---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TeleFinder Chat from Tuesday, December 30, 1998 11 AM PST. In attendance: From Spider Island: Rusty Tucker Sysops: Donald McHose, Bob Nunn, Jim Smith, Jim Leary, Mikael Fredriksson ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rusty Tucker: hola! Mikael Fredriksson: hi! Donald McHose: Any good rumors? The net is fairly slack today. Rusty Tucker:indeed -- very very slow here. don't expect much action until next week Rusty Tucker: lots of folks taking the week off Rusty Tucker: anyone here running a multiport serial card? Bob Nunn: I guess I am. Have a hurdler. Donald McHose: Hurdler also, Donald McHose: 2 port Rusty Tucker: great- I had a report that 5.7.2 b2 didn't work quite right with them? Rusty Tucker: check that server 5.7.2 Rusty Tucker: If one of you could verify that you can change ports and get calls and make calls ( with TF user ) that would be helpful Bob Nunn: Haven't put it on yet. Don't like to change when I am going out of town. Can have it up later. Rusty Tucker: Doug Canton was having a problem Rusty Tucker: thx Donald McHose: easy enough to check out. I'll give it a shot tonight. Rusty Tucker: thx! Donald McHose: What have you got cooking for the future ( near ). Rusty Tucker: I'm also looking for GIFs that are numbers in the "Odometer" style for my Java applet. Donald McHose: Let me make a note on that ;-) Rusty Tucker: The future holds a better email interface for TF User Rusty Tucker: in the long term, I'm keeping my eye on "Gecko". If that develops according to plan, it would make a nice HTML control for TF. Rusty Tucker: Gecko is the open source HTML rendering engine for Mozilla. Donald McHose: I was wondering if you were keeping an eye on that dev. Donald McHose: I was wondering what impact the AOL deal would have on its future. Rusty Tucker: I've got a TeleFinder clock ( also Java ) at :http://www.spiderisland.com/Java/cl/clock.html Rusty Tucker: Not sure about the AOL impact, hopefully positive Donald McHose: Hmmm..can't cut -n-paste with this win95 version of user from the chat window ;-( Mikael Fredriksson: RT I uploaded all "digits" I had on my system they are in the upload folder Rusty Tucker: thx! Mikael Fredriksson: I think that the one in digitdir.old are the kind you wanted Donald McHose: Got a lady ( customer in distress )gots to run! Rusty Tucker: yep those are it! Rusty Tucker: from CountWWWebula? Mikael Fredriksson: Yes Rusty Tucker: are any of them free ones, or all came from CountWWWebula? Bob Nunn: Got a security violation when I accessed your http://www.spiderisland.com/Java/cl/clock.html - Netscape 3.04 Rusty Tucker: Java security violation? Rusty Tucker: or Netscape crash? Mikael Fredriksson: RT I dint remember haven't been using them since Jan. 96 Bob Nunn: Yep let me reload to see more details. Didn't crash just didn't finish. Rusty Tucker: I didn't try 3.04, just 4.0 Rusty Tucker: Me either MF -- too many crashes with the counter cgi Bob Nunn: Method Verification Error. Can't start applet Mikael Fredriksson: :) Rusty Tucker: Java has a similar problem on the Mac, it doesn't work or crashes too many times. Rusty Tucker: You probably need NS 4 Bob for a newer version of Java Rusty Tucker: Its either 1.1 or 1.2 Rusty Tucker: see :) Bob Nunn: Perhaps I can pull it in. I don't like 4 it changes the graphics display to a lower quality. Rusty Tucker: It also works with the newest MS Explorer Rusty Tucker: -- check that, I think Explore will sometimes crash on this applet. Good thing that Java is "safe" Rusty Tucker: works great from Windows though! Fast and stable Bob Nunn: It says Java 301 in the /netscape prefs/Java/libraryÄ Rusty Tucker: -really- wish apple would get their VM act together Bob Nunn: I can give you the readout from the console area if you are interested. Rusty Tucker: sure Bob Nunn: VERIFIER ERROR Clock2.init()V: Cannot find class Java/text/DateFormat # Applet exception: class Clock2 got a security violation: method verification error java.lang.VerifyError: Clock2 at netscape.applet.AppletClassLoader.loadClass1(AppletClassLoader.java:263) * at netscape.applet.AppletClassLoader.loadClass(AppletClassLoader.java:233) at netscape.applet.AppletClassLoader.loadClass(AppletClassLoader.java:214) at netscape.applet.EmbeddedAppletFrame.run(EmbeddedAppletFrame.java:300) at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:296) Mikael Fredriksson: RT you can get more digits from http://saaz.lanl.gov/Gifs/Gifs_Download.html Rusty Tucker: sounds like NS 3 runs Java 1.0x not 1.1 Rusty Tucker: looks like I should change my Counter apple to use 1.gif instead of one.gif etc. Rusty Tucker: never mind! already is doing that! Rusty Tucker: makes it easy to use the WWWebula counter sets. Just drag them into the numbers folder. Rusty Tucker: ok -- WWWebula spells them out, mine use the number Jim Smith: Rusty, can I ask you a programming ? ? Rusty Tucker: u bet Jim Smith: I am having a problem crashing, out in space someplace, using CW debugger to test with. It may go thru this same code several times before it will crash, it's a dialog routine. However it does not always point to the same line of code, as return point. Do you have some recommendations on some way to trap this thing? Rusty Tucker: Are there controls on the dialog? Jim Smith: Yes Rusty Tucker: It is a Mac Dialog, not a PowerPlant dialog? Jim Smith: and 3 popup, Mac dialog, not using PowerPlant Rusty Tucker: Could be the popup menu crashing. Or, do you have any "User Items" in the dialog? Rusty Tucker: maybe one of them does not reset the port. Jim Smith: some Pict - arrows Rusty Tucker: what is the System error, with Macsbugs only> Jim Smith: memory access Rusty Tucker: 1, 2, or 25? Jim Smith: 2 Rusty Tucker: If the CW debugger is not helping, I'd check the stack crawl in Macsbugs Rusty Tucker: also trouble shoot by taking your user item and popups out. Jim Smith: thx Rusty Tucker: You user item call back should save and restore the graf port. Sounds like it is, otherwise I'd expect a a system error 25 Rusty Tucker: which popups do you use? Jim Smith: It for font/size and some others stuff Rusty Tucker: they are the system cdefs? Rusty Tucker: I ran into problems with the Popups when I went to CWPro 2. but that was a powerplant problem. Jim Smith: No just menu resources Jim Smith: The original code from Think C work without problem, must be something in CW Jim Leary: Not a hot day in the chat room I guess...Happy New Year Jim Smith: Happy New Year ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- December 31, 1998 -- ©Copyright 1998, Spider Island Software
