The Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California has a staff position available for Macintosh technical support. This position is responsible for end-user technical support, as well as maintenance and development of the technology infrastructure of the organization, including computer systems, phones, network, Internet connectivity, web sites, and other related technologies. The chosen candidate will be a member of a four-person team responsible for providing seven day per week support to roughly 50 users in a Mac OS X networked campus environment. Core business software includes Microsoft Office 2004 and FileMaker Pro 8. On the backend are Apple Xserve G5 servers running OS X Server 10.4 and FileMaker 8 Server, and a Windows 2000 server running accounting software.
Responsibilities
The position requires 40 hours work per week, typically scheduled as five consecutive days during normal daily business hours (9am-5pm), and availability for infrequent after-hours maintenance and on-call support in the event of after-hours emergencies. The position is responsible for providing user support and training in a friendly and timely manner, working closely with users from various departments to support the organization. Must work to ensure integrity of backups and security systems. Must be able to think creatively and have an independent sense of ownership and follow-through with daily tasks and projects. Must keep up-to-date with current, relevant technologies, news and standards.
Qualities for Consideration
· Strong technical background, experience and interest: must have experience providing IT or help desk support in a Mac business or campus/lab environment. · Apple technical certifications strongly preferred: primarily Mac OS X certifications (ACHDS, ACTC, ACSA), but also valuable are hardware certifications (ACDT, ACPT). New hires are expected to achieve the ACTC within the first three months, and the ACSA within the first year of employment. · Clear communication and willingness to relate to others, to listen and hear concerns in a patient and supportive manner; effective verbal and written communication skills. · Expert problem-solver able to accurately diagnose and repair systems. · Independent work ethic to carry projects through to completion and implement solutions without constant supervision; ability and desire to explore and learn new technologies to support Esalen and our mission and enhance our business. · Strong analytic capability and organizational skills. · Community interest and involvement necessary to work, adapt, and thrive in Esalen's unique professional and social environment. · Physical ability to walk, climb, crawl around property and lift computer equipment (50+ lbs) as necessary to perform duties.
Core Technical Skills
· Mac OS X client & server 10.4.x platforms · Mac OS X administration: Server Admin, NetBoot, NetInstall, Remote Desktop, etc. · Apple standard software: Mail, Safari, iCal, Address Book, iWork & iLife suites, etc. · Experience with Microsoft Office 2004: Entourage, Word, Excel, PowerPoint · Experience configuring and troubleshooting Internet protocols ( IP, DNS, DHCP, etc.) · Basic networking: ethernet & fiber LAN, wireless 802.11, routers, firewalls, switches, etc. · Basic hardware support, upgrades, and maintenance capabilities · Basic UNIX skills for system administration, scripting, troubleshooting, etc.
Complementary Technical Skills
· Microsoft Windows 2000/XP/Vista; Windows 2000/2003 Server (Microsoft certifications also a plus) · FileMaker 8 Pro & Server · Apache 2 Server · EMC Retrospect 6 Backup Server · AppleScript and other scripting technologies · Core web technologies including XHTML & CSS, RSS · Advanced web development: Javascript, AJAX, PHP, MySQL, XML, Filemaker/Lasso · Web and multimedia tools: Adobe Photoshop, Flash · Phone system technologies, including PBX programming, VoIP solutions, etc. · Open source technologies: familiarity with popular open source packages, including Apache, Webmin, SpamAssassin, Clam Antivirus,, etc.; ability to research, advise, install/setup, maintain, and document appropriate open source solutions
Compensation
The salary for this position is $1,500/month which is provided in addition to all meals , on-property housing if available (or housing allowance of $900/month), and a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and paid time off.
