The demand is for these languages to be entirely the same on all platforms. Tcl/Tk, Perl, Java, Python, Caml, etc... totally lose their value when they are implemented differently on different platforms and require users to perform insane platform-specific "tricks" to get your program to work.
The criminality of what Microsoft did to Java was in forcing down people's throats their Windoze-only libraries. What is the point of writing a Java program if it won't work on any Java other than on Windoze??? Same goes for Unix-only and Mac-only stuff.
