I certainly agree with this. Though it isn't clear if he is after a
comprehensive backup solution, or after simply protecting himself from
the mortal nature of hard drives.

In the time I've owned computers (15 years), there are two ways I've
lost data.

1) my own error by erasing files that I didn't mean to erase.
2) hard drive failure.

I think those are the most common irretrievable data losses to occur,
and I would have been saved from both if I'd had all important files
copied to a second hard drive in the machine.

It is true that that there are lots of easily imaginable circumstances
that this _wouldn't_ save me from (earthquake crushing my computer,
both hard drives being zapped by a nearby lightning strike, etc.) but
it does afford an increase in security nevertheless.
