Already done--and with several permutations--using 5.6.1 and 5.7.1 (i.e. using the old settings file with each one and also letting each one generate its own brand new settings file). This doesn't seem to change things, but here is what does:

In windows, you can choose to have the Finder (or whatever they call it) display your files without extensions if the extensions are "registered" (meaning that windows associates them with a certain file type). When you do, "beta.txt" shows up simply as "beta". I have not yetr figured out why people wopuld consider it a "feature" to view the incomplete names of a file, but apparently this is what people do and it is the default.

When this is selected, the files don't upload properly--in fact, they upload as zero bytes, without the proper extension. When it is deselected, i.e., when the files are displayed with the .txt extension, the files are mapped normally and open in the BBS as they should.

Several caveats--first, prior to the release of 5.7, the extensionless files behaved normally,i.e., they appeared with .txt extensions and could be viewed from the bbs client

second, after I installed 5.7 (when I brought this topic up 2 weeks ago) the extensionless files uploaded normally on the TF BBS but abnormally on mine--they

third--tonite the extensionless files behave abnormally on both my server and SI, but in a different way than before--they upload but take up 0 bytes on the hard drive (getting an error message in the client transfer box)

Fourth, the files behave as expected (as I noted above) only when windows is set

Fifth, the files behave normally when I use client 3.1--in this case, I get a different file dialog box which automatically appends the extensions to the files.

Finally, there was a time--during the beta versions of 5.7, when both clients worked as expected

Here is what I tried to change

First-I tried deleting the pc .txt entry from PC exchange (the only entry there) on the server machine--this had no effect--same behavior both on and off

Second--as noted above, I tried regenerating the preference file--I THOUGHT i put the old preferences file back at the end of all my tests.

Third--here is the problem--both servers, as though by magic, are now acting in the same way--both of my servers, and they are all acting like rusty's.,.OK..fine, you say, then it must be something weird about my client machine--but about **all** the client machines in my building? And rusty's too, since you (rusty) saw the same thing?
