Subject: Tidbit - Cable Modems and the Mac

This tidbit is from:

George Wagner, <g.wagner@sylvania.sev.org>

My father, who lives in Columbus, OH, just got his Mac hooked up for
Internet access through the local cable company, Warner Cable. (VERY
FAST) When they were getting the information about his system to set up
the installation, the lady he was talking to said, "Oh, you have a Mac?
Great! The Mac are easy to set up." And he was up and running with just a
short visit from the tech guy.

Score another one for the Mac.

Anyone in the Columbus area should look into Warner's Road Runner system.
It runs about $40 a month, the same as my dad was paying for dial up
access and a second phone line.

Subject: ?? - Secure Remote Client Wanted

This request is from:

<mmurray@arlington.k12.tx.us>

Our school district is currently using Lotus Notes behind a firewall. I
am trying to find a secure remote client or secure IP Tunnel client that
would let me create a secure tunnel to the firewall so that I could get
to my Lotus account from an ISP. According to the IBM person working in
the district, he has found a client that will work with Windows 95 that
he is currently setting up, but he doesn't know of anything that would
work on Macintosh. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate hearing
them.

Subject: PR - Initio Miles UltraWide SCSI Card!

This announcement is from:

Initio Corporation, <sales@initio.com>

Initio Corporation would like to announce the availability of Miles, the
PCI-to-UltraWide SCSI Host Adapter for MacOS.

Miles, the INI-9100UW Mac PCI-UltraWide SCSI bus master host adapter
provides a high performance, reliable, and simple I/O solution for
multimedia, publishing, digital video, and graphic intensive applications
running on Power Macintosh with PCI systems. Miles supports the latest
UltraSCSI and UltraWide SCSI peripherals at up to 40 MB/sec, and takes
advantage of the 133 MB/sec burst rate of the PCI bus to provide
unmatched I/O performance. Miles adds one more I/O processing arm to
Power Macintosh with PCI, enabling users to take advantage of the new,
fast, wide, and UltraSCSI devices. While Miles host adapters are capable
of keeping pace with the most demanding applications, they offer complete
compatibility with your existing SCSI peripherals. You can combine up to
15 SCSI-1, SCSI-2, SCSI-3, or UltraSCSI peripherals for optimum
performance and value. Miles is bundled with Conley SoftRAID storage
management software at no extra charge! With SoftRAID, MacOS users can
create and maintain RAID and HFS volumes; therefore improving disk
performance and fault tolerance by combining disks into an array.

Gene Wolf, <www.wolfwebshops.com>

The good press for Apple and their new products just keeps on coming.
Gadget, an online e-zine has a very nice article concerning the Apple G3
Powerbook. The article is fair and well balanced. Here's a short excerpt:

"Try this on any Pentium notebook (and remember, this is the slowest G3
model Apple makes): I played a QuickTime movie which ran smoothly with no
breaks and, on top of this, connected to a live video site using the
built-in 10baseT ethernet (network adapter) and ran a movie in
RealPlayer. Both ran at the same time, no frames lost, no jerkiness. It
blew me away..."

Subject: ?? - Need Mac Solution for Metered Printing on NT

This request is from:

IQTech-P.Reilly, <preilly@isoquantic.com>

As I fight to keep the Macs available in our computer lab here at the Law
Library, another issue has arose. The Tech people want to meter the
amount of paper each student prints from our lab. Our IT person can find
no way to allow the Macs to print over the Windows NT network and be
metered as the Windows computer can. The Macs seem to be able to
circumvent the network security/print management software. The solutions
they have talked about are to use a vendacard hard wired directly from
the Macs to the printer, others included leaving the Macs off of the
network and having them take the PC disk to the Windows computers to
print. The final solution would be, of course, to eliminate the Macs all
together.

I thought a possible solution would be to use PC LAN software, a
independent Mac Server, or some software solution... I would appreciate
all informed answers.
