For almost two years now I have noted that TF/User cannot reliably connect to our BBS if:

(1) it is in the foreground
(2) there are things blinking in menu bar, like GlobalFax status display or Now Up To Date "QuickDay" reminders
(3) essentially the whole menu bar is full, all the way across, including the menus in the TF User application

If I put the Finder in the foreground, which allows more space in the menu bar on my 15" monitor, TF User connects fine in the background.

It just cannot connect while there is no perceived room for it to change or adjust its menu bar real estate.

So the work around is to launch TF/User, tell it to connect to the BBS, and then immediately put the Finder in the foreground until TF/User connects successfully.
