What is missing in our Mac community are personal tidbits and humanization
of the Mac luminaries, and especially the users. If Mac folks "think
different" then what makes us tick? I asked some of the movers, shakers,
and users and created a site just for you!

Think about this: who _are_ the "rest of us" who "think different?" We read
articles and books, take advice, buy products, but have no idea who is
really behind it all.

Apple has targeted some stars of the entertainment and technology industry
in their AppleMasters Program, but as we know, the Mac is the computer for
"The Rest of Us." Big, small, connected, or not -- Chris Breen, Bob
Levitus, Cal Simone, chat hosts, engineers, Moms and Dads -- they're all on
the new "People of the Mac" site.

Come visit and win an iMac t-shirt! (Details on site.)

Are you tired of the ever-shrinking Macintosh book section at your local
bookstore? Even as book superstores have sprung up in every mall, they
devote less space to carrying Macintosh books, while forcing you to climb
over stacks of Windows titles to find them!

Enter MacBookshop! MacBookshop.com is a new web bookstore that features all
your favorite Mac books, over 250 titles, most at 20% off list price. And
they are easy to find, too, with our searchable database. Or, just pull
down a menu to select books on AppleScript, ClarisWorks, Office 98,
Photoshop, Web Design, Mac Operating System, Quark Xpress, and more than 30
other categories. Whether you are a Mac programmer, web site designer,
database guru, or you simply use your Mac for word processing, we have
books for you.

MacBookshop includes short reviews of each book to help you decide. We will
be publishing actual excerpts from new books as they are published, the
first being the 7th Edition of The Macintosh Bible by Sharon Zardetto Aker,
now covering OS 8.5. Plus, in conjunction with PeachPit Press, publishers
of the Visual QuickStart series and many other Mac titles, we're running a
contest to give away a copy of new title every week, so enter our drawing
now!

Avoid the crowds! Order your Christmas gifts now through MacBookshop. All
orders are handled and shipped by Amazon, so your satisfaction is assured.

This tidbit is from:

Warren Magnus <mailto:"wmagnus@ibm.net">

Do you have a great new idea in Macintosh software development? Or a great
new way to put together some old ideas and make everyone say, "WOW"?
Wouldn't you like to talk about it with a group of people who Really
Understand what you're saying?

This is your chance. Write it up and submit it as a paper for MacHack '99!

MacHack solicits and accepts papers on a wide variety of topics related to
software development. For example, the subjects of last year's papers
ranged from cross-platform development techniques, to anonymity in internet
communications, to exception-handling strategies on the Macintosh, to
macroscopic object architectures. Each paper accepted is published in the
MacHack Conference proceedings and included on the MacHack CD. Each author
gives a 50-minute presentation on his paper during the conference.

Although there are no hard limits, a MacHack paper generally runs from 2000
to 3500 words. Anything that will interest a few hundred of the best
Macintosh programmers in the world is a possible subject. Remember that you
are writing to a "hands-on" audience -- we strongly encourage the inclusion
of supporting code samples. And remember that, although a good MacHack
paper might describe a clever and innovative way to use a product, a paper
which contains overt marketing will be flatly rejected.

If your paper is accepted for MacHack '99, you will attend the conference
free. (Well, not completely free. The conference registration fee is waived
for the authors of accepted papers, but you'll have to get to Michigan and
pay your own hotel bill.)

So why wait? This is your chance to put your ideas in front of the people
best qualified to understand them, attend the world's foremost developer
conference at no charge, revolutionize the software-development industry,
and save the world! And as a bonus -- if you're a software engineer, going
to MacHack is just about the most fun you can have in three days!

So submit your paper proposals, ideas, and outlines today to
<mailto:machack-papers@machack.com>.

More information about MacHack '99 is available on the Web from

This announcement is from:

OneApp <mailto:"global@kagi.com">

Speaking of Mac shareware, Address Book 1.4 is the latest version of OneApp
Software's telephone and address program for Macintosh, Power Macintosh and
iMac that allows you to quickly and easily manage addresses, phone numbers,
URLs and Email addresses. All this information, previously scattered on
notes, notepads, diaries, phone books and also in various Email programs,
Internet browsers and databases, is now stored in a single place. In this
version, in addition to the phone number dictation feature, you can now
also get the program to generate touchtone sounds to 'dial' phone and fax
numbers through the computer's speaker and Claris Organizer has been added
to the list of the programs from which you can import addresses.

You can download the program from the OneApp Address Book Page:

This tidbit is from:

peter <mailto:"peter@hilts.net">

The local NBC affiliate in Minneapolis ran a story tonight with Brian
Billick, offensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings. The focus was on
the team's use of digital video to capture and analyze play situations in
real time. The powerbook 3400 on Billick's desk appeared to be running a
quicktime movie embedded in a powerpoint slide. The left third of the
screen included key points about a particular formation or game situation,
with the remainder of the screen containing the video. Since the Vikings
run about 1,000 different plays, their use of computers and digitized video
is critical to staying on top of players and personnel. As Billick said,
after the players, [the computerized video system] is the most important
factor in our success. Players are critical, but the Vikings did just score
over 45 points for the second week in a row, without their starting
quarterback, running back, or either starting wide receiver. Maybe at long
last it's time for the Vikings to "Superbowl Different"

Microsoft is hyping yet another technological breakthrough - ClearType - an
image and type enhancement technology, billed to make antialiasing seem
like what the dinosaurs left behind.

PCMagazine has a report on this at:

<http://www.zdnet.com/pcmag/news/trends/t981208a.html>

Lovers of all things Graphic, Mac and Apple will find this a must-read.

A titilating excerpt... " Although Microsoft characterizes the technology
as a breakthrough, ClearType is based on similar technology that Apple
patented 22 years ago when Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak developed a
high-resolution display for the Apple II."

Are we surprised? Read on. It's appreciative of the technology, but is
sceptical about Microsoft's claims to having made a breakthrough.

Subject: A 2-Bit Note About 7-bit and 8-bit Problems

This tidbit is from:

The Digital Guy <mailto:evangelist@apple.com>

Okay, I couldn't resist the flippant title...but I have to admit I feel
good about tracing down a bizarre, difficult to pinpoint problem a lot of
you have experienced with digests and messages showing up encoded in weird
ways...sometimes unreadable.

The problem occurs because of a "feature" in certain server software made
by a certain company. When it detects an an 8-bit character (the copyright
or trademark symbols are 8-bit characters) it would force the entire
document to be encoded in 8-bit ASCII. The problem with this is that the
internet, at least as far as e-mail is concerned is a very 7-bit place.
7-bit ASCII, in English terms, is just the upper and lower case alphabet,
numbers, and the basic set of punctuation.

As a rule I filtered everything higher than 7-bit until about three months
ago, when I unwittingly switched to a newer version of an AppleScript. Even
then, missing the occasional 8-bit character would only result in an odd,
unknown character box showing up in e-mail under normal circumstances.
We're talking about missing a single TM symbol after a product name.

The bottom line: I now filter for ANYTHING that isn't 7-bit and zap it. If
anyone still sees this problem after today, they should send me a note ASAP.

Thanks!

CNET Download.com launches an Exclusive for DragStrip 3.6, the launcher

DragStrip 3.6 from Poppybank Software is still the same popular taskbar
that lets you arrange and access your applications and documents via
convenient strips that are somewhat similar in appearance to the Mac's
standard Launcher. And yes, it still supports DragStrip Additions,
including the 15 plug-in modules that come with the download to help you
with a variety of tasks: from checking the calendar and routing files to
finding out what phase the moon is in and making a decision based on a
Magic 8-Ball reading. But new in version 3.6 is savvy support of the Mac OS
8.5's Navigation and Icon services, a general preformance tune-up, and the
introduction of a new Strip Style to go with the iMac's Bondi Blue color

your apps ready at the drop of a hat, try DragStrip 3.6.
