During a keynote address at the Seybold San Francisco/Publishing '98 conference, Steve Jobs previewed key features of Mac OS 8.5, a major upgrade to the Macintosh operating system. This upgrade, to be released in October, will include significant advances, including the following:
The Sherlock search system.
A 2:1 improvement in file-copy performance over Mac OS 8.1.
The dramatically improved ColorSync extension, which will add new algorithms from Agfa and Imation and will be made available to Windows users.
A version of AppleScript that is PowerPC native, and is expected to be as much as five times faster. Almost everything in the operating system is scriptable, and scripts can be attached to folders.
Major software developers including Adobe Systems, Macromedia, and Quark also pledged support for Mac OS X, the next-generation evolution of the Mac OS, expected to be available in fall of 1999. ColorSync 2.5.1 is the latest version of Apple's color-management architecture for the Mac OS. Apple Remote Access (ARA) 3.0.1 is an update for PowerBook G3 series computers.
