In system 8.1, in the machines that I have tried, if you turn **on** the system wide platinum appearance option, the problem (of a type 3 error when the preferences dialog box opens) goes away and tfuser appears to operate normally.

If you uncheck (turn off) platinum appearance in the appearance control panel (and reboot of course) and then open telefinder and attempt to open the preferences window, the program crashes reporting a type three error (and other prgrams do the same such as find file).

(PS--thanks for looking at my macsbug log and finding out it was the appearance manager)

So I guess we should keep platinum turned on...anyone should be able to easily check this to see if it is reproducible simply by turning platinum off and seeing if the same thing hhappens on your machine.

I have heard, however, that many people turn platinum off because it allegedly leads to more frequent crashes when it is on--whether this is true or not, does this knowledge make the problem correctable?
