---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Text of TeleFinder Chat from Friday, June 12, 1998 11 AM PDT. In attendance: From SpiderIsland: Rusty Tucker Sysops: Bob Nunn, Michael Davidson, Jim Smith, Ken Sutherland, RobinM, Daniel O'Leary ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael Davidson: hi Rusty Michael Davidson: Hi Bob Michael Davidson: Hey, RT, got a quick ? :) Rusty Tucker: hi Bob, I need to leave soon. Rusty Tucker: can you keepa log today? Michael Davidson: how can I move GateSpool Folder to a different Drive than MS Bob Nunn: Hey, sorry I'm late no problem yes will keep the log. Rusty Tucker: GA MD Michael Davidson: Sorry, GateWay Spool Rusty Tucker: its backup day at SI, so I'm on my Wintel today Rusty Tucker: no bot! :) Michael Davidson: oooooo... Michael Davidson: Will MS resolve the alias to GateWay Spool Bob Nunn: I have had a few people tell me they liked the New Windoze Client. Most haven't really thrashed it yet. Rusty Tucker: ?, you'd have to try, I don't think so tho. Rusty Tucker: I'm nailing a coupla bugs in 400b1 now, look for b2 soon Rusty Tucker: There's a problem w/ file attachments in b1 Michael Davidson: Ok, then how bout going into MS. config and changing the short path (it assumes Mail Server folder) to a different disk/folder path Rusty Tucker: that will work Rusty Tucker: you can probably put a full path in if you want Michael Davidson: Mail Server won't automatically prefix HostHD: TF Server: Mail Server: to the path to Gateway Spool folder? Michael Davidson: See, I want all stuff coming into my machine to go to non-boot HD Rusty Tucker: the default is a partial path I think like :Gateway Spool Michael Davidson: I already have mail & conferences & files that way Rusty Tucker: then make a full path to the folder you want the Gateway folders in Rusty Tucker: do you know what the res id is? Michael Davidson: yes, so do you think or do you know that a full path to a different HD will work in MS. config Michael Davidson: no on the res id Rusty Tucker: I think that it will, STR# 29001, 7 Rusty Tucker: careful with those strings! Michael Davidson: Thanks...how bout having the option to set the path to Gateway Spool gateway folders Michael Davidson: Instead of forcing it to be on same HD as MS host Rusty Tucker: just trying to keep it simple as possible I guess Michael Davidson: should I use ResEdit or BBEdit, which is best...hoping BB, since I change beta's too often Michael Davidson: I am even moving my SpiderIsland mail folder (internal gateway) to the GateWay folder Rusty Tucker: Why not just move Mail Server? Michael Davidson: I want the hosts separate from the Data Michael Davidson: only one that can write to my servers boot drive is me and all the host on the boot drive Ken Sutherland: Hiya Michael Davidson: and all the hosts are on the boot drive ((clarification) Michael Davidson: Anyway, do you KNOW if putting full path in Ms.config will work Michael Davidson: Hi Ken.. Rusty Tucker: u need 2 try MD Michael Davidson: ok Rusty Tucker: I gotta go now -- will see you all next week, or later today. Ken Sutherland: c-ya Rusty Tucker Bob Nunn: See ya next time. Michael Davidson: Hey Bob, can you tell me what you have for Local domains in your MS Server Identity setup Bob Nunn: headgap.com, bbs.headgap.com, www.headgap.com, probably something for the tfnet.org as well. Michael Davidson: Ken, what's happenin? Bob Nunn: Not sure that was the question. Don't have my server handy to look at the setup. Ken Sutherland: I'm hiding from everyone 8-) Michael Davidson: that's what I wanted Ken Sutherland: new mail plugin on Monday Bob Nunn: They been poking at ya in the conferences some. Seems to me you usually show up here though. Ken Sutherland: 1.0b3 Ken Sutherland: that's what I thought Bob Nunn: Rumor has it Jon found a memory leak and its fixed now? Ken Sutherland: several Ken Sutherland: only showed with 5.7 Bob Nunn: Well I ain't complaining, I don't have too many problems. The OT bug bites me more than anything else. Ken Sutherland: maybe only was with 5.7 Ken Sutherland: Welcome to the Chat Room chat RobinM! RobinM: Hi Bob Nunn: Hey RobinM: sorry I'm late, slept in RobinM: is this the sysop meeting? Bob Nunn: Yes RobinM: groovy Michael Davidson: Bob, what is the typical email address of one of your bbs users? address of bbs_user_name@headgap.com OR bbs_user_name@bbs.headgap.com Bob Nunn: usually name@headgap.com for my system. The co. system is first.last@wangs.com RobinM: Mine are username@thebarn.ml.org Michael Davidson: thanks Bob Nunn: Robin, Rusty had to duck out early so we are just shooting the breeze. Feel free to jump in our ask anything. RobinM: Cool, thanks, I have a few questions Michael Davidson: brb RobinM: First: I finally got everything running (Email, Web hosting, basic BBS innards) is there anything else I should attach to it? any Plugins or companion programs? Ken Sutherland: hey Bob, my ntu is now fitted, all I'm waiting for is my Cisco 2500 Michael Davidson: is it on the way Ken? Bob Nunn: I would add the HDS Mail program from highlander. I also run a web chat program. Ken Sutherland: yup Ken Sutherland: also oat RobinM: Hmm, where can I find those, and are they explained well in their documentation? Ken Sutherland: c-ya Jim Smith Michael Davidson: I THINK Ken might be able to help you Robin Michael Davidson: :) Bob Nunn: Online Assistant for Telefinder (OAT) gives you some extended features. I particularly like the Postmaster feature but there are many more. Michael Davidson: I especially liked the list serve to conference feature Michael Davidson: of OAT Bob Nunn: Hit my headgap.com site I have a lot of docs online but you may have to look around a bit to find it. I also use the listserve to conf. RobinM: yeah, I've been using it(Telefinder) for a while, but just got serious with it last weekend Ken Sutherland: Hi Robin, my company offer 2 extra programs, as mentioned. online assistant and hdsweb Bob Nunn: If you want Newsgroups on your system you will need Lollipop. RobinM: cool, and if you guys want, you can visit my BBS: thebarn.ml.org RobinM: it has a web page too, but I'm working on it, my graphics man is busy with school Ken Sutherland: will do next week Michael Davidson: That's what I need, a graphics man! Bob Nunn: Will stop by soon. Let me know if you see anything on my site you want the html code for and I ll send it to u. RobinM: hehe, mine is the best, he is the man at Photoshop, I wish I had a URL of his work laying around Michael Davidson: Bob's site is definitely worth taking a look at Robin RobinM: I'm going now Michael Davidson: And, you need to visit Ken's site too, Highlanders Bob Nunn: When do you think on B3 Ken? This weekend? Ken Sutherland: nope. its crap at the moment Michael Davidson: to get OAT & hdsweb Ken Sutherland: ? RobinM: wow hey cool, that's what I was thinking of a while back about the front page (your navigation BBS desktop) Ken Sutherland: get them from SpiderIsland, its faster Bob Nunn: RT does have the most bandwidth, but mine isn't too bad either. Ken Sutherland: Welcome to the Chat Room chat Daniel O'Leary! Ken Sutherland: has anyone setup a complete generic web pages folder yet for those not good at web design? hint hint Daniel O'Leary: yo Bob Nunn: I have a Telefinder Tools area that has a bigger assortment of materials. Ken Sutherland: hey its the hard drive killer Daniel O'Leary: Ken kill that bot! Ken Sutherland: I'll be right back! Bob Nunn: I have one but I think DO's is better, even with those ugly backgrounds. Ken Sutherland: haha Daniel O'Leary: Am mixing chat with a half day off. Daniel O'Leary: Hey BN what does that mean... I love ugly BGS. Bob Nunn: Yes we all know :-) Bob Nunn: Robin you may want to stop by Daniel's site as well. I steal some of my better stuff from him. RobinM: What's the URL? RobinM: for both Highlander and Daniel's? Daniel O'Leary: BN I lost everything and am redoing all of it. RobinM: I think it was highlander Daniel O'Leary: Mine is kz.eaze.net. Daniel O'Leary: My primary HD crashed right as I was backing up onto Jaz carts. Bob Nunn: Spoke to soon I guess. Good ones to check on though. Daniel O'Leary: I may have a copy of it at my brothers place, but it will have to wait until I can get someone to check it. Daniel O'Leary: Maybe tonight. Ken Sutherland: sorry about that, I killed the bot and it crashed my Mac Bob Nunn: Sorry to hear that Dan. We know now what you will be doing with your time off. That's a pile of work. Daniel O'Leary: BN I hope you don't mind that I put folders around the chat logs. Daniel O'Leary: Navigation was getting weird in there. Bob Nunn: Nope glad you did. Would have gotten to it eventually. I did split the web page up but I need to do the same for it eventually as well. Daniel O'Leary: Robin, you should bookmark my site. RobinM: what was the URL? Michael Davidson: Guys, I'm going to go try that MS. config thing...might be back Daniel O'Leary: It is about 100 MB of good stuff when I get it back on. Ken Sutherland: any maybe you will be able to logon ! Daniel O'Leary: kz.eaze.net. RobinM: ahh, yes I did Ken Sutherland: dan, got the g3 yet Daniel O'Leary: I will call my sisterinlaw tonight to have here check the backups there. Daniel O'Leary: Not yet ken, just got prices of Mem and disks. Ken Sutherland: remember to send me the Jaz disk Daniel O'Leary: About 50% of what Apple wants for the dame thing. Daniel O'Leary: same thing. Ken Sutherland: as I have mentioned before, become a apple developer and get an extra 20% off Bob Nunn: Robin, One more to try is macnexus.org I stole my idea for the hot linked graphics from them, at least they inspired me. Daniel O'Leary: Yeah, thought about that too. RobinM: hehe, cool Daniel O'Leary: BN the next site will use mouseovers for everything... Daniel O'Leary: grin. Daniel O'Leary: and degraded pages. Bob Nunn: I do like that as well. I was thinking about the lit up menu's. Still ain't too good at Java. Daniel O'Leary: I'm getting there. Daniel O'Leary: Can do alot with SSI now. Daniel O'Leary: All my pages are modular, and I just saw a DHTM/Java layered animation.3 Daniel O'Leary: Am thinking about doing some of that too. Bob Nunn: Jon, inspired me to try some of that and with SSI it makes it easy to give fresh looks. Need some time to try more of that. Daniel O'Leary: All of my old pages did that. Each month a new ugly bg and color scheme. Daniel O'Leary: color scheme actually changed by the hour... Bob Nunn: My page header is randomly chosen for example but I only have 2 made and they are very similar. Daniel O'Leary: AND all content excluded exploder/msn... sent them to a why am I locking you out page. Bob Nunn: With a link to Netscape's latest? Daniel O'Leary: You bet... Am a Netscape partner... Daniel O'Leary: Got the T-shirt to prove it. Daniel O'Leary: grin. RobinM: hehe Ken Sutherland: dan did u get ip5 running yet Daniel O'Leary: No Ken... Archive did not unpack. Ken Sutherland: crap Daniel O'Leary: Think both were partials. Ken Sutherland: will do again in segments Daniel O'Leary: Am wondering now about SoftRaid and HFS+. Wonder if it works. Daniel O'Leary: OK. Daniel O'Leary: BN am getting a new G3. Ken Sutherland: you are a real pain dan RobinM: I don't trust any HD raid, or HFS+ Bob Nunn: DO do you have the BillKiller program on your system? Daniel O'Leary: Sorry Ken. Daniel O'Leary: Send it Bob. Ken Sutherland: me 2 Ken Sutherland: I lost my site in Jan. due to HFS+ RobinM: yeah, same happened to my play computer Daniel O'Leary: I think the File System is suspect. Ken Sutherland: goto go, catch u later Daniel O'Leary: I do not want to have multiple partitions. Wish they would fix whatever is wrong with it. Ken Sutherland: dan u home? Daniel O'Leary: Yes Ken....Robin, the system will come with dual 4 GB drives and SoftRaid. RobinM: wow, that's nice Bob Nunn: I am running it on my files drive but am running reg. HFS on my boot and system drives. I will wait a bit longer for everyone else to get the bugs identified and fixed. Daniel O'Leary: BN take it OFF the files drive. Daniel O'Leary: I would ONLY use it on the conferences/mail drive. Bob Nunn: Think so huh, I have had it up a good long while now. Daniel O'Leary: those get the best return on space. Bob Nunn: Also get fragged the worst and need most repair. I would like to recover the space though. Daniel O'Leary: Conferences and mail are the easiest to maintain/restore too. Daniel O'Leary: keep templates of the empty confs, and periodic backups of the mail area. Bob Nunn: Good idea. Hadn't thought of the empties templates. Usually redo by hand. Daniel O'Leary: I always had that. Daniel O'Leary: Don't like doing them by hand. Also do a pathmemory on the template. Daniel O'Leary: that way you can move it from drive to drive if needed. Ken Sutherland: night Bob Nunn: Good idea. I need to run too. On the phone. See you all next week unless there is something else. Daniel O'Leary: OK. What happened to RT today? Bob Nunn: He had to duck out didn't say. Asked me to keep log. Bob Nunn: said b2 on windoze version 4 would be out soon. Daniel O'Leary: Cool Deal... Will be here at my system for the afternoon if not at the pool! Daniel O'Leary: phone is 817-367-2558. Bob Nunn: Robin, I am headgap@headgap.com if I can help with anything. Bye@! RobinM: thanks, bye ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- June 12, 1998 -- ©Copyright 1998, Spider Island Software
