bill Gram-Reefer: < < joined the chat> >

Jim DeHaven: < < joined the chat> >

Rusty Tucker: < < joined the chat> >

Ken Sutherland: < < joined the chat> >

mikael fredriksson: < < joined the chat> >

Bob Nunn: < < joined the chat> >

Bill Gram-Reefer: well boyz and qerlz, see you next week, same bat time same bat channel

Rusty Tucker: c ya BGR

Bill Gram-Reefer: < < left the chat> >

Rusty Tucker: The Mandel.spml file is pretty cool

Rusty Tucker: It takes the CGI params, and passes them to the plug-in, and echos them in the form.

Jim DeHaven: Rusty--Internet explorer for PC's has the option to turn off http 1.1 but the mac does not--are you or anyone here aware of how to turn this off for a mac?

Rusty Tucker: If they are missing, it fills in defaults.

Rusty Tucker: I don't know if its even supported on mac

Rusty Tucker: ^http 1.1

Jim DeHaven: hmmmm

Rusty Tucker: ok, the explorer server is back up now

Jim DeHaven: well IE for the mac 4.0 has trouble connecting with SI so i assumed.....

Rusty Tucker: what server version are you using?

Rusty Tucker: I haven't tried IE4 mac out yet

Jim DeHaven: I am still using 5.5 rusty

Jim DeHaven: I have not changed yo 5.6 because of the problem we spoke of

Rusty Tucker: Crashing on realm changes?

Jim DeHaven: yes rusty--that's the one

Bob Nunn: Mine does that but I have traced it to a plug in I am running.

Rusty Tucker: which one BN?

Jim DeHaven: OH???? a possible solution?

Bob Nunn: The Chat PI

Jim DeHaven: No--I am not running that plug in on the problem machine

Rusty Tucker: what PI's are u running?

Jim DeHaven: finger mail wsapi usermanager

Daryl Hansen: hmmm. That's not too bad. It's better than the alternative.

Jim DeHaven: perhaps I should disable them and see if one is causing the problem

Rusty Tucker: sounds good

Rusty Tucker: also get the 5.6.2b3 so that I can compare your results to the current code

Rusty Tucker: + a Macsbugs stdlog when it crashes, thanks.

Jim DeHaven: OK--I tried it last night it also crashed but I will do the plug in thing tonite and do the macsbug log

Ken Sutherland: brb

Rusty Tucker: Jim's was crashing if a user logged into one realm

Rusty Tucker: then linked to a page in a different realm, the server would crash before

Jim DeHaven: into one realm but into (sequentially) two different access groups

Rusty Tucker: it could send the new login request

Daryl Hansen: I'm using "keep it up" now and it works very well for auto quits, but not for freezes.

Bob Nunn: When I need to make changes I disable the pi's quit TFS for a second and restart. I then make changes, quit TFS and then re-enable my PI's and start again. Just takes a minute.

Ken Sutherland: anyone know what's going to be in System 8.2 yet

Jim DeHaven: bug fixes for 8.0

Rusty Tucker: lots of new code from what I here

Rusty Tucker: probably means lots of new bugs :(

Daryl Hansen: < < joined the chat> >

Ken Sutherland: MauiMail is here

Rusty Tucker: Hi Daryl!

Bob Nunn: macosrumours has a good piece on it ken.

Daryl Hansen: Aloha Rusty!

mikael fredriksson: < < left the chat> >

Ken Sutherland: i have d9

Rusty Tucker: We've getting the "Pineapple Express" today, and for a few more days too :(

Ken Sutherland: ?

mikael fredriksson: < < joined the chat> >

Rusty Tucker: Cold Front out of Alaska mixing with a lot of warm moist air from Hawaii

Rusty Tucker: AKA - "El Nino"

Daryl Hansen: Rusty, thanks for the tip about the missing redirect.spml file!

Rusty Tucker: u bet

Rusty Tucker: Daryl is running "keep it up" and a few utils like it.

Rusty Tucker: Didn't I hear about some problems with that?

Ken Sutherland: u mean it works

Daryl Hansen: U'h oh shouldn't be talking about the weather

Daryl Hansen: It works for me, and very well!

Rusty Tucker: I don't know. I remember one of those Inits -caused- as many crashes as it restarted.

Ken Sutherland: auto boot 1.5

Daryl Hansen: The readme file said that it has been updated to work with 8.1

Rusty Tucker: ahh ok

Daryl Hansen: Auto boot 1.6 runs, but I'm not sure I like the idea of an INIT

Rusty Tucker: We need a Server Utility FAQ

Ken Sutherland: great

Ken Sutherland: that will help when tf server bombs out with those type 2 errors

Ken Sutherland: i might ad i have not had them recently though

Rusty Tucker: 0 bombs for me running 5.6 -- knock on wood

Daryl Hansen: Right now I would piss on a spark plug if I thought it would help.

Ken Sutherland: will tell him

Ken Sutherland: ouch

Jim DeHaven: rusty are you selling that Mandelbrot generator?

Jim DeHaven: I will piss on a spark plug too if I can get it

Rusty Tucker: Keep sending the Logs Daryl! Sooner or later it will make sense.

Daryl Hansen: Rusty, the File upload capability. Does that just send files as attachments or separate files?

Ken Sutherland: what's rusty's favorite saying, 'Make me an offer"

Bob Nunn: I think it kept me off line more than it kept me on. It would kill me during lollipop and stuff.

Ken Sutherland: 8-)

Daryl Hansen: Yes, I will keep collecting log files :)

Rusty Tucker: I'll put it up tonite as a standalone too.

Daryl Hansen: Great thanks!

Jim DeHaven: cool--thanks

Daryl Hansen: Who wrote Suzie?

Rusty Tucker: Chris S.

Ken Sutherland: Chris

Rusty Tucker: A long time ago.....

Daryl Hansen: That is a fantastic app!

Daryl Hansen: Hats off to Chris!

Bob Nunn: I always thought Autoboot it killed me more than it helped. I like my PowerKey pro a lot. It does reset sometimes unnecessarily but it always resets after a crash and you can call it.

Daryl Hansen: < < left the chat> >

Rusty Tucker: I'm going to add PowerKey support to TF.

Rusty Tucker: They've sent me a unit to test with.

Rusty Tucker: Hopefully the built-in support will prevent the erroneous restarts

Bob Nunn: Fantastic!!

Ken Sutherland: a sys7 load detector would be good

Rusty Tucker: What do yo mean Ken?

Bob Nunn: I have a hunch that Mail Server may be the culprit about the surprise PowerKey restarts but its just a hunch.

Ken Sutherland: Bob, you said the PowerKey didn't work correctly when a sys6 app was running due to excessive system hog, correct

Ken Sutherland: AKA MacKennel etc...

Bob Nunn: Not sure about sys6, but Norton kills its for sure if it runs too long.

Ken Sutherland: ie if something sucks down hard it could look like a hang

Bob Nunn: I can make it happen anytime with Norton. It just does it randomly with everything else working. I am running the max 1020 second delay also. It really is the way there software detects I expect.

Jim DeHaven: I gotta get back to work--see ya

Ken Sutherland: was talking to PowerKey, yesterday, am going to look into developing a UK version

Rusty Tucker: TeleFinder will need to get sometime. I was thinking about a 1 or 2 minute period between tickles.

Rusty Tucker: If it doesn't get CPU for that amount of time, PowerKey will assume its crashed.

Bob Nunn: Sounds reasonable to me.

Jim DeHaven: < < left the chat> >

Rusty Tucker: Any last q's before we wrap it?

Jim Smith: BN: a while back you told me to get rid of the thumbnail on graphic files, How do you do that?

Bob Nunn: JPEG view 3.3 click off the option boxes. Makes files really small.

Jim Smith: What about the preview?

Rusty Tucker: see yall next week!

Ken Sutherland: < < left the chat> >

Rusty Tucker: < < left the chat> >

mikael fredriksson: < < left the chat> >

Bob Nunn: See ya next week!
