Glad to hear that you where able to recover. I am always a bit apprehensive to install materials to other folks machines but had good luck on numerous machines installing 8.6 since it is a relatively minor update from 8.5.
I always run Norton until I get a clean bill of health before doing anything else. Call it superstition if you will. The one thing that I did not do to your system that I would have given more time was to make sure that you also had the latest update to the driver to your other drive as well. Given that it was a program that I don't use I wouldn't have been able to and would have had to reformat and recreate from a backup on the materials. Rebuilding after a Norton clean bill of health I think is a bit safer in case there are drive errors.
The more complex the OS becomes the more likely I think we are to see odd things. While everyone agrees the OS is improving, it certainly is becoming more complex.
By the way, I was able to resurrect that "dead" Quantum 80 of yours. I will bring it to the next meeting and you can put it back in the old box you had.
