Open System Profiler (Apple menu, About This Mac, More Info) and check the model of MacBook you have.
If it says 1,1, then it's 2GB, model 2,1 is 3GB (you can fit two 2GB sticks), if it's 3,1 or 4,1 you can fit 4GB.
