On our SpiderNet BBS I have since 1990 followed your good example.
In fact I still use it, even if the default "Quoted" feature of TF user is in black. Simply with a QuicKey, which also puts quotation marks (>>> and <<<) only at the beginning and the end of a quote, thus avoiding > problems wih wrapping: getting the ">" marks all over the place instead of at the beinning of a sentence.

My system is a work-around and it would be much nicer if Rusty could implement it in TF/User, but it works fine. Even if the blue color gets lost in Internet mail, the qoute is clearly distinct from the main text.
