Date: Wed, 1 Jul 1998 02:06:08 -0800 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: ?? - Need Help Keeping Labs Mac-based
This request is from:
Jenson Wong, <jenson@medisg.stanford.edu>
I've been lurking on the evangelist for some time now, and I have gotten great little tidbits on how to fight the good fight against the Wintel minions. I sit on a computerized curriculum steering committee at UT Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, where medical students have enjoyed an extremely low-cost all-Macintosh laboratory environment administered by At Ease for Workgroups.
The dean of the school has come upon funds to upgrade our aging 6100/60s to G3s, but there is some push on this committee to also get some Pentium II machines in the labs. (The administration at this school all use Wintel machines.) I feel that the money spent on Pentium IIs would be better spent on more G3s.
I would like some input from you all who have managed computer labs in either the Mac or the Wintel world, and also mixed lab environments. Are there software packages out there that can secure and remotely manage both Mac and Wintel machines? What are your experiences with managing mixed labs (both positive and negative)?
Currently, the entire system of ~150 macintoshes is administered by two already very busy people. It's amazing to me to see how little time it takes for them to address problems with Apple Network Administrator Toolkit and At Ease. I just think that adding PCs to the mix can only serve to sap more of our resources rather than make things easier. Am I incorrect in this feeling?
Thanks very much for all your help.
Sincerely,
Jenson Wong Medical Student II, UT Southwestern Medical School

Software Archeology is the science of unearthing ancient floppy disks and dissecting the contents. Here's a good example: have you ever found an old disk lying around and decided to check to see what was on it? Have you ever popped it into the drive of your late model Mac running the latest system software and then tried to boot an old application with a compilation date from the 80's? If you have answered yes, then you have dabbled in the very basic foundations of Software Archeology.
The URL is <http://applelinks.pair.com/editorials/archeology.shtml> __________________________ Digital Guy Sez:
An old disk (singular)? Heh. I have literally HUNDREDS of the darn things stashed in boxes, some dating back to the very first Mac I laid my hands on in '87. I even have (somewhere, don't ask to see them anytime soon! :) original disks for "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" and "Dark Castle". Oh, and a complete set of system disks for the Mac 512K I once had to run a BBS on (with a 20 Meg *serial* hard drive that plugged into the floppy port...eek!).
Why do I have all of these? Well, I never kept up with labeling the darn things, and I am apparently afflicted with a new disease of the modern age...a mortal fear of tossing a disk with valluble data on it. Never mind that it's probably a ten year old resume. :-)

Here's a question for G3 owners, do you realize that all G3 Mac's ship with a 3D accelerator included? Are you using this accelerator? Here's a FREE way for G3 owners (or people who have added a 3D accelerator to their PowerMac's) to get some use out of these 3D accelerators:
Bullseye Software is creating a new WWI era flight sim called, "Bullseye Software's Flying Circus", and it's specifically designed to take advantage of 3D accelerators, especially those already included with G3 machines. You can download a demo version of this program from my website at <http://www.nauticom.net/www/website/bullseye/>
Don't let your 3D accelerators laze around doing nothing! Download the Flying Circus Demo today and give 'em a work out! And, by the way, Flying Circus is a ton of fun.
