Text of TeleFinder Chat from Friday, Halloween! October 31, 1997 11 AM PST.

In attendance:

From Spider Island: Rusty Tucker,

Sysops: Jim Smith, Jonathan Paisley, Ken Sutherland, mikael fredriksson , Kevin Shearon, Donald McHose, Bob Nunn, Daniel O'Leary, Michael Davidson

Rusty Tucker: hola!

Ken Sutherland: it works,

Rusty Tucker: 2 new serv ers coming today!

Rusty Tucker: Mail Server: fixes a bug handling deformed "To" headers

Rusty Tucker: Web Server: supports IP Multihoming!

Jim Smith: Key: When/how do I pay for Online Assistant (OAT), my key ran out again, which is a pain.

Jonathan Paisley: ooh!

Ken Sutherland: i am not taking payments until it is finished, hold on and i will send you a password

Rusty Tucker: OT 1.3b6 is in the "Club Beta" area ( thanks Mikael! )

mikael fredriksson: Rusty, isn't it time for a "small" press release about the new beta with IP Multihoming!

Rusty Tucker: The version I got on the Developer CD was only a debug version.

Jim Smith: Will it ever be finished 8)

Jonathan Paisley: I didn't realize 1.3b6 was available for public beta

Jonathan Paisley: Is that version of OT a non-debug version?

Rusty Tucker: its not Jon.

Rusty Tucker: Available to developers only

mikael fredriksson: I fount OT on spidernet in Holland

Jonathan Paisley: so surely you shouldn't have it online

Rusty Tucker: Club Beta is not a public site

Jonathan Paisley: but it's not restricted to apple developers

Rusty Tucker: My understanding is that you can distribute to key customers/beta testers under non-disclosure ( ie Club Beta ) for testing purposes.

Jonathan Paisley: oh

Rusty Tucker: Wouldn't be much of a test other wise

Rusty Tucker: Yes, as soon as I make the new feature available on the public beta, we can make a general announcement

Rusty Tucker: Probably next week.

Jonathan Paisley: so is that version that's online a debug version?

Ken Sutherland: Rusty. i take it you have been spring cleaning file base?

Rusty Tucker: The IP Multihoming doesn't work _exactly_ as I would have liked.

Rusty Tucker: A given thread needs to be bound to a specific address.

mikael fredriksson: Will you only release to the club beta today?

Kevin Shearon: Is there a new release of TF or something coming (just entered and missed the beginning of the discussion)?

Rusty Tucker: No, TF server will be in the regular area.

Jonathan Paisley: Rusty, I have a Q regarding MIME type mapping in the web server

Rusty Tucker: rusty tucker: 2 new serv ers coming today!

rusty tucker: Mail Server: fixes a bug handling deformed "To" headers

rusty tucker: Web Server: supports IP Multihoming!

Rusty Tucker: ga Jon

Jonathan Paisley: If I have a file with no extension (eg a jpeg picture), I want to be able to get the server to tell the client it's a image/jpeg by looking at the mac file type

Jonathan Paisley: I thought this would be possible with Internet Config, but it doesn't seem to work

Rusty Tucker: TeleFinder maps based on extension only

Rusty Tucker: needs to be ".jpg" or ".jpeg"

mikael fredriksson: Let me know when I can send a mail about the IP Multihoming support to MacinTouch and others!

Rusty Tucker: u bet

Jonathan Paisley: If I make a plugin that registers itself with no extension, but 'JPEG' '* ' file type/creator, will that get used?

Rusty Tucker: Ken - I bombed the files Tuesday.

Jonathan Paisley: and if so, will it get used *after* normal files with .jpg extension?

Ken Sutherland: nice and clean, and fast

Kevin Shearon: What is IP Multihoming?

Rusty Tucker: yes, handlers and Plug-ins ( really the same sort of thing ) check extension and type

Rusty Tucker: Kevin you can have more than one IP addressed to a single computer

Jonathan Paisley: Could you add file type mapping for normal files too? that would be quite handy...

Kevin Shearon: kind of like Proxy servers?

Rusty Tucker: with the web server, you'll be able to set up x threads for 199.35.3.99 and y threads for 199.35.3.100

Kevin Shearon: or dynamic ip resolution?

Rusty Tucker: .99 and .100 are then served from separate file bases

Rusty Tucker: Its like "virtual hosting"

Ken Sutherland: for all to know, the Umax Apus2000 (same as Apple's 6400) has poor serial speed, it cant handle anything above 38400, time to give keyspan a call 8-)

Kevin Shearon: sounds good thanks for the clarification

Rusty Tucker: except based on the IP address being connected to, not the domain name in the "host header"

Kevin Shearon: Rusty, are you selling many TF packages simply as web servers. And if you aren't why don't you have a separate price for TF for those who just want to use it as a web server?

Rusty Tucker: Also OT 1.3 is supposed to have the 1.2 "speed" bug fixed.

Rusty Tucker: I have not confirmed this yet

Jonathan Paisley: rusty: Is the version of OT1.3 that's online a debug version?

Rusty Tucker: not debug

Jonathan Paisley: kool

mikael fredriksson: My work computer feels a loot faster using internet with OT1.3

Rusty Tucker: the debug version is very lame - constantly jumps into macs bugs

Jonathan Paisley: yah, I have 1.3b6 debug, but didn't want to install it because its a debug version

Rusty Tucker: BTE - I'm playing with a new homepage for SI, you can preview it at /test.spml

Rusty Tucker: I'm looking to get a streamlined site. Make it easy to get to the most wanted into

Jonathan Paisley: it's all yellow!

Rusty Tucker: a little red to :)

Jonathan Paisley: yeah

mikael fredriksson: It looks cool!

Rusty Tucker: Red and Yellow are the TeleFinder Colors ( + blue )

Rusty Tucker: I'm redoing the "download" and "product" pages too. I think I'll leave those with white BG for readability

Rusty Tucker: I used "Dreamweaver PR1" to edit the pages ( + BBEdit )

Rusty Tucker: Its a little slow, but a pretty good editor and produces much better code than I got from PageMill

Rusty Tucker: It also does not change existing code when you edit.

Donald McHose: That's a sell point.Home page corrupts the heck out stuff to be edited.

Rusty Tucker: Here's how TF's Multi-homing works:

Ken Sutherland: what about cyber studio?

Rusty Tucker: You configure it in the "Server Setup" page in Web Settings

Rusty Tucker: right where you put domain name, Port#, and num threads

Rusty Tucker: now you can also specify "IP Address" , path to web space, check Host Headers and support personal web sites

Rusty Tucker: If you put 0.0.0.0 in IP address, it will listen for connects to any local address

Rusty Tucker: if you put a path for web space, this will override the default web space location

Rusty Tucker: if you turn off "check host headers" TF won't do virtual hosting based on the host header domain name

Rusty Tucker: if you turn off "personal web sites" personal web sites won't be accessible via that IP address.

Rusty Tucker: The idea is to let you set up a multihomed site so that it will appear to be a totally separate site

Rusty Tucker: There are certain global settings

Rusty Tucker: The realms affect all sites

Rusty Tucker: the Plug-ins are active for all sites

Rusty Tucker: Directory mapping is active for all sites

Rusty Tucker: Setting up Multiple IPs for your computer requires editing a text file, the TCP-IP control panel does not have an interface for this.

Rusty Tucker: here's what my own "IP Secondary Addresses" file looks like:

Rusty Tucker:

;1. configuring the TCP/IP Control Panel for manual addressing, and

;2. by creating a text file with the required name, "IP Secondary Addresses",

; and placing this file into the Preferences folder.

;Each secondary address entry must be prefixed by "ip=". Each subnet mask entry must be prefixed by

;"sm=". Each router address entry must be prefixed by "rt=". An example of the contents of the IP

;Secondary Addresses file follows.

; 'ip=' for ip address, 'sm=' subnet mask, 'rt=' router address

; Note: no space in 'ip=17.201.22.200'

;

; IP address Subnet Mask router addresses

;----------- ----------- ----------------

ip=199.35.3.200 sm=255.255.255.0 rt=199.35.3.1

ip=1199.35.3.201 sm=255.255.255.0 rt=199.35.3.1

ip=199.35.3.202 sm=255.255.255.0 rt=199.35.3.1

Jonathan Paisley: u have an extra 1 in there

Rusty Tucker: :)

Rusty Tucker: didn't;' try that address

Donald McHose: Is it possible to multihome the mail server? Hey I had to ask.Its a learning thing.

Kevin Shearon: Rusty what's the domain name for email on SI bbs?

mikael fredriksson: I think that the next thing for mail server is to get it to handle people (more than one) with the same name but with different domains

Rusty Tucker: you can try 199.25.3.10, and 199.35.3.200

Rusty Tucker: I don't have any plans to add Multihoming to the Mail Server

Donald McHose: O.K

Rusty Tucker: oops 199.35.3.10

Rusty Tucker: Those addresses are both on my own Mac

Rusty Tucker: @spiderisland.com, is that what you mean Kevin?

Kevin Shearon: yes thank you

Rusty Tucker: Mikael, that would require multiple TeleUsers databases

Rusty Tucker: might get a little hairy, might fit in nicely with Web Multihoming though

mikael fredriksson: or that you add the domain to user names in the user list

Ken Sutherland: change user group relevant to domain maybe

Rusty Tucker: You really want the "outgoing domain" tagged to user name, does incoming matter?

Ken Sutherland: nope

Ken Sutherland: we use oat to filter both incoming and outgoing anyway

Bob Nunn: How many IP address do you use on your server Rusty?

mikael fredriksson: In and out going is of the same importance

Rusty Tucker: www.spiderisland.com has only 1 address now -> .99

Rusty Tucker: I'm only running OT 1.3 on my own machine for now

Bob Nunn: Got my ASCEND Pipeline 85 and my ISDN line ordered. Should be up in about 3 weeks at a little faster clip. 427 page manual.

Rusty Tucker: For incoming I think the MX records take care of just about everything, don't they? Unless you want John@spiderisland.com to be not found if addressed to @otherlocaldomain.com

Rusty Tucker: :)

Donald McHose: forget that , Nuclear science is easier Bob

Bob Nunn: Glad I got a friendly ISP. I can tell ya that.

mikael fredriksson: Yes, what I want is that John@spiderisland.com and John@@otherlocaldomain.com not to be the same person on inbound mail (and outgoing if you use TFU)

Donald McHose: Fellow bat shift workers are making noise, gots ta run Take care all

Rusty Tucker: lates

Ken Sutherland: nite all

Rusty Tucker: server kicks me out after an hour :) must mean that our times up for today

Jim Smith: Have nice one all

Bob Nunn: Rusty one last quick one?

Rusty Tucker: Check the server this PM for the new stuff, or tomorrow if you'll be trick-or-treating :)

Rusty Tucker: GA

mikael fredriksson: ;-)

Bob Nunn: You may have already covered. If I change to the latest beta server, I have a lot of aliases will i have trouble?

Rusty Tucker: that depends

Rusty Tucker: where do the aliases point?

Bob Nunn: I have the OAT program so many are going to UD areas. I also have some in Conf. and I have a few Web Page aliases and crossed mail boxes

Rusty Tucker: If you have "all files access" nothing will change

Rusty Tucker: but for everyone else, the aliases that point "outside" of their access group will be dead

Rusty Tucker: You'll need to add "invisible" paths to bring them back to life

Rusty Tucker: add a path to the CD, set the privs, and make it invisible.

Rusty Tucker: ditto for the web folders

Rusty Tucker: not sure if I'd do that for the mail folders though

Bob Nunn: That will be in the UM?

Rusty Tucker: yes, its a check box in the path setup in the new UM

Bob Nunn: I cross paths on for example a homepage for PSI (secretaries org.) and the users mail box whose name is Sheila@headgap that way she can pick up mail for both with one visit.

Rusty Tucker: You might want to just go to UM and actually put one mailbox inside the other for real, rather than via alias

Bob Nunn: Glad there is still a workaround. Liked that feature.

Michael Davidson: Hey Rusty, I thought of something but I might be wrong

Michael Davidson: Concerning viewing preview PICTs in IE

Michael Davidson: Doesn't QuickTime plug in allow for PICT viewing

Daniel O'Leary: Boo All!!!

Rusty Tucker: boo!

Daniel O'Leary: Took the day off to clean up so the kids can hose it tonight...

Rusty Tucker: It probably does Michael

Rusty Tucker: :)

Daniel O'Leary: It does ...

Daniel O'Leary: And a whole lot of other things too.

Rusty Tucker: I always keep my car in the garage on this night

Rusty Tucker: I had a truck get egged about 10 years ago,

Daniel O'Leary: QT PI does midi, and some sound formats. Looks like the new one does wav..

Rusty Tucker: I think it will do WAV on Mac now too, that should be handy

Bob Nunn: If you are spending the night at someone's house on Halloween is it improper to get up and use their own paper to TP the yard if everyone is already asleep?

Michael Davidson: And isn't there a QT plug-in for IE

Michael Davidson: And isn't there a QT plug-in for IE?

Rusty Tucker: I think that would be perfect!

Rusty Tucker: But

Daniel O'Leary: Rusty. I have confirmed WAV. if you have QTC loaded you can do also do netphone and whiteboarding.

Rusty Tucker: since you're spending the nite, make sure that there is some leftover!

Daniel O'Leary: Yea... hehe (on the TP)

Daniel O'Leary: I will have a bunch of kids over tonight for a party.

Bob Nunn: Hadn't considered. Going to a party in the country. Will keep that in mind.

Rusty Tucker: :)

Bob Nunn: ;)

Rusty Tucker: time to go

Daniel O'Leary: I have a 120 pound pumpkin I want to hurl.

Daniel O'Leary: Any ideas?

Rusty Tucker: I'll upload the log and the new servers in a bit

Michael Davidson: I think I'm back??

Daniel O'Leary: That is its cleaned out (carved) weight.

Rusty Tucker: yow!

Bob Nunn: Yep, See you next week. Roast up them seeds when you get done. Drop it off the overpass on a convertible.

Daniel O'Leary: Think I will put a picture of it on my page.

Daniel O'Leary: It dwarfs the wagon I put it in.

Michael Davidson: And isn't there a QT plug-in for IE???Did you get the rest of my messages??

Daniel O'Leary: or ON.

Bob Nunn: We might get to see a TF sysop on CNN if you time it just right.

Daniel O'Leary: I think so MD.

Daniel O'Leary: heheh

Daniel O'Leary: I do not really know since I lock out access using IE.

Rusty Tucker: Yes, there's a QT plug for IE, it runs NS plugs

Daniel O'Leary: I have a conditional that looks at the browser ID string and gives them the skulls if they are using IE, instead of the page.

Michael Davidson: Mine is slooooooooooooooooooooow so bear with me a sec

Rusty Tucker: Gotta go, see you next Tuesday!

Daniel O'Leary: And increments a count to hack them off...

Bob Nunn: Doesn't call to the QT plug in the same though.

Daniel O'Leary: Take care Rusty!

Michael Davidson: Doesn't QT allow for viewing PICTS (previews)

Bob Nunn: Gotta go to. See ya next week.

Daniel O'Leary: Yes it does MD.

Michael Davidson: Then Jim leary should use TF pict preview and make sure his clients have the QT plug in if they use IE

Michael Davidson: I like the skulls if using IE Daniel!!:)

Daniel O'Leary: Hehe... I do too, MD.

Daniel O'Leary: Did not know that it worked until a buddy of mine called me at work.

Michael Davidson: Ok, is rusty putting up some new servers tonight or something?

Daniel O'Leary: I nearly fell out of my chair laughing.

Michael Davidson: Cool...you should make that public info (on how to do it)

Daniel O'Leary: I think RT is loading some new servers tonight, but I came in on the tail end of the talk so I do not know what they feature.

mikael fredriksson: Yes a new beta with support for OT 1.3 IP Multihoming

Daniel O'Leary: Jammin!

Michael Davidson: Cool. Thanks mikael. Unfortunately, I'm not yet in position to use it.

mikael fredriksson: rusty tucker: Mail Server: fixes a bug handling deformed "To" headers

rusty tucker: Web Server: supports IP Multihoming!

Michael Davidson: Gotta go guys...I might be asking for info on the IE thing later Daniel...It's such a great idea!!

mikael fredriksson: bye

Michael Davidson: I might need that MS

Daniel O'Leary: See you MD, anytime.

Michael Davidson: bye now
