Set your eMac to sleep, say in 5 minutes, then unplug ALL devices, including keyboard and mouse and any network connection. I have a USB printer interface that when plugged in prevents the computer from going to sleep. I know, that is not the problem you have, but hey, it is easy to give this a try.
