You're right. It wasn't performance *gain* it was merely coming back to parity with the PC world. Apple rode the 68000 bus to the end of the line and Moto/IBM were unwilling to keep the line alive just for Apple. It was amazing that Apple managed to keep suppliers interested even that long with their small volume.
